TOPIC: PRAYER IS STILL THE KEY

OPENING SCRIPTURES

Luke 18:1 (KJV)
“And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;”

James 5:16–18 (KJV)
“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.”

Jeremiah 33:3 (KJV):

“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”

Matthew 16:19 (KJV)
“And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Prayer Is Still The Key – EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: October 17, 2026

Prayer is very important in the life of a believer. It is our line of communication with God. Through prayer, we speak to our Father, and He speaks to us. Whatever you need, prayer is the channel through which you bring it before the throne of grace.

Hebrews 4:16 invites us: “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

When you pray in the name of Jesus, your request does not fall to the ground; it is carried into the presence of God, and the Holy Spirit Himself helps you to pray as you ought (Romans 8:26).

Never underestimate the power of prayer. It is not prayer itself that conquers, but the God we call upon in prayer, and with Him all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).

Through prayer, Joshua commanded the sun to stand still. Through prayer, Elijah shut the heavens and opened them again. Through prayer, Hezekiah received fifteen more years. Through prayer, the early church saw Peter walk out of prison. Prayer moves the hand that moves the world.

If you want to get your life right, prayer is the key. If you want a godly marriage, prayer is the key. If you want your children to walk in the fear of the Lord, prayer is the key.

If you want to be financially stable, prayer is the key, joined with diligence, wisdom and good stewardship. If you want to fulfil your destiny, prayer is the key.

Prayer also secures you in the day of danger. Psalm 50:15 says, “And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.”

Many have been delivered from accidents, attacks and calamities they never even knew about, simply because they or someone else prayed.

The arrows that missed you, the plans that failed against you, and the dangers you passed through unharmed are testimonies of a prayer altar at work.

But a man who loses his zeal for prayer is gradually sliding toward a pit. He may not fall in one day, but every day without prayer weakens his spiritual walls a little more.

Samson did not lose his strength in a moment; he slowly drifted from his consecration until the day the Philistines came upon him and “he wist not that the LORD was departed from him” (Judges 16:20).

Prayerlessness does not announce itself. It quietly drains a man until he finds himself powerless in the hour he needs strength most.

Beloved, it is possible to look at the number of unresolved challenges in your life and begin to feel that prayer is not the key. You have prayed, fasted and believed, yet some situations remain the same.

Hear this clearly: the fact that God has not yet answered a particular prayer does not mean prayer is not the key, and it does not mean God cannot handle your situation.

“Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27). Take a moment and check your life carefully. Look back over the years.

God has answered many other prayers in your life. The job you once prayed for, the sickness you once cried about, the danger you once feared, the door you once begged God to open: many of these became testimonies.

Sometimes the pain of one unanswered prayer makes us forget the many that were answered. David said, “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits” (Psalm 103:2).

And know this: even as you are reading this devotional, God is answering prayers. Somewhere, someone has just received a testimony. A mother has just heard good news about her child.

A man has just received a call he has waited for. A sick person has just felt relief. The God who answered them is the same God who hears you. Your turn is not cancelled; it is coming in His time.

Beloved, there is no location on earth, and no depth of trouble, where prayer cannot reach the ear of God. Jonah was in the belly of a great fish, at the bottom of the sea, swallowed by the consequences of his own disobedience.

No ambulance could reach him there. No friend could find him there. But Scripture says, “Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly” (Jonah 2:1). And the God who heard him “spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land” (Jonah 2:10).

If prayer could travel from the belly of a fish to the throne of heaven, it can travel from the hospital bed, the prison cell, the empty kitchen, the broken home and your place of confusion.

Isaiah 59:1 declares, “Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear.” Even at the last moment of life, prayer still works. The thief on the cross had only a few hours left, and no good works to show.

But he prayed one short prayer: “Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.” And Jesus answered, “To day shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:42–43). It is never too late to call upon the Lord. As long as there is breath in your body, prayer is still the key.

Some people treat prayer like a vending machine: insert a request, collect an answer, and walk away until the next need arises. But prayer is not a transaction; it is a relationship.

God is not only a Provider; He is a Father. He does not only want to hear your list of needs; He wants your heart. Jesus taught us to begin prayer with “Our Father which art in heaven” (Matthew 6:9).

Before He taught us to ask for daily bread, He taught us to honour the Father’s name, desire His kingdom and submit to His will. Prayer that flows from relationship carries a confidence that transactional prayer can never have.

When you walk with God daily, you do not need to introduce yourself to Him in your day of trouble. He already knows your voice. Enoch walked with God until God took him (Genesis 5:24).

Moses spoke with God face to face, as a man speaks to his friend (Exodus 33:11). The goal of prayer is not only to receive from God, but to know Him. And those who know their God shall be strong and do exploits (Daniel 11:32).

Jesus said, “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them” (Mark 11:24).

Faith is not shouting louder or forcing emotions. Faith is trusting the character and promises of God even before you see the answer. When you pray, pray as one who is speaking to a Father who loves, a King who is able, and a God who keeps His word.

Some people pray, and immediately after praying, they speak words that cancel their prayers. They pray for healing and then declare, “This sickness will kill me.” They pray for provision and then say, “Nothing ever works for me.”

Beloved, let your mouth agree with your prayer. After you have prayed, begin to thank God for the answer. Let your confession line up with your petition.

Beloved, God has placed the key in your hand. Do not leave it in your pocket. Do not hand it over to someone else and walk away. Do not throw it away because one door has not yet opened.

Pastors can pray for you, prophets can pray for you, and prayer partners can stand with you, and you should value their prayers. But there are doors in your life that God is waiting for you to knock on.

There are battles in your family that God has assigned to your altar. There are blessings that will only come when you rise up and call upon His name. Whatever you are facing, the door is not stronger than the key.

The mountain is not greater than God. The battle is not bigger than the One who hears you. Prayer is still the key. Pick it up today, turn it in faith, and watch God open the doors that have been locked against your life.

Beloved, prayer is not a one way conversation. Many people speak to God for an hour and never wait one minute to hear Him. They present their requests, say “Amen,” and rush away. But true prayer includes listening.

The prophet Habakkuk said, “I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me” (Habakkuk 2:1). He prayed, and then he positioned himself to hear.

When the young Samuel learned to recognise the voice of God, he said, “Speak; for thy servant heareth” (1 Samuel 3:10). From that night, God began to reveal Himself to him, and none of his words fell to the ground.

When the Amalekites burnt Ziklag and carried away the wives and children of David and his men, David did not rush into battle in anger.

“David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all” (1 Samuel 30:8). David prayed, David listened, David obeyed, and David recovered all.

Beloved, after you pray, be still. Open your Bible. Wait in His presence. Pay attention to the peace or the unrest in your spirit. Sometimes the answer to your prayer is not a thing you receive but an instruction you hear.

“They that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31).

Cornelius was a devout man who prayed to God always. One day an angel appeared to him and said, “Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God” (Acts 10:4).

Heaven had been keeping a record of his prayers. At the appointed time, God sent Peter to his house, and salvation and the Holy Ghost fell upon his entire household.

Beloved, your prayers are not lost in the air. Every sincere prayer you have prayed has been recorded in heaven.

Revelation 8:3–5 shows us a glorious picture: an angel stands at the golden altar before the throne, offering incense “with the prayers of all saints.” Then “the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.”

Your prayers are rising like incense before God, and at the appointed time, heaven will pour fire back into your situation.

The tears you cried, the nights you prayed, the fasts you observed and the words you whispered in pain are all stored before God. They are not wasted. They are waiting for their appointed time.

Beloved, no matter how advanced the world becomes, no matter how much knowledge people acquire, and no matter how many resources are available to humanity, prayer is still the key.

We live in a generation that is becoming more and more dependent on money, technology, connections, qualifications and personal ability. These things are useful, and God can bless us through them, but none of them must ever replace our dependence on Him.

Jeremiah 17:5 warns, “Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm.” Human strength has limits. Connections can fail. Money can lose value. Technology can crash. But the God who hears prayer never fails.

Times and seasons have changed. Methods and systems have changed. But heaven has not changed its key. The God of Elijah still answer prayers. The God who opened prison doors for Peter still opens doors today. Today, the Lord is calling you back to your altar. Pick up the key again, and watch that locked doors begin to open.

A key is a small object, but it has power and carries great authority. A man may stand in front of his own house, his own car or his own office, and still be locked out because he does not have the key.

Jesus said, “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:19).

God has given His children keys of authority, and prayer is the hand that turns them for open doors. Through prayer, we bind the works of darkness, loose the blessings of heaven, open the doors that men have shut, and close doors that the enemy has opened.

Many believers are standing outside their own blessings. James 4:2 says, “ye have not, because ye ask not.” God is not a stingy Father; He is waiting for His children to ask.

Jesus gave us three levels of prayer, each with a promise: ask, and it shall be given; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened.

Prayer is still the key because it keeps us dependent on God. Through prayer we express our needs, confess our sins, give thanks and seek wisdom. Through prayer we receive strength to obey Him and peace to face what we cannot immediately change.

Prayer is not merely a religious exercise; it is the lifeline between a child and his Father. Some people remember prayer only when they are in serious trouble. When business is booming, they stop praying. When the marriage is peaceful, they neglect their relationship with God.

When money is available, they become too busy to seek His face. But the moment problems arise, they begin to search for someone to pray for them.

God warned Israel about this very danger: when you have eaten and are full, when your houses are built and your silver and gold are multiplied, “Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God” (Deuteronomy 8:14).

Comfort has a way of quietly cooling the altar. King Uzziah is a sober example. Scripture says that “as long as he sought the LORD, God made him to prosper” (2 Chronicles 26:5).

But when he became strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction. His seeking produced his prosperity, and his pride ended it.

Beloved, prayer should never be the emergency exit you use only when every other door has failed. It should be the front door through which you walk every day. The best time to pray is not only in the storm; it is also in the sunshine.

Those who pray in peace are prepared for the battles that come later. Prayer is more than asking God to change a situation. It also opens your heart to His correction and guidance.

Prayer may not always change your circumstances immediately, but it changes you while you wait. It strengthens your faith, calms your emotions, corrects your motives and gives you grace to endure.

Philippians 4:6–7 promises that when we bring everything to God in prayer with thanksgiving, “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds.”

Notice that the first answer God promises is not the change of the situation but the guarding of your heart. Before He moves the mountain, He strengthens the climber.

Sometimes God changes the situation. At other times, He changes your perspective and gives you wisdom to respond differently. Paul prayed three times for his thorn to be removed.

God answered, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). That too was an answer. The thorn remained, but the power of Christ rested upon him.

We come to God as our Father, trusting His love even when we do not understand His timing. A child may not understand every decision of a good father, but he trusts the heart behind it.

Before making an important decision, pray. Before entering a relationship, pray. Before accepting an offer, signing an agreement, starting a business or travelling, pray. Prayer may reveal what excitement, pressure or human opinion prevents you from seeing.

Proverbs 3:6 says, “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Many costly mistakes could have been avoided if people had learned to seek God before acting. It is easier to receive direction before entering a problem than to beg for deliverance after entering it.

Even Jesus, before choosing His twelve apostles, “went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God” (Luke 6:12). If the Son of God prayed through the night before an important decision, how much more do we need to pray before ours?

Israel, on the other hand, entered a covenant with the deceiving Gibeonites because they “asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD” (Joshua 9:14). One prayerless agreement bound them for generations. Make prayer your first step, not your last resort.

Prayer is also a weapon in spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that “we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world.”

There are battles that intelligence, money and human connections alone cannot resolve. They require spiritual authority, the Word of God and persistent prayer. Jesus said of a stubborn spirit, “This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:29).

When Herod arrested Peter and planned to bring him out to the people after the Passover, every human door of escape was shut. Peter was bound with two chains, sleeping between two soldiers, with guards at the door.

But Acts 12:5 says, “Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.” While the church prayed, God sent an angel. The chains fell from Peter’s hands, the iron gate opened of its own accord, and Peter walked out of a situation that appeared impossible.

At midnight, Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises in the inner prison, “And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed” (Acts 16:26).

Prayer can open doors, break chains and frustrate the plans of darkness. It can bring deliverance, protection, restoration and divine intervention. Yet hear this balance: our confidence must always be in God, not in the volume of our voices or the length of our prayers.

The prophets of Baal cried aloud and cut themselves from morning till evening, but there was no answer. Elijah prayed a short, simple prayer, and fire fell (1 Kings 18:26–38).

Jesus said, “use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking” (Matthew 6:7). Power in prayer does not come from noise but from the God we are calling upon.

Some people have become discouraged because they prayed and have not yet seen the answer they expected. Beloved, delay does not always mean denial. God may be working in ways you cannot presently see. Keep praying, and keep listening for His instruction.

Daniel prayed, and the answer was released from the first day, yet spiritual resistance delayed its arrival for twenty one days (Daniel 10:12–13).

Hannah prayed for years before Samuel was born. Elijah prayed seven times on Mount Carmel; six times his servant returned saying there was nothing, but at the seventh time a cloud the size of a man’s hand appeared (1 Kings 18:43–44). Many people stop at the sixth time.

Perhaps you have prayed about employment, marriage, provision or a difficult family situation for a long time. You may feel tired of mentioning the same concern to God. Bring that weariness to Him too. He is not irritated by your returning.

Persistence is not a way of forcing God to follow our timetable, and it does not mean God is unwilling to help. Persistence is an expression of trust. It is faith that refuses to surrender to discouragement.

Jesus told the parable of the persistent widow “to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint” (Luke 18:1). Prayer keeps hope alive while you wait for God’s timing.

Prayer is not a tool for forcing God to approve everything we desire. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed, “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42).

You may ask for something that looks good, yet God sees dangers that are hidden from you. If He closes a door, ask for understanding instead of immediately concluding that prayer has failed.

Sometimes God answers by giving what you requested. At other times, He protects you by withholding it. A “no” from God is often a shield over your destiny.

Boldness and surrender are not enemies. We pray with fire, we bind and loose with authority, and yet we bow our hearts to the will of the Father. That is the prayer that heaven honours.

Prayer must be accompanied by obedience. You cannot sincerely ask God for financial stability while continuing in uncontrolled spending. You cannot pray for a healthy marriage while refusing to communicate, forgive or behave responsibly.

You cannot pray for success in an examination while neglecting your studies. When enemies conspired against the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s wall, Nehemiah said, “Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night” (Nehemiah 4:9).

He prayed, and he set a watch. Prayer is not a substitute for responsibility; it is the power that strengthens responsibility. Keep seeking God while remaining open to the direction He provides.  When it comes, obey it.

You do not need impressive language before God will hear you. Speak sincerely about your fears, disappointments, needs and hopes. Psalm 62:8 says, “Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us.”

Hannah poured out her soul before the Lord in deep distress (1 Samuel 1). Her lips moved, but her voice was not heard, and Eli thought she was drunk. God did not require her to hide her pain behind polished words. He heard the cry of her heart, and He answered.

Allow your prayer to include repentance. Sin weakens a person’s prayer life. “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me” (Psalm 66:18). This does not mean you must become perfect before approaching God.

It means you must come honestly, confess your sins and turn away from deliberate disobedience. If you have wronged someone, confess it and take appropriate steps to make amends. A sincere prayer life should shape your daily conduct.

Guard against unforgiveness. Jesus taught that when we stand praying, we must forgive (Mark 11:25). Bitterness distracts the heart and turns prayer into a place of accusation rather than communion with God. Release vengeance to God and ask Him to heal your wounds.

And remember, your prayer life does not have to sound like another person’s prayer life. Some pray loudly, while others pray quietly. Some pray for long periods, while others pray briefly but sincerely. God looks at the faith, honesty and condition of the heart.

Jesus made prayer His lifestyle. “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed” (Mark 1:35).

Daniel prayed three times a day, and when a decree was signed against prayer, he still “kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime” (Daniel 6:10).

His habit of prayer took him into the lions’ den and brought him out untouched. Build a consistent prayer routine. Choose a suitable time and place to pray. Consistency is more important than waiting until you feel spiritually excited.

David said, “Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice” (Psalm 55:17). Pray in the morning before the pressures of the day begin.

Pray during the day when you need wisdom. Pray at night before you sleep. Pray with your family. Pray for your children, your marriage, your ministry, your community and your nation.

Keep a record of your prayer requests and the answers you receive. Writing them down strengthens your faith and reminds you of God’s faithfulness. You may discover that some prayers were answered differently from what you expected, yet the answer eventually worked for your good.

Intercede for others. “And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before” (Job 42:10).

The person you pray for may never know the battles your prayers helped them overcome, but heaven records every sincere act of intercession. God is still searching for those who will “stand in the gap” (Ezekiel 22:30) for their families, churches and nation.

It is good for others to pray for you, but you must also build your own altar. A borrowed altar cannot sustain a lifetime destiny.

Beloved, refuse to allow disappointment to silence your prayer life. The enemy understands that a prayerless believer becomes spiritually weak, easily discouraged and vulnerable to deception.

In Gethsemane, Jesus told His sleeping disciples, “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). Peter slept when he should have prayed, and within hours he denied his Lord.

Even when you feel tired, whisper the name of Jesus and ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen you.

Romans 8:26 assures us that “the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” When you do not have the words, He prays through you.

God has promised us in His word, “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11).

A prayer built on the Word carries the weight of the Word. When you pray for healing, stand on His promises of healing. When you pray for provision, stand on His promises of provision.

When you pray for protection, declare Psalm 91. The enemy can argue with your feelings, but he cannot overturn the written Word of God. Jesus Himself defeated Satan in the wilderness with three words: “It is written” (Matthew 4:4–10).

1 John 5:14–15 gives us this confidence: “if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” The surest way to know you are praying according to His will is to pray according to His Word.

Jude 1:20 says, “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.” The Holy Spirit is not only the One who helps us when we do not know what to pray; He is also the One who builds us up as we pray.

Praying in the Spirit strengthens your inner man, sharpens your sensitivity to God, and enables you to pray beyond the limits of your understanding. Paul said, “I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also” (1 Corinthians 14:15).

Both are needed. Pray with your understanding when you know what to say, and yield to the Holy Spirit when words fail you. A believer who prays in the Holy Ghost will not remain spiritually weak for long.

PERSONAL CHALLENGE

For the next seven days, set a fixed time and place for prayer and keep it without fail. Start a prayer journal: write down three specific requests and record how God responds over the coming weeks. Before you pray each day, forgive anyone you are holding in your heart. Then identify one area where you have been praying without acting, and take one practical step of obedience today.

EVANGELISM CHALLENGE

Reach out to someone who is going through a difficult season and offer to pray with them today, by phone, message or in person. After praying, share the good news that Jesus Christ has opened the way to the Father, and that “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).

CLOSING REFLECTION

Beloved, your situation may appear complicated, but it is not beyond God’s knowledge. Your battle may have lasted for years, but God’s power has not reduced. The same key that opened the prison for Peter, shook the foundations for Paul and Silas, brought rain at Elijah’s word, gave Hannah a son, and turned the captivity of Job is in your hand today.

Do not leave it in your pocket. Do not wait for a crisis to use it. Do not hand it to someone else. Call upon Him again. Pray with faith, act with wisdom, and trust Him with the outcome.

Prayer is still the key. Use it daily, and you will see doors open that no man can shut.

If you have any dreams, please don't hesitate to share it with me on my Youtube. I will be happy to proffer solutions to your dream requests.
