EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: September 2, 2026 – Breaking Evil Soul Ties

A soul tie is a spiritual bond formed between two people, or between a person and a spirit, through covenant, through intimacy, through prolonged emotional attachment, or through a shared experience that opens the inner man of one person to the inner man of another.

The Bible shows soul ties in both directions, the godly kind, as with Jonathan and David, where their souls were knit together for good, and the ungodly kind, as with the man who joins himself to a harlot, where the Scripture says the two become one flesh.

A soul tie is not something you can see with your natural eye, but it is real, and it is strong, because it operates in the realm of the spirit, and the spirit realm governs the natural realm.

Once a soul tie is formed, whatever affects one party can travel through that tie and affect the other party, whether that party is a former lover, a false friend, a manipulative parent, a dead relative, or a demonic spirit disguised as a companion.

Let us look at how these ties are formed, and why so many struggle to walk free even after they have physically separated from the source.

Through Blood Covenant

Blood is the strongest covenant substance recognized in the spirit realm, because life itself is in the blood. Leviticus 17:11 says, for the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.

This is why traditional societies, cult groups, and secret fraternities use blood, whether through cutting the skin, mixing blood, or animal sacrifice, to bind members together, because they understand what the Bible already established, that a blood covenant reaches the soul, not just the body.

Anyone who entered a blood covenant knowingly, in initiation, in a secret society, in a traditional marriage rite involving blood, or even in a childhood pact of “blood brothers” with a friend, carries a tie that natural distance alone cannot undo.

I have sat before young men who still could not fully break away from old cult associates, not because they lacked willpower, but because a blood covenant made at seventeen years old was still legally standing in the spirit, and every attempt to walk in a new direction was met with resistance, sickness, or strange coincidences pulling them back.

Such a covenant is only broken by a covenant of greater blood, and 1 Peter 1:18-19 tells us we are redeemed, not with corruptible things, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. The blood of Jesus outweighs and overrides every blood covenant a person has ever entered, knowingly or ignorantly.

Through Vow

A vow is a verbal covenant, and Scripture treats the spoken vow with the same seriousness as a written contract. Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 says, when thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it, for he hath no pleasure in fools, pay that which thou hast vowed.

Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. If this principle applies to vows made to God, how much more does the enemy hold a person to careless vows made in emotional or romantic moments, statements like “I will love you till I die,” “no one else will ever have my heart,” or “if you leave me, I will never be happy again.”

Such words are not empty; they are legal declarations that the enemy records and uses as an anchor point long after the relationship that produced them has ended. This also includes vows made in traditional marriage rites, in initiation ceremonies, and even vows made silently in the heart during grief or heartbreak, as we saw with the widow who vowed inwardly that her heart would remain buried with her husband.

Every such vow must be found, named specifically, and renounced by mouth, because a vow made by mouth requires a renunciation made by mouth to be legally undone; silent regret is not enough.

Through Dream

The dream realm is a legitimate spiritual meeting ground, and covenants formed there carry the same weight as covenants formed while awake, sometimes greater weight, because the conscious will that might resist in the daytime is asleep and undefended at night.

Job 33:15-16 tells us that in a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed, then God openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction. If God uses the dream realm to communicate and to seal instruction, the enemy uses the very same realm to communicate and to seal bondage.

This is exactly how a spirit spouse operates, as we saw in an earlier devotional, but soul ties in dreams are broader than that; they include being given a ring, a cloth, an object, or food in a dream by any person or spirit, being taken through a wedding, a covenant meeting, or a blood-drinking ceremony while asleep, or repeatedly dreaming of intimacy with a person the individual has never been physically involved with in the natural.

Such dream encounters are not “just dreams.” They are transactions, and every transaction produces a receipt in the spirit realm. Numbers 12:6 confirms that the Lord speaks in dreams; the enemy counterfeits everything God does, and the dream realm is one of his most active courtrooms.

Any soul tie sealed in the dream is broken the same way it was formed, in the spirit, through the authority of the name of Jesus and the covering of His blood, applied specifically to that particular dream encounter.

Through Sexual Relationships

Of all the ways a soul tie is formed, this is the one Scripture addresses most directly, because the sexual act was designed by God to be the sealing point of a covenant, not a casual exchange. 1 Corinthians 6:16 makes it plain, what, know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body, for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.

Notice the wording, it does not say two bodies are joined, it says two become one flesh, meaning something is fused, not merely touched. This is why God reserved that act for the covenant of marriage alone, because only marriage carries the legal covering to sustain what that act produces in the spirit.

Outside of that covering, every sexual encounter deposits something of one person into the other, and it also withdraws something. This is why a person can be in a brand new relationship, doing everything right on the outside, and still feel an inexplicable pull back toward a former partner, still compare every new person to the old one without meaning to, still carry unexplained shame or attachment years after the relationship ended physically.

The body moved on, but the flesh, in the spiritual sense Paul describes, did not. I have counselled men and women, married for years, still secretly bound in spirit to someone from their past, faithful in body but divided in soul, wondering why intimacy in their marriage feels hollow, not realizing that an old tie is still drawing from a well it was never disconnected from.

Genesis 2:24 says a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh, showing that God’s design for oneness was always meant to be singular and exclusive.

Every prior sexual soul tie outside that design must be individually renounced, named where possible, and severed by the blood of Jesus Christ, because a tie formed through the flesh is answered through the blood that was shed in the flesh, at Calvary.

Through Soul Ties With The Dead

This is a channel many believers walk through without knowing it, because grief is natural, but certain responses to grief cross from mourning into covenant.

Deuteronomy 18:10-11 warns strongly against one that seeks after the dead, listing it among the abominations the Lord hates, because contact and fixation with the dead opens a door into a realm the living were never authorized to keep open.

This soul tie forms in several ways, when a person makes an inward or spoken vow at a burial never to love again, when a person keeps a deceased spouse’s belongings arranged as though that person will return, when a person speaks to a photograph or grave as though the departed can still hear and respond, or when a person’s decisions in the present are still being governed by what the dead person would have wanted, rather than by present counsel and the present will of God.

Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 tells us plainly that the dead know not any thing, their love, their hatred, and their envy is now perished, they have no more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. This scripture is not unkind, it is protective, it is God telling His people not to build ongoing spiritual transactions with those who can no longer participate in this realm.

The widow mentioned earlier is not a rare case; many carry similar unspoken vows from funerals, from the loss of a parent, from the loss of a child, and that grief, however genuine, becomes the very tie that keeps their present life bound to a season that has already closed.

Luke 20:38 reminds us that God is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all live unto Him, showing that our present covenant obligations belong to the living, to God, and to whoever He places in our path now, not to a covenant frozen at a graveside.

Breaking this tie requires the same pattern as every other, naming the specific vow or attachment, renouncing it by mouth, forgiving where grief has hardened into resentment against those left behind, and applying the blood of Jesus to release both the living person and the memory of the departed from a bond that was never meant to outlive the body.

Breaking Evil Soul Ties Through Gift or Money

Not every gift is innocent, and not every financial help comes without a string attached in the spirit realm. This is one of the most overlooked channels through which people are bound, because it does not look spiritual on the surface, it looks like kindness, sponsorship, or generosity, yet in the unseen realm, a transaction has taken place that can hold a person for years.

Scripture gives a clear example in the story of Gehazi in 2 Kings 5:20-27. Naaman offered Elisha gifts after his healing, and Elisha refused, because he understood that receiving a gift from that particular source, at that particular moment, would open a door that God had not sanctioned.

Gehazi, Elisha’s servant, ran after Naaman secretly, collected silver and garments that were never meant for him, and the very leprosy that left Naaman’s body attached itself to Gehazi and his descendants forever. That gift was not just money, it was a covenant transfer, and it carried consequences that outlived the transaction itself.

This is exactly how it works today. When a person receives money, sponsorship, business capital, school fees, a car, a building, or any substantial gift from a source operating under a covenant of darkness, whether the giver is an occultist, a cult member, a secret society sponsor, or even a well-meaning relative who dedicated their wealth to a false god, that gift carries the nature of its source into the receiver’s life.

Ecclesiastes 5:8 speaks of the higher power watching over the affairs of a matter, and in the spirit realm, every gift has a covering power watching over what it produces.

I have sat with young men who received sudden, unexplainable financial breakthroughs from a distant relative abroad, only to find every other area of their life crumbling from that same season, marriage delayed, health under attack, peace of mind gone, because the money came from an account still tied to a covenant made by that relative to a spirit for prosperity, and receiving from that account meant receiving from that same well.

This also happens in romantic relationships, where a partner showers another with gifts specifically to create dependency and control. Proverbs 22:7 says, the rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. This is not only a financial principle; it is a spiritual one.

A gift given with hidden manipulative intent creates a master and servant tie, even where no natural conversation ever names it that way. The receiver begins to feel obligated, unable to leave, unable to say no, unable to fully walk in independence, because something in them senses a debt that was never formally spoken but is spiritually recorded.

There is also the matter of inherited wealth or property that was dedicated to idols before it reached a person’s hand.

A house, a farmland, a family business built on proceeds from occult practice, ritual, or exploitation carries a tie back to that origin, and everyone who benefits from it unknowingly remains connected to the covenant that produced it, until it is specifically addressed.

Joshua 7 tells the story of Achan, who took the accursed thing from Jericho and hid it among his belongings, and that single hidden item brought defeat upon the whole camp of Israel, not because Achan alone sinned, but because what he kept was under a covenant of destruction, and it spread its nature to everything connected to it.

The way out is not to live in suspicion of every gift or every act of kindness, because God also uses people to bless His children generously and freely, as seen throughout Scripture with the Macedonian church in 2 Corinthians 8, and there was no bondage in that giving, only love.

The difference lies in the source, the intent, and the spirit behind the gift. Where a gift was received in ignorance from a source now known to carry a covenant of darkness, or where a gift was used deliberately to create control, that specific gift, that specific source, and that specific transaction must be renounced by name, and every legal claim attached to it must be broken by the blood of Jesus Christ.

Acts 8:20 gives the pattern, when Peter told Simon the sorcerer, thy money perish with thee, refusing outright to let a corrupted financial offer establish any covenant with the gospel.

Sometimes the way out is not just prayer, it is also the practical decision to return, discard, or completely separate from an item or a source once its true nature is discovered, because a prayer prayed while still holding on to the accursed thing is a prayer fighting itself.

How To Break An Evil Soul Tie

Breaking a soul tie is not a mysterious process reserved for great deliverance ministers alone; it is something every believer can walk through personally, once the steps are followed correctly and honestly. Let it be said plainly, deliverance is not magic, it is legal, spiritual warfare fought and won through specific, and obedient steps. Here is the pattern Scripture and years of ministration have shown to work.

Step One: Identify the Tie Specifically

General prayer does not break a specific bondage. Before anything else, sit down before God and be honest about what or who you are tied to. Was it a person, a vow, a dream encounter, a gift, a blood covenant, a dead relative? Hosea 4:6 says my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. You cannot renounce what you refuse to name. Write it down if you must. Name the person, the event, the words spoken, the circumstance.

Step Two: Confess It Openly Before God

Do not hide it, do not minimize it, do not explain it away. 1 John 1:9 says if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Confession is not for God’s information, it is for your own deliverance, because confession removes the covering of shame that the enemy uses to keep that door hidden and active.

Step Three: Forgive Where Forgiveness Is Required

Whether the tie was formed through abuse, betrayal, manipulation, or heartbreak, forgiveness must be extended, not because the offender deserves it, but because unforgiveness itself becomes a fresh rope holding you to that same person. Matthew 6:14-15 makes it a condition, for if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Many soul ties reform after being cut simply because bitterness reopened the very wound that was closed.

Step Four: Renounce the Tie Verbally, By Name

This step must not be skipped or rushed. Say it out loud: “I renounce the soul tie between me and [name the person, the vow, the covenant, or the dream encounter], in the name of Jesus Christ.” A tie formed by spoken word or physical union is undone by spoken renunciation. Silent regret in the heart is not sufficient; Romans 10:9-10 shows that confession with the mouth carries spiritual authority alongside belief in the heart.

Step Five: Apply the Blood of Jesus Directly to That Point

After renouncing, plead the blood of Jesus specifically over that area, that memory, that relationship, that transaction. Revelation 12:11 says they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony. This is not a general prayer of blessing; it is a targeted application, the same way a doctor applies medicine to a wound, not to the whole body.

Step Six: Break Every Physical Point of Contact That Still Feeds the Tie

If there are items, gifts, photographs, clothing, letters, or any object connected to the person or covenant, remove them from your possession. Acts 19:19 shows new believers in Ephesus bringing their books of magic and burning them publicly, counting the cost, because they understood that certain objects keep spiritual transactions alive. A prayer prayed while still sleeping under the same blanket given by the tie is a prayer working against itself.

Step Seven: Refuse Re-Entry Through the Same Door

Once a tie is broken, guard the same door that let it in. If it was formed through a pattern of relationships, change the pattern. If through a friendship circle, adjust the circle. Matthew 12:43-44 warns that an empty house, if left unguarded, invites the same spirit back with reinforcement. Deliverance without a changed lifestyle is deliverance that will not last.

Step Eight: Fill the Empty Space With the Word and the Holy Ghost

An empty house must not remain empty. Matthew 12:44-45 makes this clear as the reason many deliverances reverse. Replace what was removed with prayer, with the word of God, with genuine fellowship, and with the Holy Ghost filling the space that the old tie used to occupy. Ephesians 5:18 says be filled with the Spirit; a filled vessel has no room for the old tenant to return.

A Simple Prayer to Pray Through Each Step

“Father, I confess the soul tie between me and __________. I forgive them, and I forgive myself. I renounce this tie completely, in the name of Jesus Christ. I apply the blood of Jesus over every point of contact, every memory, and every transaction connected to it. I remove every object and pattern that fed this tie. I ask You to fill every empty space in my soul with Your Holy Spirit. From today, I am tied only to You, in the name of Jesus. Amen.”

Breaking a soul tie is not a one-time emotional outburst; it is a deliberate, step-by-step legal transaction in the spirit, carried out with honesty, obedience, and the blood of Jesus Christ applied specifically where it is needed. Galatians 5:1 says stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free. Walk through these steps sincerely, and what has held you for years will let go today.
