EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: July 4, 2026 – How to Test the Spirit Behind a Dream
Dreams are one of the ways God may communicate with people, but not every dream comes from God. The Bible shows that God spoke through dreams to people such as Joseph, Daniel, Jacob, and Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus.
At the same time, the Scriptures also warn us that deception exists and that believers must exercise spiritual discernment. Some dreams come from our thoughts and emotions, while others may be influenced by forces of darkness.
One of the greatest mistakes believers make is accepting every dream as a message from God without testing its source. This has led many people into fear, confusion, wrong decisions, broken relationships, and disappointment.
God does not want His children to be spiritually gullible. He wants us to grow in discernment so that we can distinguish between His voice, our own thoughts, and the enemy’s work.
Therefore, every dream should be prayerfully examined before finally conclusions are drawn or actions are taken. The Holy Spirit never contradicts the written Word of God.
The Bible commands us to “try the spirit.” That is, try every dream that we have. This means we should not accept every dream that appears good simply because it gives us peace. The fact that the dream isn’t threatening does not automatically mean God is speaking or the source is from God.
Every dream from God must be rooted with the word of God. How does God’s word interpret the source of the revelation to you. The truth is that, some dreams are simply the result of what occupied your mind before you slept. Others may be as a result of stress, anxiety, fear, excitement, or personal desires.
The book of Ecclesiastes tells us that dreams can come through the multitude of business. This clearly reminds us that not every dream carries a prophetic message. There are some that may arise as a result of our daily life activities.
On the other hand, there are dreams that clearly carry divine warnings, instructions, encouragement, or revelations. These dreams usually leave a lasting impression upon our mind and often agree with God’s Word. The first test of every dream is the Bible.
The Bible says the word of God is powerful. God will never reveal a dream what contradicts His written Word. For example, if a dream encourages sin, revenge, hatred, immorality, pride, or disobedience to God, you can confidently reject it because God never contradicts Himself.
If a dream involves attacks, threat, restlessness, sadness, the source may be coming from satanic. But God show it to you so that you can cancel it through prayers. It is what you know about you pray about. Another way to test a dream is by examining the fruit it produces.
Ask yourself, “What effect did this dream have on my spirit?” A dream from God may bring conviction, correction, instruction, warning, encouragement, or peace, even when it reveals difficult things. Another way to test a dream is by examining the fruit the dream produces in your life.
A dream from God may bring conviction, correction, instruction, peace or even a warning, but it ultimately leads you closer to Him. Such dreams produces faith, repentance, wisdom, and a desire to obey God. A dream inspired by fear often leaves a person confused, hopeless, condemned, or spiritually disturbed without drawing them closer to God.
If a dream causes you to abandon your trust in God or pushes you into panic instead of prayer, be careful. The Holy Spirit convicts, but He does not torment His children. Satan’s objective is to steal your peace, while God’s purpose is to strengthen your faith.
Likewise, do not become sad because of a bad dream you had. Instead, commit everything to God in prayer. If the dream is a warning from Him, He will show you what to do. But if it is an attack from the enemy, God will give you victory over the devil through prayer.
If it is simply a dream from your own mind, it will lose its significance immediately. The devil sometimes sends deceptive dreams to bring confusion. He may even show you things that never happen simply to fill your heart with fear. This is why you should never allow one dream to control your life, emotions or decisions in life.
Fear is not the voice of God. God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. God is not interested in making us dream-chasers; but He is interested in making us Christ-followers. Dreams are valuable, but they are not the foundation of our faith.
Jesus Christ is the foundation. The written Word of God is the standard by which every dream, prophecy, vision, and spiritual experience must be judged. As believers, we should thank God when He speaks to us through dreams, but we should never become obsessed with dream attacks.
Some Christians become discouraged whenever they do not dream, while others believe that every dream must contain a hidden message. This can lead to unnecessary anxiety. Remember that God speaks in many ways especially through His Word, the Holy Spirit, godly counsel, circumstances, and at times through dreams.
The safest place to be is in your close fellowship with God. A believer who walks daily with the Lord will not easily be deceived of bad dream because the Holy Spirit will provide wisdom, direction, discernment, and peace. Whether God speaks to you through a dream or through His Word, His purpose is always to draw you closer to Himself and help you fulfill His will.
Therefore, do not believe every dream, but do not ignore every dream either. Bring every dream before God, compare it with Scripture, seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and wait patiently for His confirmation. When you do this, you will avoid deception, confusion, fear, and grow in spiritual maturity, and walk confidently in God’s perfect will.
One mistake many believers are making is assuming that every dream requires immediate action. Sometimes God wants you to pray before you act. At other times, He wants you to wait until He gives further direction. Abraham did not receive all of God’s instructions in one day.
Likewise, Joseph did not understand all his dreams immediately. Daniel sought God before receiving the interpretation of his dreams and visions. Patience is part of direction and spiritual discernment. A bad dream is not always a prophecy that something terrible must happen.
Many warning dreams are invitations to pray so that evil plans and operations can be prevented. Throughout the Bible, God revealed danger to His children before it occurred physically because He wanted His people to seek Him in His secret place.
The purpose of divine revelation is redemption, not destruction or fear. There are dreams that make people believe they are greater than everyone else. They begin to see themselves as spiritually superior over the person and allow pride to govern their mind.
A dream that feeds pride should be examined carefully because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Test every dream by its consistency with God’s character. God is holy, truthful, loving, just, and merciful. If a dream portrays God in a way that contradicts His nature as revealed in Scripture, be careful.
The enemy can imitate good character but he cannot imitate the holy character of God. Another way to test a dream is through prayer. Whether morning or night prayer. Never rush to interpret a dream by your own understanding. Take it back to God in prayer.
Ask Him, “Lord, what are You saying to me through these dreams?” There are dreams that are scaring but are only calling you to pray. But that doesn’t mean they will come to pass.
There are others that appear exciting but are actually warning you against pride, hate, wickedness, anger, bitterness, cheating, envy, or self-confidence. Only the Holy Spirit can reveal the true meaning. Once you can get the true meaning of the dream, you know how to channel your prayers.
When you receive a disturbing dream, you not be panic but prayer. When you are panic, you will get more attack in the dream, and you won’t able to know what kind of prayers God wants you to pray. The mistake many people are making is their quick judgement over the source of a dream.
We believe since the dream is an attack, its actually from the devil. But we must be careful not to attribute every bad dream to the devil. When Joseph had a dream about the stars bowing down to him, he did not conclude that the source of the dream is bad.
A believer who walks closely with the Lord will grow in discernment and will be able to distinguish between the voice of God, the imagination of the heart, and every deceptive influence of the enemy. The Bible also teaches us to avoid being controlled by signs and dream experiences.
Many people constantly seek dreams because they believe God cannot speak to them in any other way. Yet God primarily speaks through to us His Word. Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
If your Bible remains closed while you are still constantly searching for dream interpretations, you will get more confused. Its important every dream with the word of God to know its orginal source. There are times when God gives us a dream simply to prepare us for what is ahead.
He may not reveal every detail, but He will definitely gives enough light for you to remain watchful. Before the famine came upon Egypt, God revealed it to Pharaoh long before that event through a dream (Genesis 41:25-32). The dream does not appear to create fear but to prepare the nation.
In the same way, if God shows you something concerning your future, do not be worried. Ask Him how He wants you to respond. Sometimes God gives dreams that require prayer before they come to pass. King Hezekiah received a prophecy that he would die, but he turned to God in prayer, and the Lord added fifteen years to his life (Isaiah 38:1-5).
Although this was not through a dream, it teaches us an important principle here: some warnings are invitations to pray, and God, in His mercy, may change the outcome. Therefore, if a dream reveals danger, your first response should be prayer, not fear.
One of the greatest mistakes believers make is giving more authority to bad dreams than to the Word of God. Your Bible should always have the final say. If a dream tells you something that contradicts the clear teaching of Scripture, reject it immediately.
God will never use a dream to approve what He has already condemned in His Word. He cannot tell you to hate your neighbour when He commands you to love your enemies (Matthew 5:44). He cannot encourage dishonesty when His Word commands integrity (Proverbs 11:1).
The devil often mixes truth with deception. This has been his strategy from the beginning. In the Garden of Eden, he quoted God’s words but twisted their meaning to deceive Eve (Genesis 3:1-5). In the wilderness, Satan even quoted Scripture while tempting Jesus (Matthew 4:5-7).
This teaches us that every dream must always be tested carefully. The enemy may use partial truth to lead people into complete error. You should also learn to wait for confirmation. God is not the author of confusion. If a dream concerns an important matter, He is able to confirm it in His own way.
Gideon sought confirmation from God before delievry Isreal from the Midianites (Judges 6:36-40). While we should not constantly demand signs from God, we should also avoid acting hastily on unclear revelations. Be careful about sharing every dream with everyone.
Joseph shared his dreams with his brothers at the wrong time, and it increased their jealousy against him (Genesis 37:5-11). There are revelations that should remain between you and God until He gives you permission to speak. Not every dream is for public discussion or consumption.
Some are for personal instruction, while others are for private intercession. The condition of your heart also affects your ability to discern. Jesus said, “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). A heart filled with bitterness, pride, unforgiveness, or secret sin may struggle to recognize God’s voice clearly.
Spiritual discernment grows in an atmosphere of holiness, humility, and obedience. It is also important to recognize that God is not obligated to speak to us through dreams every night.
There will be seasons when He speaks through His Word, through the preaching of the Gospel, through circumstances, through the inward witness of the Holy Spirit, or through wise counsel. Never think that God is silent simply because you have not dreamed for a while.
His primary desire is that you know Him personally, and know what to do. Sometimes people dream repeatedly about something simply because it occupies their thoughts throughout the day. A person desiring for marriage may simply dream about weddings.
Someone constantly thinking about travelling abroad before he sleep may dream of airports and airplanes. You should also pay attention to repeated troubled dreams. God may use the same symbol several times because He is emphasizing a particular message.
For example, repeatedly dreaming about water, shoes, keys, roads, houses, children, snakes, birds, or money may deserve careful prayer and biblical study. While some symbols have common meanings in Scripture, their interpretation may differ depending on the context of the dream and the dreamer’s circumstances.
Never allow one dream to overthrow years of biblical truth. There are believers who have abandoned good churches, broken relationships, ended marriages, resigned from jobs, or rejected godly counsel simply because of one bad dream. Such decisions often bring unnecessary regret. God expects His children to act with wisdom, patience, and prayer.
Remember that your emotions can influence your dreams. A person carrying deep anxiety may dream about failure. Someone grieving may dream about the person they lost. A student preparing for examinations may dream about missing an exam.
Such dreams do not necessarily carry spiritual meanings in some cases. Sometimes they simply reflect what the mind has been processing before bed time. Wisdom helps us distinguish between emotional dreams and real dreams. One of the safest habits every believer can develop is keeping a dream journal.
Write down your dreams immediately after waking up. Record the date, the major events, the people involved, and how you felt. As time passes, you may notice patterns that help you understand how God communicates with you or how to know or test the source of your dream.
Not every frightening dream should be interpreted literally. For example, dreaming of death does not always mean physical death. Dreaming of water does not always refer to marine powers. Dreaming of snakes does not always have the same meaning for every person.
Dreaming of village does not always mean backwardness. Dreaming of sex does not always mean evil. Our mind can process these dreams to make it look real to us. This is why careless interpretation can mislead people, put people in bondage and create unnecessary fear.
Another important way to test the spirit behind a dream is to examine its timing and purpose. Ask yourself, “What is this dream trying to accomplish in my life?” Is it calling you to pray? Is it warning you to avoid a wrong decision? Is it encouraging you to remain faithful? Or is it simply creating unnecessary fear?
God never speaks without purpose. Every message from Him is intended to build, correct, protect, guide, warn or strengthen His children. You should also observe whether the dream takes away your peace or not. Some dreams occur only anytime you eat a particular food, wear a certain dress, or think about certain people.
Learn to distinguish between symbolic dreams and literal dreams. God often communicates through symbols. Pharaoh dreamed of seven fat cows and seven lean cows, yet the dream was not about cattle but about seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine.
Nebuchadnezzar saw a great image in his dream, but it represented kingdoms that would arise on the earth. This teaches us that not everything seen in a dream should be interpreted literally. Ask God for wisdom before assigning meaning to dream symbols.
Another important test is patience. Many believers rush to announce every dream before they understand it. They post it on social media, tell everyone around them, or make life-changing decisions immediately. Its important to wait upon the Lord to reveal the true meaning in clarity to you.
What seems confusing today may become clear as God continues to speak through His Word and by His Spirit. Avoid depending entirely on human interpretations. It is true that God uses mature believers, pastors, and gifted interpreters to help His people know the meaning of their dreams, no human being is totally accurate.
Every interpretation should be weighed prayerfully. Even when someone interprets your dream, take it back to God and ask Him for confirmation. Your confidence should ultimately rest in the Holy Spirit, not in human opinions. Never allow dreams or its interpretation to replace your relationship with God.
Some people become more interested in receiving dreams than praying about it. The greatest blessing is not having many dreams; it is testing the source of the dream. Remember the story of Samuel. As a young boy, he heard God calling him, but he did not immediately recognize God’s voice (1 Samuel 3:1-10).
It took the guidance of Eli before Samuel understood what was happening. In the same way, young believers may need the counsel of spiritually mature Christians to help them grow in discernment. There is no shame in seeking godly counsel when faced with confusing spiritual experiences.
Finally, remember that God is not the author of confusion. If a dream leaves you overwhelmed, anxious, or spiritually unstable, do not make hasty decisions. Pray, seek the Lord, and allow His peace to guard your heart. The Holy Spirit is faithful to guide sincere believers into truth.
The safest Christian is not the one who has the most dreams, but the one who has tested the source every dream he had. Jesus said, “ Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not”. God is expecting you to call Him enable you to recognize what comes from God and reject every counterfeit voice.
As you grow spiritually, your ability to discern will also grow. The Holy Spirit delights in leading believers who sincerely desire truth. Stay close to God, remain teachable, meditate on the Scriptures, and pray for wisdom daily. When your heart is yielded to the Lord, you will not easily be deceived, because the Spirit of Truth will continually guide you into all truth.

Daily Reflection
Ask Yourself:
- Do I test my dreams with the Word of God before accepting or acting on them?
- Have I ever made a major decision based solely on a dream without seeking God’s confirmation?
- Is my relationship with God strong enough to recognize His voice above every other voice?
- Do my dreams draw me closer to Christ, or do they leave me living in fear and confusion?
- What practical steps can I take to grow in spiritual discernment and become more sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit?
Wisdom for Today
“Sometimes God uses a dream to reveal a kind of prayer to pray. When He reveals a battle, He is inviting you to pray for breakthroug and victory.”
Personal Challenge
For the next seven days, keep a dream journal beside your bed. Each morning, write down any dream you remember and pray over it before seeking an interpretation. Don’t conclude over the dream yet. Prayerfully, compare every dream with the Word of God and ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom and understanding.
Evangelism Challenge
Share with someone today that God still speaks through His Word and guides His children with wisdom. Encourage them not to fear disturbing dreams but to seek Christ, pray for discernment, and trust the Holy Spirit to lead them into all truth.
