Opening Scriptures
Hebrews 12:1-2 (KJV)
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Luke 10:41-42 (KJV)
“And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
Memory Verse
Philippians 3:13-14 (KJV)
“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him (1 John 2:15).

EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: July 5, 2026 – Overcoming Distractions
One of the greatest distractions in the Christian life is trying to do what God has not called you to do. It is not every person you should have relationship with. It is not every person’s lifestyle you should emulate.
Many believers are exhausted today because they are carrying burdens God never asked them to carry. They are everywhere except where God wants them to be.
Moses understood his assignment. Joshua understood his assignment. David understood his assignment. The Apostle Paul understood his assignment. They did not waste their lives trying to become someone else. Paul said, “I have finished my course” (2 Timothy 4:7).
He did not say, “I finished Peter’s course” or “I finished John’s course.” He finished the race God had designed specifically for him. Sometimes distraction comes in the form of excessive worry. Jesus asked in Matthew 6:27, “Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?”
Worry consumes today’s strength without solving tomorrow’s problems. When you are worrying about what may happen next week, you may miss the opportunities God has placed before you today. Faith keeps your eyes on God’s promises, while worry keeps your eyes on your problems.
There are believers who are distracted by offence. They stop praying because someone offended them. They leave church because someone hurt their feelings. They abandon their ministry because they were not appreciated. The enemy understands that an offended heart is often an unproductive heart.
Jesus Himself was rejected by His own people, betrayed by Judas, denied by Peter, falsely accused, and crucified by sinners. Yet He never allowed offence to stop Him from completing His assignment.
Do not let criticism or bullying distract you from your goals. If you are determined to serve God faithfully, not everyone will understand your decisions. Some people will criticize you when you move forward, and the same people may criticize you if you remain where you are. Therefore, seek God’s approval above human approval.
Nehemiah provides a powerful example of focus. His enemies mocked him before they threatened him. When mockery failed, they attempted intimidation. When intimidation failed, they spread false accusations. Yet Nehemiah refused to abandon the work of God.
He answered, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down” (Nehemiah 6:3). That should become the attitude of every believer. Refuse to come down from your God-given assignment because of criticism, gossip, or opposition. Another distraction is spiritual laziness.
The enemy loves a believer who keeps postponing prayer, Bible study, fasting, and evangelism. One missed day becomes one missed week, and before long, the fire that once burned brightly begins to grow cold. Spiritual strength is not maintained accidentally; it is maintained intentionally.
Jesus said, “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation” (Matthew 26:41). A watchful believer is less likely to become distracted. Guard your mind carefully. The battle for your destiny often begins in your thoughts. Satan knows that if he can control your thinking, he can influence your decisions.
This is why Paul instructed believers in Philippians 4:8 to think on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report. Whatever occupies your mind will eventually influence your actions.
Learn to say “No.” Many destinies have been delayed because people found it difficult to refuse unnecessary invitations, unhealthy friendships, sinful pleasures, or activities that added no value to their lives.
Every “yes” to the wrong thing is often a “no” to something more important. Wisdom is knowing what deserves your attention and what does not. Distractions do not always come from strangers. Many times, they come through the people closest to us.
They can come through parents, friends, relatives, spouses, children, colleagues, neighbours, or even fellow believers. Sometimes these people do not intend to harm us; they simply do not understand God’s assignment upon our lives. Other times, the enemy may use them to divert our attention from God’s purpose.
Jesus Himself experienced this. When He told His disciples about His coming suffering and death, Peter immediately tried to discourage Him. Peter meant well because he loved his Master, but his words were contrary to God’s plan.
Jesus recognized the spiritual influence behind the distraction and said, “Get thee behind me, Satan… thou savourest not the things that be of God” (Matthew 16:21-23). This teaches us that even sincere people can unknowingly become instruments of distraction.
Parents can become distractions when they pressure their children to pursue careers, relationships, or lifestyles that are contrary to God’s direction. While parents deserve honour and respect, our ultimate obedience belongs to God. If Abraham had listened only to human reasoning, he might never have left his father’s house as God instructed him (Genesis 12:1-4).
Friends can also become distractions. The people you spend time with influence your thinking, decisions, and priorities. “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Corinthians 15:33). A friend who constantly encourages compromise, laziness, gossip, or disobedience is not helping your destiny.
Choose companions who inspire you to grow spiritually and remain faithful to God’s calling. Relationships have distracted many people from their divine purpose. Samson was distracted by Delilah and lost the secret of his strength (Judges 16). Solomon allowed ungodly relationships to turn his heart away from God (1 Kings 11:1-4).
A relationship that pulls you away from prayer, holiness, and obedience is not leading you closer to God’s purpose. There are relationships that consume so much emotional energy that a person gradually loses passion for God.
There are even family members who, out of ignorance or selfish interest, become obstacles to the assignment God has placed upon your life. This is why you must never allow your love for people to become greater than your commitment to God.
Jesus Himself said that anyone who loves father, mother, son, or daughter more than Him is not worthy of Him. This does not mean we should disrespect our families, but it teaches us that God must always have the highest place in our hearts. Whenever people begin to pull you away from God’s purpose, you must lovingly but firmly choose obedience to God
The devil is the master of distraction. If he cannot destroy your destiny, he will try to occupy your attention with things that seem harmless but gradually weaken your spiritual life. He may fill your schedule with activities that leave no time for prayer, Bible study, or fellowship with God.
He knows that a believer who neglects God’s presence becomes spiritually vulnerable. Distractions can also come through success. Not every blessing should become your primary focus. Sometimes people become so consumed or distracted by their careers, monies, businesses, or achievements that they gradually drift away from God.
The blessing becomes more important than the One who gave it. Jesus warned, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36). Even good opportunities can become distractions if they are outside God’s timing or assignment.
Every open door is not necessarily God’s door. Before saying “yes” to any opportunity, ask yourself, “Will this move me closer to God’s purpose or farther away from it?” Wisdom is not merely knowing what is good; it is knowing what is God’s best.
Believers who fulfil their destiny are not those who have the fewest distractions; they are those who refuse to give distractions control over their lives. Learn to say “no” when necessary. Guard your time. Protect your spiritual life. Keep your eyes on Christ. Every distraction you overcome brings you one step closer to the purpose for which God created you.
Another dangerous distraction is the distraction of comparison. Many people abandon God’s unique plan for their lives because they are busy comparing themselves with others. They look at another person’s success and begin to question God’s plan for them.
They become jealous, discouraged, and impatient. Before long, they leave the path God designed for them and begin chasing someone else’s assignment. The Bible tells us that when Peter asked Jesus about John’s future, Jesus replied, “If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me” (John 21:22).
In other words, Jesus was telling Peter, “Do not be distracted by another person’s assignment. Concentrate on yours.” God has a unique purpose for every believer. Your race is different from someone else’s race. Another distraction many people face is waiting for the perfect time.
They keep postponing what God has already instructed them to do. They say, “I will start when I have enough money,” “I will serve God when I settle down,” or “I will obey God next year.” The truth is that there is no perfect time. If Noah had waited for perfect weather before building the ark, he would have perished with the flood.
He obeyed God long before there was any sign of rain (Hebrews 11:7). Disappointment is another major distraction. Many believers stop praying because they have not yet received answers. Others stop serving God because someone offended them.
Some give up on their dreams because they experienced one failure. The enemy understands that discouragement can be more destructive than physical attacks. If he can make you lose hope, he has already frustrated your determination. Consider Elijah after his great victory over the prophets of Baal. One threat from Jezebel caused him to run into the wilderness, discouraged and ready to give up (1 Kings 19:1-4).
God did not abandon him. He strengthened him, spoke to him, and reminded him that his assignment was not over. Your present disappointment does not mean your destiny has ended. God still has a purpose for your life. Some distractions come through unnecessary arguments and offences.
There are people who spend more time defending themselves than fulfilling God’s assignment. Jesus faced criticism, false accusations, rejection, and insults, yet He never allowed them to stop Him from fulfilling His mission. If you respond to every criticism, every rumour, and every attack, you will have little time left to pursue your purpose.
The Apostle Paul remained focused despite imprisonment, persecution, shipwrecks, betrayal, and opposition. He understood that temporary difficulties could not compare with the eternal reward awaiting those who remain faithful. He declared, “This one thing I do…” (Philippians 3:13).
That statement reveals the secret of his success, he was focused. He refused to allow yesterday’s mistakes, today’s problems, or tomorrow’s uncertainties to distract him from God’s calling. Ask yourself today: What is stealing my attention from God? Is it worry?
Is it social media? Is it unhealthy friendships? Is it money? Is it entertainment? Is it bitterness? Is it the opinions of people? Is it my parents? Whatever constantly pulls your heart away from Christ or assignment deserves careful examination and lifestyle changes.
The devil does not always need to destroy a believer to stop his progress. Sometimes all he needs to do is keep the believer busy with things that have no eternal value. A distracted Christian may appear active, yet accomplish very little for the Kingdom of God. Activity is not the same as productivity.
Being busy is not the same as fulfilling God’s purpose. Another subtle distraction is trying to please everyone. It is impossible to satisfy every person around you. If you make people your primary focus, you will constantly change direction to gain their approval. Jesus healed many people, yet some still criticized Him.
He preached the truth, yet many rejected Him. If the Son of God could not please everyone, neither will you. Therefore, let your greatest desire be to please God. When your heart is set on pleasing Him, you will be free from the pressure of seeking human approval.
Therefore, determine today that your relationship with God will become your highest priority. Protect your prayer time. Protect your study of God’s Word. Protect your fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Protect the assignment God has given you. There will always be distractions, but there is only one life to fulfil the purpose for which God created you.
When your eyes remain fixed on Jesus, distractions gradually lose their power over you. The closer you walk with Him, the clearer your purpose becomes. Stay focused. Stay faithful. Stay committed. At the end of your journey, you will rejoice that you refused to allow temporary distractions to rob you of an eternal reward.
Furthermore, one area where many believers become distracted is after God begins to bless them. It is unfortunate that some people seek God passionately when they are in need, but once the blessings begin to come, their devotion gradually decreases. Their prayer life or other godly activities will be affected.
The God will lifted them will be treated as secondary in their life. Our daily activities should bring us closer to God, not farther away from Him. King Uzziah is a good example. The Bible says, “As long as he sought the LORD, God made him to prosper” (2 Chronicles 26:5).
However, after he became strong, “his heart was lifted up to his destruction” (2 Chronicles 26:16). Pride became a distraction. Instead of remaining within the assignment God had given him as king, he entered the priest’s office to burn incense, something God had not called him to do. His distraction led to his downfall.
There are also believers who become distracted by the pursuit of wealth. There is nothing wrong with being rich, but it becomes dangerous when money takes the place of God in your life. It becomes a problem when you focus too much on how to make money.
Jesus warned in Matthew 6:24, “Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Money is a good servant but a terrible master. Never allow your desire for financial success to replace your desire for God’s presence. Some people are distracted by people’s opinions.
They spend their lives trying to gain approval from everyone. They are afraid to obey God because they fear criticism, rejection, or misunderstanding. The Apostle Paul wrote in Galatians 1:10, “For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.”
If your goal is to please everyone, you will eventually compromise your convictions. Sometimes obeying God means standing alone. Another distraction is the pain of the past. Many people cannot move forward because they are constantly looking backward.
They remember the betrayal, the disappointment, the hurt, the abuse, the business failure, or the missed opportunity. While it is important to learn from the past, we must never become prisoners of it. Isaiah 43:18-19 says, “Remember ye not the former things… Behold, I will do a new thing.”
God cannot lead you into a new season if your heart refuses to leave the old one. The devil also uses comfort as a distraction. There are believers who no longer pursue growth because they have become too comfortable where they are.
They stop learning, they stop serving, they stop evangelizing, they stop praying, and they stop stretching their faith. Comfort zone is pleasant, but it can become the enemy of progress. God often calls His people out of comfortable places into greater assignments.
Abraham had to leave his father’s house. The disciples left their fishing boats. Elisha left his oxen. Great destiny often begins where comfort ends. You must also be careful not to become distracted by success in one area of your life while neglecting another.
Some people become so focused on building a career that they neglect their own family. Others become so busy in ministry that they ignore their health. Some pursue financial success as if there is nothing else to worship but neglect their relationship with God.
True success is living a balanced life under God’s direction. One powerful lesson we learn from Jesus is that He knew when to withdraw from the crowd. Although many people demanded His attention, He regularly withdrew to lonely places to pray (Luke 5:16).
If the Son of God needed quiet moments with the Father, how much more do we? Solitude with God is not a waste of time; it is where strength, wisdom, and direction are renewed.
Focus also means learning to finish what you start. One of the greatest weaknesses of many people is that they are excited at the beginning of every project but lose interest before the work is completed. They start reading a book but never finish it.
They begin a business but abandon it halfway. They enroll in a course but quit before graduation. They make New Year resolutions but forget them after a few weeks. This pattern of inconsistency prevents many people from reaching their full potential.
Ask yourself today: What is my primary assignment? What has God placed in my hands at this moment? Give your energy, time, and prayer to that assignment. Finish what God has started through you before rushing into something else. Don’t try to do too many things at the same time.
Focus on one assignment, complete it well, and then move on to the next. Divided attention often produces divided results. A focused mind accomplishes far more than a distracted one. When you give your best attention to the task God has placed before you, you increase your effectiveness, avoid unnecessary mistakes, and make steady progress toward fulfilling your purpose.
Do not mistake movement for progress. A person may be running all day without getting closer to the destination. Before becoming busy, make sure you are moving in the right direction. Climbing the wrong ladder faster will never lead you to the right place. Ask God to guide your priorities so that your efforts produce lasting results.
Do not try to do everything at once. Do the right thing at the right time, with all your heart. Stay focused on God’s calling, and He will give you the grace to accomplish far more than you ever imagined. Another enemy of focus is the desire for quick results.
We live in a generation that wants everything instantly. When people do not see immediate success, they become discouraged and move to something else. Yet God’s kingdom operates on the principle of growth and patience. A seed does not become a tree overnight. It must be planted, watered, protected, and given time to grow.
As you continue your journey with God, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal every distraction that is quietly stealing your attention. Some distractions are obvious, while others are subtle. They begin as harmless habits but gradually consume your time, taking away your mind off your goals, and slow your progress. Deal with them before they become strongholds.
Remember, your destiny is too valuable to be exchanged for temporary pleasures. Heaven has entrusted you with a unique assignment that no one else can fulfil exactly as you can. Stay faithful to that calling. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Refuse to come down from the work God has given you.
If you remain focused, disciplined, and dependent upon the Holy Spirit, you will finish your race with joy and receive the reward that God has prepared for those who remain faithful to the end. The battle against distraction is a battle for your destiny.
Every day, you will have to choose between what is important and what is urgent, between what pleases God and what pleases people, between temporary satisfaction and eternal reward. Those who fulfil their destiny are not necessarily the most gifted or the most intelligent; they are often the ones who remain focused until the end.
Never allow anything to become more important than your relationship with God. The moment your prayer life begins to suffer, your spiritual strength begins to decline. The moment you neglect God’s Word, you begin to find yourself doing what God has not ask you to do.
The moment you stop listening to the Holy Spirit, you become vulnerable to wrong decisions. Your intimacy with God is the greatest protection against distraction. Make it a habit to evaluate your life regularly. Ask yourself difficult questions. What is consuming most of my time?
What occupies my thoughts every day? What is taking my attention away from God? Am I becoming more fruitful or merely becoming busier? These questions will help you identify distractions before they become strongholds. You must also learn the discipline of setting priorities right.
Jesus always knew what His assignment was. Although thousands of people wanted His attention, He never allowed the urgency to replace His key purpose. There were times He refused to perform miracles simply to entertain people (Matthew 12:38-39).
There were times He walked away from popularity because His focus was the will of the Father. His life teaches us that purpose requires discipline. Do not envy people whose journeys appear easier than yours. God writes every person’s story differently.
Your assignment, your timing, your preparation, and your reward are unique. If you spend your life watching another person’s race, you may fail to complete your own. The Apostle Paul encouraged believers to “run with patience the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). Notice that God has given you a race to run.
If you have already been distracted, remember that God is merciful. Peter was distracted by fear when he denied Jesus, yet the Lord restored him and entrusted him with greater responsibility. Jonah was distracted by his own desires and fled from God’s assignment, yet God gave him another opportunity.
Samson lost his focus and suffered greatly, but in his final moments, he cried unto God and found mercy. These examples remind us that failure does not have to be the end of the story. God can restore a heart that genuinely returns to Him.
Beloved, every day you wake up, there will be something competing for your attention. The question is: What has your greatest attention? Is it your phone or your Bible? Is it social media or prayer? Is it worldly entertainment or fellowship with God?
Whatever consistently occupies your attention eventually shapes your character and determines your destiny. Determine today that you will protect your spiritual life. Guard your heart. Guard your time. Guard your relationships. Guard your thoughts. Learn to say “no” to anything that affects your walk with God.
The enemy only needs one successful distraction to delay a person’s destiny, but one decision to remain focused can change the course of your entire life. Never forget that your calling is too important to be abandoned, your destiny is too valuable to be exchanged, and your relationship with God is too precious to be sacrificed on the altar of temporary distractions.
Keep your eyes on Jesus, remain faithful to your assignment, and refuse to be moved by anything that seeks to pull you away from the purpose for which God created you. The God who called you will strengthen you, guide you, and give you the grace to finish your race with joy and with victory
From today, make a fresh commitment to God. Remove anything that is distracting you from your major assignment in life. Reduce unecessary activities that consume most of your time without adding real value to your destiny. Spend more time in prayer. Spend more time in the Word.
Spend more time serving God and loving people. Spend more time being in the right relationship. Don’t do many things at the same. Guard your heart, because whatever captures your heart will eventually direct your life.
Finally, keep your eyes on Jesus. He is not only the Author of your faith but also the Finisher of it (Hebrews 12:2). He knows the end from the beginning. He knows every challenge you will face and every distraction that will come your way.
If you remain close to Him, He will give you the wisdom to recognize distractions early, the strength to overcome them, and the grace to finish your assignment with joy. Never trade your calling for comfort. Never exchange your purpose for popularity.
Never sacrifice your destiny for temporary pleasure. Stay focused, remain faithful, and keep moving forward. The God who called you is faithful, and if you refuse to be distracted, you will complete your race and receive the crown that He has prepared for those who love Him.
Also, never lose sight of eternity. Life on earth is temporary, but eternity is forever. One day, every believer will stand before Christ to give an account of how they lived and served Him. On that day, God will not ask whether you were popular, wealthy, or admired by everyone.
He will ask whether you were faithful to the assignment He entrusted to you. Therefore, remain focused. Keep praying when others stop praying. Keep serving when others become weary. Keep believing when others give up. Keep obeying when others compromise.
The race may not always be easy, but God has promised to strengthen those who trust in Him. If you refuse to be distracted, you will not only reach your destination, you will also hear those wonderful words from the Lord: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:21
Focus also requires patience. God may not answer every prayer immediately, but that does not mean He has forgotten you. Continue praying. Continue serving. Continue believing. Continue working diligently. The farmer does not dig up the seed every morning to see whether it is growing. He trusts the process until the harvest comes.
Finally, remember that your greatest competition is not another person. Your greatest challenge is remaining faithful to the assignment God has given you. If you keep comparing yourself with others, you will become distracted. If you keep looking at what others are doing, you may neglect what God has called you to do.
Lift your eyes from the crowd and fix them on Christ. Let His Word direct your steps. Let His Spirit guide your decisions. Stay faithful in the little things. Complete every assignment God places in your hands.
In due season, He will reward your consistency, honour your faithfulness, and establish the work of your hands. Those who remain focused today are the ones who become tomorrow’s testimonies.
Prophetic Declaration
I prophesy over your life today that every spirit of distraction assigned to divert you from your divine purpose is broken, in the mighty name of Jesus.
From this day forward, the Lord shall give you a focused mind, a disciplined spirit, and a heart that is fully committed to His will. You shall not be distracted by fear, temptation, worldly pleasures, wrong relationships, or the opinions of people.
I decree that every power wasting your time, energy, and opportunities shall be destroyed by the fire of God. Every assignment you have left unfinished because of discouragement or delay shall receive fresh grace for completion.
May the Holy Spirit order your priorities and help you distinguish between what is urgent and what is truly important. You shall not pursue the wrong opportunities or miss the doors God has opened for you.
I declare that your eyes shall remain fixed on Jesus. Your faith shall not fail. Your prayer life shall grow stronger. Your passion for God’s Word shall increase, and your love for His presence shall never grow cold.
Every voice calling you away from your God-given assignment shall be silenced. Every evil invitation designed to waste your destiny shall lose its power over your life.
I prophesy that you shall complete every assignment God has entrusted to you. You shall not abandon your calling halfway. You shall not become weary in well-doing. The grace to endure until the end shall rest upon you.
May the Lord grant you wisdom to make the right decisions, courage to say “no” to distractions, and strength to remain steadfast when challenges arise. Your labour shall not be in vain, and your efforts shall produce lasting fruit.
Daily Reflection
Ask Yourself:
- What distractions are currently taking my attention away from God and His purpose for my life?
- Am I spending more time on urgent things than on the things that truly matter?
- Is there any habit, relationship, or activity that is slowing down my spiritual growth or delaying my destiny?
- Have I been faithful in completing the assignments God has entrusted to me, or do I easily give up halfway?
- What practical changes can I make today to stay focused on God’s calling and finish my race successfully?
Wisdom for Today
Anything that consistently takes your attention away from God and your divine purpose is a distraction, no matter how attractive it appears.
Personal Challenge
This week, identify the three biggest distractions that are stealing your time, focus, or preventing you from serving God faithfully. Prayerfully remove or reduce them and replace that time with activities that draw you closer to God, such as prayer, Bible study, personal development, or working on the assignment God has given you.
Set clear priorities for each day and focus on completing one important task before moving to another. Refuse to allow social media, unnecessary conversations, unhealthy relationships, arguement, or fear to distract you from your purpose. Remember, your destiny is too valuable to be sacrificed on the altar of distraction or conflict with others. Stay focused, remain faithful, and finish your God-given assignment.
Evangelism Challenge
Encourage someone today who has become discouraged or distracted from following Christ. Share a Bible verse that strengthens their faith, pray with them, and remind them that a focused life centered on Jesus leads to a fruitful and victorious destiny.
