Topic: You Have Not Asked What God Asked You To Ask

Opening Scriptures

1 Kings 3:5-13 (KJV)

“In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy… Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad… And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing… behold, I have done according to thy words…And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour…”

Matthew 7:7-8 (KJV)

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”

Memory Verse

James 4:2 (KJV)

“Ye have not, because ye ask not.”

EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: July 8, 2026 – You Have Not Asked What God Asked You To Ask

Prayer is one of the greatest privileges God has given to every believer. Through it, we communicate with the Father, present our requests before Him, and receive grace, mercy, wisdom, strength, and direction. Yet, many believers spend years praying without ever asking the right questions or making the requests that God truly desires to answer.

Many of us pray every day, but there is one important question we need to ask ourselves: “Am I really asking God for what He wants me to ask for?” God is calling us to engage with Him through prayer. Jesus said, “Ask, and it shall be given you.” This shows that God is always willing to answer our prayers.

He delights in blessing His children. However, the problem is that many believers are asking for things while ignoring the very prayers God expects them to pray. Sometimes, we become so focused on asking for money, promotion, marriage, children, visas, healing, or breakthroughs that we forget to ask for the things that matter most to God

There are times when God is saying, “Before I give you that blessing, I want you to ask for mercy. I want you to forgive that person. I want you to repent. I want you to seek Me first. I want you to pray for wisdom, pray for your friends, and pray for My will to be done in your life.”

There is power in asking rightly. It is important that we ask the right questions so that we do not end up doing the wrong thing. When you ask according to God’s heart, you position yourself to receive the right answer at the right time. And when you pray in alignment with what God desires, you will truly thrive in life.

Many people do the right things at the wrong time. Imagine a wealthy man visiting an orphanage to bless the children. He arrives at the center intending to donate bags of rice, and the staff deeply appreciate his love and kindness. However, what if that orphanage already has enough rice stored up?

Their greatest need at that moment might actually be school uniforms, books, mattresses, clothing, or cooking utensils. The man will still receive his reward, because God honors every act of kindness. But if he had first asked, “What do you need most?”, his gift could have solved their most pressing problem at that time.

If his flesh led him to give those things purely out of human wisdom, the impact is limited compared to someone led by the Spirit of God. This is exactly how many of us approach God. We keep asking for what we think is important to us without first asking Him what He wants to do in our lives.

We are convinced that we know our greatest need, but the One who created us knows us better than we know ourselves. Now imagine if the man had first asked them, “What do you need most?” His gift would have been more meaningful because it would have met their most pressing need.

That kind of intentional giving provides exactly what is required for the moment. Many of us pray in the very same way. We keep bringing our own rigid lists of requests before God without ever pausing to ask Him, “Lord, what do You want me to pray about? What is Your priority for my life right now?”

God knows tomorrow better than we do. He sees dangers we cannot see, and He knows the blessings we are not yet prepared to handle. He knows the exact prayers that can save us from hidden problems, and He sees the spiritual battles taking place behind the scenes.

That is why His priorities are often entirely different from ours. There are people praying for a financial breakthrough when the real issue is unforgiveness and God is simply waiting for them to let go of the offense.

There are people praying for marriage while God is telling them to deal with their character, and others are demanding a promotion while God is waiting for them to become faithful in their current assignment.

Some are crying out for open doors while completely ignoring the doors of repentance that God has placed right before them. The Bible warns in James 4:3, “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss…” This means it is entirely possible to pray sincerely and still pray wrongly.

God is not only interested in the sincerity of your heart; He is deeply invested in the direction of your prayers. There are seasons when the prayer God expects from you is not, “Lord, bless me,” but “Lord, search my heart.” Sometimes the prayer should not be, “O Lord, give me a new job,” but “Lord, grant me wisdom.”

Other times, it is not, “Father, fight my enemies,” but “Lord, forgive me and have mercy on me.” Sometimes the cry should not be, “O Lord, take me to the next level,” but “Lord, prepare me for the next level.”

Many believers remain stuck in the same position because they keep repeating the same prayers while God is waiting for a completely different conversation. Imagine a child begging his father for a car, while the father is saying, “First, I need you to learn how to drive.”

The father is not denying the child’s request; he is protecting and preparing the child for the blessing. God is a wise Father. He does not simply answer every request because we ask it. He answers according to His wisdom, His timing, and His purpose.

What He gives you will always be better than what you could have chosen for yourself. This is why every prayer should begin with surrender, repentance and gratitude. Before presenting your requests, ask God to reveal His mind concerning your situation.

Ask God to teach you how to pray. Say, “Father, teach me what to pray about to pave the way for my testimony. Show me what You want me to ask for. Help me to pray according to Your will.” When your prayers begin to align with God’s purpose, you will discover that many doors begin to open naturally.

You will discover that those things you struggle to get will become very easy. You will discover that God will begin to answer your prayer faster.

It is wrong to spend your entire Christian life asking only for what you want. We must learn to ask for what God wants. In Matthew 6:9-13, Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, giving us a model meant to guide our daily conversations with God-keeping Him first while asking for His will, His forgiveness, and His daily provision

The greatest breakthrough is not about getting your own desires fulfilled; but it is by discovering God’s desire for your life and praying until His will is established. When you begin to ask what God is asking you to ask, your prayers become more effective, your faith becomes stronger, and your life begins to move in the direction of His perfect plan.

Many of us pray sincerely, but we are asking for the wrong things or overlooking the matters that carry the most weight in God’s sight. Imagine a woman meeting a wealthy man for the very first time and immediately demanding that he buy her a car.

He may look at her in surprise, not because he cannot afford it, but because her request is completely inappropriate for that moment.  He may wonder within himself, “Why didn’t you ask for something smaller or more appropriate?”

Similarly, there are some demands that are not necessary in your relationship with someone, and there are requests that will cause you to miss the purpose of the opportunity you have been given.

Many people approach God this way, without ever seeking to know what He wants them to say. God is not limited by resources; He can easily give you a car and much more. However, there are times when He expects you to ask for wisdom instead of wealth, or repentance instead of warfare prayer.

When your prayers agree with God’s will, you position yourself to receive answers that will transform your life. The secret is not just to ask, but to ask what God wants you to ask. God is not offended when we ask Him for big things. In fact, He has given us the priviledge to ask, seek, and knock.

The problem is not always the size of the request; the problem is that many people are asking for the wrong thing at the wrong time. This is why the Bible warns that “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss.” Praying with the wrong focus can keep a believer spinning in circles indefinitely.

It is entirely possible to pray every single day and still completely miss God’s agenda because your prayers are centered solely on your own desires. Prayer is not about presenting a selfish wish list before the throne; it is about discovering the mind of God and aligning your heart with His will.

There are blessings you are sweating to pursue that will naturally follow you when you first seek what God values. As Jesus said, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). Perhaps your delay is not because God is unwilling to answer, but because He wants to redirect your prayers.

He wants you to ask for the things that will transform your life, strengthen your faith, shape your character, and position you for lasting blessings. When you begin to pray according to God’s heart, you will discover that your secondary needs are seamlessly supplied by His grace.

Today, let us examine our prayers. Are we truly asking God only for what we want, or are we asking for what God desires to give us? Sometimes one right prayer can change the direction of an entire lifetime. This is exactly how many of us approach God in prayer. We come into His presence with a long list of requests.

We ask for money, promotion, marriage, visas, children, houses, cars, and breakthrough. There is nothing wrong with these desires because God wants to bless us. Sometimes, we are asking for what we think we need, while God is waiting for us to ask for something entirely different.

For example, we may be begging for open doors while God is saying, “Ask Me for mercy first.” We may be crying out for deliverance while God is waiting for us to ask for the wisdom needed to walk out of the problem. We may be praying for a spouse while God is waiting for us to change our attitude.

We may be demanding that God attack our enemies, while He is expecting us to ask for a heart of forgiveness, humility, or a deeper relationship with Him. Many believers become discouraged because they feel their prayers are hitting a brick wall. Yet, the problem is rarely God’s willingness to answer.

The problem could be that we have not asked Him the right question. We have been presenting our own agenda to God instead of seeking God’s heart. The Bible says, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss…” This tells us that not every prayer is prayed according to God’s will.

A sincere prayer can still miss God’s purpose if it is not aligned with what He wants to accomplish in our lives. That is why every believer should first seek God’s mind before making any requests. Instead of rushing into prayer with a list of demands, spend time asking the Holy Spirit, “Lord, what should I be praying about? What is Your will concerning this situation? What do You want me to ask for?”

God always knows the root of every problem. We often pray about the symptoms, but God wants to deal with the source. A man may think his greatest problem is unemployment, while God sees pride as the real obstacle. A woman may believe she only needs financial help, while God knows that bitterness has blocked her breakthrough.

Someone may be praying against witches and wizards every day, while God is waiting for that person to repent of his hidden sin, restore a broken relationships, or obey an instruction He has already given. When we begin to pray according to God’s will, our prayers become far more powerful, and we stop wasting time fighting the wrong battles.

We begin to focus on what heaven is focusing on. That is when prayers produce lasting results, because they are no longer driven by our emotions, but by God’s purpose. Before you ask God for another miracle, pause and ask Him one vital question: “Lord, what do You want me to ask for today?”

That single prayer can change the direction of your life, revealing the very issue that has been delaying your breakthrough. When you ask for what God desires, you position yourself to receive what He has already prepared for you. There are times when God is simply waiting for you to change your prayer topic.

There are times when God is waiting for you to ask strategic questions. The Bible says, “And David enquired at the Lord, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all” (1 Samuel 30:8).

There is a great danger in praying without first seeking God’s mind: we can become so consumed by our personal desires that we completely overlook what heaven is trying to accomplish in us. God is interested in blessing you, but He is even more interested in changing you.

Sometimes, before He changes your situation, He wants to change your heart. For example, some may spend years praying for their life partner to die so that they can just remarry, or for a difficult relationship to end, while God is actually waiting for them to deal with their own internal pride and anger issues.

Asking God for the right thing opens doors of true breakthrough. Look at the life of Solomon. When God appeared to him and said, “Ask what I shall give you,” Solomon had a rare opportunity. He could have asked for riches, long life, military power, or the destruction of his enemies.

Instead, he asked for wisdom to lead God’s people. Solomon asked for what pleased the heart of the Father. Because his request aligned with divine purpose, God gave him wisdom and added riches, honor, and peace. When you ask according to God’s will, He will always give you far more than you originally requested.

Think also about King David. After he sinned against God, he did not first pray for his kingdom to be secured. He did not ask that his enemies should be destroyed. He knew his greatest need was forgiveness and restoration. That was why he cried, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

David understood that a restored relationship with God was more valuable than any earthly blessing. Many of us would have prayed differently. If we were in David’s position, we might have spent all night binding enemies and praying against those waiting for us to fall.

Meanwhile, God would still be waiting for us to deal with the real issue inside our hearts. Sometimes the greatest miracle you need may not be a financial breakthrough but a broken and contrite spirit before the Lord. Sometimes the greatest answer to your prayer is not a new opportunity but genuine repentance and confession.

Sometimes, the greatest door God wants to open is not the door of employment, but the door of obedience. The Holy Spirit knows what you truly need before you even open your mouth; He sees tomorrow while we only see today. This is why every believer must learn to completely depend on the Holy Spirit in prayer.

Before presenting your requests, ask Him to guide your prayers. Tell Him, “Holy Spirit, teach me what to pray. Help me to pray according to the will of God.” Many delays in life are not because God has forgotten His children. They issues arise because God is patiently waiting for us to align ourselves with His will.

Heaven is waiting for the right prayer. The moment your prayer agrees with God’s purpose for your life, things can begin to move in the right direction. Divine instructions will come clearly. The wrong doors will close and the right doors will open. Confusion will disappear, and God’s direction will become clearer.

Never forget this truth: God is not only interested in answering your prayers; He wants to answer the right prayers. He is not looking for your drama in prayer. He is looking for hearts that are willing to ask according to His will. Never forget this truth: God is not only interested in answering your prayers;

He wants to answer the right prayers. He is not looking for your drama in prayer. He is looking for hearts that are willing to ask according to His will.  When your desires become His desires, and your prayers reflect His purpose, you will begin to experience answers that no man can stop.

How Do You Know What God Wants You to Ask?

This is an important question every believer should ask. If God expects us to pray according to His will, then how do we discover what He wants us to pray about? The good news is that God does not hide His will from those who sincerely seek Him. He is a loving Father who wants to direct us in life.

The first step is to spend time in God’s presence before presenting your requests. Many of us enter prayer with a prepared prayer list. We pray those prayer points without giving God an opportunity to speak. Prayer is not a one-way conversation. It is a fellowship. ”You talk, I react.”.

Learn to quiet your heart before God. Worship Him. Thank Him. Read His Word. Then ask, “Lord, what should I be praying about today?” You may be surprised by what the Holy Spirit begins to reveal upon your heart.

Secondly, allow the Word of God to shape your prayers. God’s will will never contradict His Word. The more you study the Scriptures, the more you understand the things that are important to God.

The Bible teaches us to pray for wisdom, holiness, forgiveness, boldness, spiritual growth, love, open doors for the gospel, and the salvation of souls.

When your prayer is rooted in God’s Word, you can pray with confidence because you know you are asking according to His will. You will be confident that your prayer will be answered.

Thirdly, pay attention to the conviction of the Holy Spirit. There are moments when you kneel to pray for one thing, but you suddenly feel burdened to pray about something completely different. Do not ignore that leading. Perhaps you intended to pray for your business, but the Holy Spirit keeps reminding you to forgive someone who offended you.

Maybe you wanted to pray for financial increase, but instead you feel led to pray for your children, your spouse, or your spiritual life. Follow that leading. The Holy Spirit knows what is happening in the spiritual realm far better than you do.

Another practical way is to ask God to reveal the root of your problem. For example, instead of saying, “Lord, remove this delay,” you can pray, “Lord, show me why this delay is happening in my life. If there is anything I need to change, reveal it to me.”

That is a humble prayer, and God honours humility. Sometimes He will reveal an area of disobedience. At other times, He will simply encourage you to remain patient because your appointed time has not yet come. Also, do not ignore God’s previous instructions.

Some people are asking God for fresh direction while they have not obeyed the last instruction He gave them. If God told you to reconcile with someone, forgive them. If He told you to stop a sinful habit, obey Him. If He asked you to begin serving Him in a particular area, do not delay.

Obedience often unlocks the next level of God’s blessings. God is not the author of confusion. He does not usually give new instructions to people who refuse to obey the old ones. It is also wise to pray, “Lord, let my desires agree with Your will.” There are times when our personal ambitions are stronger than our desire to please God.

We become determined to have our own way. But a mature believer is willing to surrender every personal desire at the feet of Jesus. Such a person can honestly say, “Father, if what I am asking for is not Your will, help me to accept Your perfect plan.”

The Bible says that God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or think. Notice those words – above all that we ask. This means God already has greater plans than the ones we are praying about. If His plans are greater than our prayers, then it is wise to seek His heart before making our requests.

From today, let your prayer life begin differently. Before you ask for a miracle, ask for His will. Before you ask for provision, ask for His direction. Before you ask God to change your circumstances, ask Him to change you. Before you ask Him to remove every mountain, ask Him what He wants you to learn on the mountain.

Every day, begin your prayer with these simple but powerful words:

“Father, what do You want me to ask You today? Show me what is on Your heart. Let my prayers agree with Your will. I don’t just want answered prayers; I want prayers that please You. Teach me to ask what You have asked me to ask, so that my life will fulfil Your purpose.”

When that becomes your daily prayer, you will no longer pray only from your needs. You will begin to pray from God’s heart. And when your heart and God’s heart begin to agree, your prayers will carry greater power, greater purpose, and greater results.

Remember Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. He prayed with complete honesty, expressing His human feelings before the Father. Yet He ended His prayer by saying, “Nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.” That is the highest level of prayer. It is the prayer of surrender. It is the prayer that trusts God’s wisdom above human understanding.

Finally, make it a habit to ask God this simple question every day: ‘Lord, what is on Your heart today?’ When you begin your prayers this way, you will discover that your fellowship with Him goes deeper. Your prayers will become more focused, and your sensitivity to the Holy Spirit will sharpen. Instead of praying out of fear, you will begin to pray from revelation. Instead of chasing blessings, you will find yourself pursuing the heart of the One who gives them.”

May God teach us not only how to pray, but what to pray. May He open our ears to hear His voice, our hearts to receive His instructions, and our mouths to ask the prayers that move heaven. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Key Lessons for Today

  • God wants you to ask, but He also wants you to ask wisely. The right prayer attracts the right answer.
  • Not every good request is God’s priority for your life at that moment. Seek His will before presenting your desires.
  • Many unanswered prayers are not because God cannot answer, but because we are asking for the wrong things or at the wrong time.
  • When you ask for what pleases God, He often adds the blessings you did not even ask for, just as He did for King Solomon.
  • The Holy Spirit is your greatest prayer guide. Always ask Him to teach you what to pray about before you begin praying.
  • God is more interested in your transformation than your comfort. Sometimes He wants to change you before He changes your situation.
  • Prayer is not only about speaking to God; it is also about listening to Him. A listening heart prays more effectively.
  • Wrong prayers can delay divine answers, but the right prayers can unlock many blessings at once.
  • Never allow your flesh to determine your prayer points. Let the Word of God and the Holy Spirit direct your requests.
  • The greatest prayer you can pray each day is, “Lord, help me to ask what You want me to ask.” That prayer keeps you aligned with God’s perfect will.

Personal Challenge

For the next seven days, begin every prayer with this simple question: “Lord, what do You want me to ask You today?

Do not rush into presenting your requests. Spend a few minutes worshipping God, reading a portion of His Word, and quietly waiting in His presence. Write down any Scripture, conviction, instruction, or burden the Holy Spirit places on your heart.

If God reveals an area where you need to repent, forgive someone, make restitution, or obey a specific instruction, do not postpone it. Act on it immediately. At the end of the seven days, look back at your prayer journal and reflect on how God spoke to you.

You may discover that your greatest breakthrough did not begin with receiving something from God, but with asking the very question He wanted you to ask. Remember, the most powerful prayers are not always the longest prayers—they are the prayers that are aligned with the will of God.

Evangelism Challenge

Today, encourage at least one person to seek God’s will in prayer instead of praying only for personal needs. Share this devotional or tell someone, “Before you ask God for anything, first ask Him, ‘Lord, what do You want me to ask You?'” Your encouragement may help someone discover the prayer that changes their life forever.

Wisdom for Today

The right prayer, prayed according to God’s will, is more powerful than a thousand prayers driven only by human desires. Before asking God to bless your plans, seek to understand His plans for your life. When your heart aligns with His will, His answers will come at the right time and in the right way.

Closing Reflection

God is not looking for people who can simply pray long prayers; He is looking for people who are willing to pray the right prayers. Before you present your needs to Him, ask Him to reveal His heart concerning your situation. The greatest breakthroughs often begin when our prayers agree with God’s perfect will.

As you go through this day, make it your habit to say, “Lord, teach me what to ask.” When your desires are aligned with His purpose, your prayers become more effective, your faith grows stronger, and your life begins to reflect His divine plan. May you never miss God’s best because of wrong priorities or misguided requests. From today, may your prayers attract heaven’s attention and produce lasting testimonies, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
