MESSAGE: EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: May 28, 2026 – The Danger of Living to Impress Others

One of the greatest forms of bondage is not always witchcraft, curses, or spiritual attacks. Sometimes, a person can be in bondage to the opinions of people. There are many people who cannot make decisions on their own until they know what others will think about them.

Their happiness depends largely on people’s approval. Their confidence rises when they are praised by others and falls when they are criticized. Such a life is dangerous because it places human opinion above God’s direction.

Many people are carrying burdens that God never gave them because they are trying to impress others. They buy expensive things to prove they are successful. They buy an expensive car to maintain a profile.

They organisative expensive wedding just to impress people. They pretend to be happy while with friend when they are hurting. They pretend to be rich when they are struggling, including their family. They pretend to be a prayer warriot when they are spiritually dry.

God never called us to perform for people. He called us to walk with Him. One reason many people lose their peace is because they are constantly comparing themselves with others. Comparison is a distration and also a thief. It steals your joy, happiness and confidence.

When you compare yourself with others, you begin to focus on what you do not have instead of appreciating what God has already given you. You may see someone driving a new car and feel left behind. You may see someone getting married and tired about your own life.

You may see another person’s ministry growing and begin to question your calling. But what you see externally is not always the complete story. Some people are smiling publicly while fighting secret battles privately. Some are carrying burdens that you know nothing about.

The Bible tells us that God has different assignments, different timings, and different seasons for different people. Joseph became a ruler in Egypt at a different time. David became king at a different time.

Moses entered leadership at a different time. Their journeys were different, but God’s purpose was fulfilled in each of their lives. The moment you begin to understand that God is writing a unique story for you, comparison loses its power.

The fear of rejection has pushed many people away from God’s will. Remember that the same crowd that shouted “Hosanna” to Jesus later shouted “Crucify Him.” Human praise is unstable. If your confidence is built upon people’s approval, your emotions will always be unstable because people’s opinions change quickly.

That is why Jesus focused on pleasing His Father rather than pleasing the crowd. There were times when people misunderstood Him. There were times when they heavily criticized Him. There were times when they rejected Him. Yet He remained committed to His divine assignment.

A believer must develop spiritual maturity to continue obeying God even when people disagree. Another danger of living to impress others is that it can lead to unnecessary competition. Competition often creates pressure to prove yourself to people.

Instead of seeking God’s direction, they begin chasing what others are chasing. They enter businesses God never told them to enter. They relocate without divine instruction. They abandon their calling because someone else’s path appears more attractive and lucrative.

When God called David, He did not ask him to become Saul. When God called Peter, He did not ask him to become John. God does not need copies. He desires originals. Your greatest success in life is not becoming like someone else. Your greatest success is becoming the person God created you to be.

Many believers miss their own blessings because they are too busy watching other people’s lives. Watching the cloth they put on, the shoe they were, or how many times they laugh in the day. While God is speaking to them about their own assignment, they are distracted by what others are doing.

They become discouraged because their lives do not look attractive to them or look like someone else’s. But God measures success differently. The world celebrates popularity. God celebrates faithfulness.

The world celebrates appearance. God examines the heart. The world celebrates influence. God rewards obedience. The world celebrates recognition. God honours humility.

You may not have millions of followers, you may not be the richest person in your family, you may be struggling in life, but if you are obeying God, heaven recognizes you. You may not be famous, but if you are faithful to God, your reward is secured. You may not receive applause from people (men), but if God is pleased with your life, you are truly successful.

There are people in Scripture whose names are barely mentioned, yet they played important roles in God’s plan. Heaven remembers those whom the world may overlook. God does not judge according to human standards. A wise believer understands that there is no shame in starting small.

There is no shame in gradual progress. There is no shame in trusting God’s timing. The person who lives for God’s approval enjoys a freedom that many people never experience. They are free from unnecessary pressure. They are free from unhealthy competition. They are free from pretending. They are free from living a double life.

They can rejoice with those who rejoice without feeling threatened. They can celebrate others without jealousy. They can wait patiently for God’s timing without panic. One of the secrets of peace is learning to be comfortable with God’s process.

Your life is not a race against other people. It is a journey with God. When God blesses another person, it does not mean He has forgotten you. When another person receives a breakthrough, it does not mean your miracle has been cancelled. God has enough blessings for everyone. Your testimony will arrive at the appointed time if you remain faithful.

Living to impress people can also destroy your finances. Many people are suffering financially because they are trying to maintain a borrowed lifestyle. They spend money they do not have just to impress people who do not truly care about them. They live beyond their means because they want to appear successful.

Living to impress others is one of the silent traps many people are falling into today. Some people no longer live according to God’s will for their life anymore; they live according to people’s approval and perception about them. They dress, talk, post, spend, serve, and make decisions just to be praised by men.

When a person lives to impress others, they may begin to lose their own true identity. They may pretend to be what they are not. They may borrow to appear rich, lie to appear successful, or struggle to please people who do not even care about their destiny.

Some people are in debt today because they want people to think they are doing well in life. Some are in relationships today because they want to prove they are not cursed. Some are pretending to talk the way others are talking because they want to prove to the society they have mentors.

But God does not bless pretence; He blesses truth, humility, and obedience. Many destinies have been delayed because some people wanted to impress others. Some remained in houses God never assigned them to live.

Some have changed the school of their children from public to private God never gave them the go ahead just because they wanted to send a message to others that they are doing well.

Some bought things they could not afford because they wanted people to think they were successful. In the process, they lost their peace, joy, focus, finances, and sometimes their purpose. Jesus Himself faced criticism throughout His ministry. The religious leaders mocked Him. Some people rejected His teachings.

Others doubted His authority. Yet Jesus never changed His mission to gain their approval. He remained focused on the assignment given to Him by His Father. Had Jesus lived to impress people, He would never have fulfilled His divine purpose. Many believers are making the same mistake today.

They spend more time maintaining appearances than building character. They focus more on looking spiritual than actually growing spiritually. They want people to see their achievements but neglect their relationship with God. Yet God does not measure a person by appearance. He measures the heart.

1 Samuel 16:7 (KJV) says: “For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”

People may admire your appearance, but God examines your motives. People may praise your success, but God evaluates your faithfulness. People may celebrate your achievements, but God looks at your obedience.

Another danger is that it can produce anxiety and worry. When your happiness depends on people’s approval, you will never truly rest. Someone’s criticism can ruin your day. Someone’s rejection can destroy your confidence. Someone’s opinion can determine your mood.

Such a life becomes unstable because it depends on man’s acceptance rather than God’s acceptance. The danger is that the more you live for people’s applause, the farther you may move away from God’s purpose. People’s praise is temporary, but God’s approval is eternal. Men may clap for you today and criticize you tomorrow.

But when God approves your life, no man can stop your destiny. The apostle Paul understood this principle very well. He boldly declared that he could not be a servant of Christ if his primary goal was to please men. Paul was beaten, rejected, imprisoned, and falsely accused.

Yet he remained faithful because his focus was God’s approval, not human applause. A person who lives for God’s approval develops stability. Whether people praise him or criticize him, he remains focused. Whether people support him or oppose him, he continues obeying God. His confidence comes from knowing who he is in Christ.

Many people spend years trying to impress relatives who never become satisfied. They sacrifice their peace trying to gain acceptance from friends who continue to criticize them. They chase validation from society, only to discover that public opinion changes constantly. What pleases people today may offend them tomorrow.

This is why your true identity must be rooted in God and not in people. If you know who God says you are, you will not constantly seek confirmation from others. When you understand your value in Christ, you will not desperately pursue human validation.

The prodigal son learned a painful lesson. He left his father’s house seeking acceptance and pleasure elsewhere. Eventually, he discovered that true fulfillment was not found in impressing people but in returning to the father’s presence. Likewise, many people today are exhausted because they are chasing recognition instead of seeking God.

Living to impress others can also hinder obedience. Sometimes God will ask you to do something that others do not understand. Noah built an ark when there was no rain. Abraham left his homeland without knowing where he was going. Moses confronted Pharaoh despite overwhelming challenges.

If these men had depended on public opinion or having a fear of what people may say, they would never have fulfilled their assignments. Do not live your life trying to prove a point to people. Live to please God. Let your heart be sincere. Let your service be genuine.

Let your lifestyle be guided by the Word of God, not by competition, pride, pressure, or social comparison. A life built on impressing people will soon become heavy, tiring, and empty.  But a life built on pleasing God will bring peace, joy, and fulfillment.  Do not live to prove a point to people. Live to fulfil God’s purpose.

The danger of comparison is that it can make you despise your own season. There are seasons when obedience to God may make you look foolish before men. There are times when following God’s instructions may attract criticism. Yet obedience always produces a greater reward from God than men’s approval.

Remember this truth: people did not create your destiny, and they cannot determine your future. The God who called you is the One whose opinion matters most. People may misunderstand you, but God understands your purpose. People may reject you, but God can still elevate you. People may overlook you, but God can still promote you.

The healthiest way to live is to seek God’s approval first. Let your choices be guided by His Word. Let your identity be anchored in Christ. Let your confidence come from His promises. When God is pleased with your life, you can walk in peace regardless of what others think.

At the end of your life, you will not stand before friends, relatives, critics, or followers. You will stand before God. Therefore, live in such a way that your greatest desire is not to hear the applause of men but to hear the words: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:21)

The day you stop living to impress people is the day you begin to enjoy true freedom. The day you start living for God’s glory is the day your life gains genuine purpose, direction, and lasting peace When you live to impress others, you become a prisoner of their expectations.

But when you live to please God, you walk in peace, humility, contentment, and divine direction. Today, make a decision to stop living to impress men through eye service. Refuse to measure your worth by likes, comments, titles, possessions,  popularity, gift, or the number of praises you received.

Instead, ask yourself one important question: “Is God pleased with the way I am living?” At the end of life, the applause of men will not matter. The opinions of critics will not matter. The comparisons will not matter. What will matter is hearing the words: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:21).

May God deliver us from the fear of man and give us the grace to live boldly for His glory alone, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Wisdom for Today

Never lose yourself trying to become what people will admire. But be faithful to God, and let Him alone beautify your life in His own time.
