EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: September 10, 2026 – Overcoming Ancient Gates

Beloved, when we talk about overcoming ancient gates, it is important first to understand what a gate represents. A gate is an entrance or access point into a place.

In ancient times, the gate of a city was very important because it controlled who entered and who went out.

Gates were places of security, authority, judgement, and decision. Therefore, when Scripture uses the language of gates, it speaks of access, authority, restriction, or resistance, something standing between a person and where he is trying to go.

An ancient gate, is a long standing barrier or pattern that has remained for a considerable period and continues to oppose progress. There are battles that did not begin today.

Some have repeated for years, and in certain families the same pattern appears from one generation to another.

You may notice that whenever someone is about to make significant progress, something interrupts it, repeated marital problems, financial struggles, abandoned projects, destructive addictions, or wrong decisions made again and again.

When something has happened repeatedly for many years, people eventually accept it as normal and say, “This is how things are in our family.” But beloved, the fact that something has existed for a long time does not mean it has the authority to remain forever.

Psalm 24:7 says, “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.” Notice that the Bible calls them everlasting doors, yet they are still commanded to lift up their heads.

Something may have stood strong in your life for years, but when the King of glory appears, it must bow. A problem may be older than you, but it is not older than God. A pattern may have existed before you were born, but it is not greater than the power of Jesus Christ.

There are moments when you feel as though you are standing before a gate that refuses to open. You have prayed, prepared, tried, and made genuine effort, yet something keeps saying, “You cannot pass beyond this point.”

Sometimes the resistance is purely spiritual. At other times, the gate may be sin, a curse, a covenant, a wrong decision, fear, procrastination, an unhealthy relationship, circumstances outside your immediate control, or a habit you have confronted.

An ancient gate is a long standing barrier established by the enemy, sometimes generations before a person was born, designed to control, limit, or deny access to what God has ordained for that person’s life.

These gates may be foundational, established through covenants made by ancestors, curses spoken over a family line, or altars raised in a person’s place of origin.

They may also be personal, formed through years of habitual sin, unbroken vows, or long standing agreements with fear and unbelief.

Whatever their origin, ancient gates share one feature: they have stood for so long that people often stop noticing them, mistaking them for normal limitation rather than recognising them as a spiritual structure that must be confronted and taken down.

God did not merely promise Abraham deliverance from his enemies; He promised that Abraham’s seed would possess the gate of his enemies. To possess a gate is to take control of the point of access itself, so that the enemy no longer decides who enters and who is kept out.

This authority was not earned by human strength; it was given through covenant. In the same way, every believer in Christ carries delegated authority to possess the gates that have stood against their family, their finances, their health, or their destiny.

Matthew 16:18 confirms that even the gates of hell shall not prevail against the church, meaning that no gate, however ancient or fortified, is beyond the reach of the authority given to believers in the name of Jesus.

Beloved, the fact that something is old does not make it permanent. A pattern may be ancient, but God is older than the pattern. Isaiah 45:2 says, “I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron.”

God is able to break what appears unbreakable in your life and family. But His method of breaking is not always dramatic. Sometimes He breaks an ancient gate by giving you wisdom your family never had, or courage to say no to a destructive tradition.

Sometimes He breaks it through education, through repentance, through godly counsel, through financial discipline, or through deliverance from a besetting habit.

Sometimes He breaks it by removing you from an unhealthy environment, and sometimes by disappointing you first before revealing something greater. Never limit how God must bring your freedom.

Your victory over ancient gates begins with the presence and lordship of Jesus Christ. Spiritual warfare is not merely about shouting at darkness; it is about submitting every area of your life to the authority of Christ.

When the King of glory enters a life, darkness loses its legal occupation. When Jesus rules a home, ungodly patterns begin to break.

Some gates do not exist around you; they exist in your mind. A person told repeatedly, “You can never succeed,” “Nobody in this family goes far,” or “You are just like your father or mother,” begins to live according to those words until they become a gate keeping him from his inheritance.

Romans 12:2 tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. This is why you must never spend all your time asking only, “Who is fighting me?” You must also ask, “What must change in me?”

This is why one of the most important prayers you can pray is, “Lord, show me whether there is anything I am doing wrong that is helping this gate to remain.”

That prayer requires humility, because God may show you that you need to forgive someone, acquire a skill, leave an unhealthy environment, seek counsel, or simply stop procrastinating.

There are battles that require serious spiritual warfare, but there are also patterns that require repentance, discipline, and a different way of living. If everyone before you handled money carelessly, you can learn financial discipline.

If marriages in your family have repeatedly failed, you can learn communication, patience, and responsibility.

You may not be responsible for how a destructive pattern started, but you can become responsible for refusing to continue it.

Proverbs 23:7 says, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” You cannot consistently think like a defeated person and expect to live boldly.

Sometimes people want God to destroy a gate that their own behaviour keeps rebuilding. You cannot continually practise dishonesty and pray for the right people to locate you.

You cannot continually destroy relationships through uncontrolled anger and pray for a peaceful home.

There are battles we must pray about, and there are behaviours we must repent from. Acts 3:19 says, “Repent ye therefore, and be converted.”

If you discover that your own choices are contributing to the problem, do not defend yourself. Repent, and ask God to renew your mind.

Spiritual warfare must never become an excuse for accusing people without evidence. Someone appearing in a dream does not prove that the person is responsible for your problem.

Fight the battle spiritually without creating physical enemies unnecessarily. James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Notice the order: submit to God first, and then resist the devil.

One of the greatest mistakes a believer can make is to magnify the gate above the King of glory. In Psalm 24, the gate is not presented as equal to God; it receives a command, “Lift up your heads,” because the King of glory is coming.

Never become so conscious of ancestral powers, curses, and spiritual attacks that you grow less conscious of Jesus Christ. The Christian faith is not built around the greatness of the enemy; it is built around the victory and lordship of Jesus Christ.

Colossians 2:15 tells us that Christ spoiled principalities and powers and triumphed over them openly. You are not praying as though Jesus and the devil are two equal powers struggling for supremacy.

Jesus Christ is Lord, and the cross has already declared His victory. There are also ancient gates that will only fall when someone decides to live differently from those who came before them.

Perhaps everyone before you gave up when things became difficult; you must develop perseverance. Perhaps people in your family avoided difficult conversations until relationships collapsed; you can decide to communicate with courage instead.

Breaking an ancient pattern often requires becoming the first person willing to establish a new one. Caleb is an excellent example of this.

Numbers 14:24 says that Caleb had “another spirit.” While others saw giants and concluded that victory was impossible, Caleb looked at the same situation and trusted God for possession.

Sometimes what your family needs is somebody with another spirit, somebody who refuses corruption, values integrity, takes learning seriously, breaks the cycle of addiction, and prays, thinks, and lives differently from everyone who came before. You can become that person today.

And when the gate finally opens, you must be willing to move. Some people spend years praying for an opportunity, but when it arrives, fear keeps them standing outside asking, “What if I fail? What if I am disappointed again?”

Micah 2:13 says, “The breaker is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate.” They did not merely celebrate that the gate was broken; they passed through it. When God gives you a legitimate opportunity, prepare yourself and move.

Finally, do not rebuild what God has already destroyed on your behalf. If you have escaped an unhealthy relationship, do not return to it out of loneliness.

If you have overcome reckless spending, do not return to it when your income increases. If God has delivered you from an addiction, do not deliberately return to the environments that once fed it.

Galatians 5:1 says, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.” Freedom must be guarded with wisdom, or it will not last.

Beloved, an ancient gate may take the form of spiritual opposition, a destructive family pattern, a wrong belief, or a deeply established obstacle. Whatever form it takes, do not accept it simply because it has existed for many years.

A gate may be ancient, but it is not eternal; only God is eternal. Pray against every strong opposition, but also examine your own life honestly.

Ask God to reveal what you need to stop, what you need to learn, what you need to confront, and what step you need to take next.

Refuse to spend your life discussing who built the gate; concentrate instead on overcoming it. Never allow yesterday’s history to become tomorrow’s prophecy.

If a destructive pattern has existed for generations in your family, somebody must eventually stand up and say, “It stops here.” By the grace of God, that person can be you.

Consider Israel at Jericho. The wall around that city had stood for generations, and no army in that land had ever brought it down by ordinary means. Yet God did not tell Joshua to study the wall’s history or measure its thickness.

He told him to march, to obey, and to shout, and the wall that seemed permanent fell in a single day. There are gates in your life that look exactly like the wall of Jericho, ancient, thick, and undefeated, but they are waiting for a generation that will simply obey God’s instruction rather than negotiate with their fear.

Your obedience today may be the shout that finally brings down what your family has walked around for years. Psalm 24:7 still declares, “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.”

Therefore, rise in faith. Resist the devil. Submit yourself fully to God. Walk in wisdom, take responsible steps, and believe that whatever ancient gate is standing against the purpose of God for your life must give way before the King of glory, in Jesus’ name.

 

WISDOM FOR TODAY

An old gate does not fall because it is pushed once; it falls because pressure is applied consistently until its hinges give way. The believer who confronts an ancient gate with one prayer and gives up has not yet begun the real battle; it is sustained faith and persistent authority that finally bring it down.

 

PERSONAL CHALLENGE

Today, identify one long standing limitation in your life or family line that you have never directly confronted in prayer. Name it specifically before God and begin a season of consistent prayer against it until it gives way.

 

EVANGELISM CHALLENGE

Share with someone today that no barrier in their life, however old, is beyond the reach of God’s power, and lead them to pray a simple prayer of authority over whatever ancient gate they may be facing.

74. O Lord, send Your angels ahead of me and clear every obstruction from my path.

93. Every evil lock placed upon my womb, hands, mind and destiny, break by the power of the Holy Spirit.

44. Father, let every gate of hell that has tried to prevail against my family finally be silenced forever, in Jesus name.

45. O Lord, establish my life so firmly that no gate, ancient or new, shall ever again hold sway over me, in Jesus name.

46. I thank You, Father, that You who started this work of tearing down gates will surely complete it, in Jesus name.

47. O Lord, let every gate assigned to hinder my prayers from reaching Your throne be broken, in Jesus name.

48. Father, let every ancient gate standing against my spouse or spouse to be also give way tonight, in Jesus name.

49. I decree that every gate of confusion clouding my family’s decisions is lifted while we rest, in Jesus name.

51. Every stronghold built to replace a gate I have already broken, be destroyed before it is completed, in Jesus name.

52. Father, let angels roll away every stone the enemy places at the gate of my breakthrough tonight, in Jesus name.
