When The Way Is Blocked
OPENING SCRIPTURES
Exodus 14:13–16 (KJV): “And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward: But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.”
Isaiah 43:19 (KJV): “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.”
Revelation 3:7–8 (KJV): “These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it.”
MEMORY VERSE
Isaiah 45:2 (KJV): “I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron.”

EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: September 14, 2026 – When The Way Is Blocked
Have you ever reached a point in your life where it seemed there was nowhere else to go? You prayed, tried different options, spoke with people, made plans and waited patiently, yet nothing changed. Every direction appeared blocked.
The opportunity you expected did not come. The person you thought would help you disappointed you. The application was rejected. The money you needed was unavailable.
The relationship did not work out, and the business refused to move forward. You looked ahead and could not see any way out.
Beloved, a blocked way is painful because you may know where you want to go but cannot see how to get there. Repeated disappointment can make you question your ability, your prayers, your calling and even the presence of God.
You may begin to wonder whether you made a wrong decision, whether the enemy is resisting you, or whether God has forgotten you.
But hear the Word of the Lord: a blocked road does not mean your journey has ended. Sometimes God opens the road. Sometimes He shows you another road.
Sometimes He asks you to wait. Sometimes He gives you wisdom to deal with what stands in your way, and sometimes He gives you authority to confront it.
Today we are learning how to respond wisely when the way ahead suddenly closes, and how to discern whether a closed door is resistance from darkness or redirection from heaven.
The children of Israel faced a terrifying blockage in Exodus 14. The Red Sea stood before them, mountains surrounded them, and Pharaoh’s army pursued them from behind.
They had no visible route of escape. Going forward seemed impossible, and going back meant returning to bondage.
The people became afraid and blamed Moses, asking why he had brought them out of Egypt to die in the wilderness. Their reaction reveals what pressure can do to the human heart.
When people cannot see a way forward, they may begin to regret the steps of faith they once celebrated. They may even prefer familiar bondage to an unfamiliar journey of faith.
Moses answered them in Exodus 14:13: “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD.” Then God gave the instruction: “Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward” (Exodus 14:15).
He told Moses to stretch out his rod over the sea, and the sea that looked like an impossible barrier became a pathway.
Notice that the command to move came before the sea opened. God was teaching them that faith must be willing to obey before the whole road becomes visible. Israel saw water; God saw a highway.
Israel saw Pharaoh approaching; God saw the final chapter of Pharaoh’s oppression. Israel saw nowhere to go; God said, “Go forward.”
Beloved, never conclude that there is no solution simply because you cannot presently see one. Your knowledge is limited; God’s wisdom is not.
God does not need an existing road to take you to your destination, because He can create one. Isaiah 43:19 declares, “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?
I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.” Where human wisdom sees an ending, God may be preparing a new beginning.
Wisdom requires that we do not give the same explanation or treatment to every blocked way. Not every closed door is a spiritual attack, and not every obstacle is natural.
The door may be closed by circumstances, by your own decisions, by God Himself, or by the enemy. Each one requires a different response.
An economic crisis may affect your business. Someone may refuse to cooperate with you. You may grow weary and need to rest.
These are genuine circumstances that interrupt our plans, and they call for patience, wisdom and trust in God’s sovereignty. Poor planning can block progress, and lack of preparation can cost opportunities.
Pride can prevent us from receiving useful counsel, disobedience to God’s voice can lead us down the wrong path, and anger can destroy relationships God arranged for our lifting.
In situations like these, prayer is important, but prayer must be accompanied by correction. Sometimes the way is blocked because God is standing in it.
Balaam was on his way to curse Israel when “the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary against him” (Numbers 22:22). That was not satanic resistance; it was divine intervention stopping a man walking toward disaster.
Paul experienced the same thing in Acts 16:6–10. He and his companions were “forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia.” They tried Bithynia, “but the Spirit suffered them not.” These were not failures.
God was closing lesser doors until Paul received the Macedonian vision and carried the gospel into Europe. The closed direction did not end Paul’s ministry; it redirected it.
God may end a relationship early because He knows how it would end. He may delay a journey because something is not ready, or stop a business deal because the people involved are dishonest.
He may close one job because another assignment is connected to your purpose. A closed door can be an act of divine mercy. When God blocks a road, do not use prayer to force it open by fire.
Ask Him for understanding and surrender your desire to His wisdom. The disappointment may hurt today, but one day you may thank God for refusing what you once desperately wanted.
Some blockages are genuine resistance from the enemy against the purpose of God. When you have prayed, sought God, and are convinced that He has directed you, do not abandon His instruction because resistance appears.
Stand upon Isaiah 54:17: “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper.” Confess Isaiah 43:16: “Thus saith the LORD, which maketh a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters.”
The God who made a way through the sea is well able to make a way through your impossible situation.
So before you spend all your energy fighting a closed door, first ask God whether that door was ever meant to open for you.
There are doors that prayer alone will not prepare you to enter. If an opportunity requires a qualification, you may need to acquire it. If your business is losing customers because of poor service, improve the service.
If people keep pointing to your attitude, address it. If your applications keep being rejected because your CV is weak, strengthen your CV.
If poor communication is damaging your relationships, ask God for the grace to listen and speak with wisdom.
If poor financial decisions are causing hardship, learn financial discipline. Hosea 4:6 warns, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”
What appears to be an enemy blocking your way may actually be an area where you need knowledge, preparation, improvement or maturity.
This does not make prayer unnecessary. Prayer brings the wisdom, direction, faith and courage you need to take the right steps.
Nehemiah 4:9 gives us the balance: “Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night.”
They prayed, and they also acted. Pray against opposition, but also prepare for opportunity. Ask yourself honestly, “What part of this blockage is within my responsibility to address?”
Perhaps you need better information, or an important document is missing. Perhaps you need to change your company, apologise, repay a debt, complete your training, arrive earlier, save money or change your approach. True prayer produces clarity and responsible action.
Sometimes the greatest blockage is no longer outside the person; it has entered the person’s heart and thinking.
God may have opened the door, yet fear keeps you from walking through it. Israel reached the border of the Promised Land, but ten spies magnified the giants and discouraged the people.
The land was available, yet unbelief kept an entire generation from possessing it. Fear can make an open road look blocked.
You may have the opportunity but lack the courage to act, a good idea but fear criticism, or the qualification but fear rejection.
You may know exactly what God is asking of you and keep postponing your obedience. In such cases the real barrier is hiding in your heart.
2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
You do not need to feel completely fearless before you act. Courage is obeying God even when your emotions are uncomfortable.
After repeated disappointment, people become afraid to hope again. They reject opportunities before opportunities can reject them. They see every person as wicked because of past hurt.
They stop praying with expectation, stop doing good, stop meeting people, stop learning and stop trying. Proverbs 24:16 declares, “For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again.”
You may have been disappointed, but rise again. You may have lost money, but find the cause and pray. You may have been rejected many times, but never reject yourself or let rejection redefine who you are in Christ.
The people around you may weaken your faith, distract your focus and discourage every attempt at progress. Proverbs 13:20 says, “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”
Your associations can move you forward or keep you circling the same mountain. This does not mean abandoning people merely because they disagree with you, since wise correction can save you from serious mistakes.
But when a relationship continually pushes you toward sin, laziness, confusion and compromise, set godly boundaries, and ask the Holy Spirit to connect you with people who will strengthen your purpose.
A wounded heart resists new relationships, new opportunities and new beginnings. Bitterness keeps you tied to the painful event.
Hebrews 12:15 warns us “lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.”
Forgiveness does not excuse wrongdoing or remove necessary boundaries, but it releases your heart from the control of the offender.
Sometimes the way remains blocked because the appointed time has not arrived.
Habakkuk 2:3 says, “For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.”
We live in a generation that wants everything immediately, but some doors require preparation before they open. Joseph dreamed of greatness when he was young, yet he passed through betrayal, slavery and prison before he entered the palace.
The prison looked like a blocked road, but God was building the wisdom and character Joseph needed to govern Egypt.
David was anointed king but did not sit on the throne immediately. Abraham waited years for some promises. Delay is painful, but delay is not denial.
Your waiting season must never become a wasted season. Keep praying, learning, growing and serving faithfully. Build the capacity required for the place you desire to enter, so that when the door opens, it finds you prepared.
When the way is blocked, desperation can push people through wrong doors. A person desperate to marry may enter the wrong relationship. Someone desperate for money may walk into a dangerous deal.
Someone desperate to travel may take illegal shortcuts. A minister desperate for growth may begin manipulating people through giving.
Desperation has led many into fraud, ungodly relationships, false prophets and occult practices.
The devil tempted Jesus to turn stones into bread and offered Him the kingdoms of the world if He would worship him. Satan still offers routes that look quicker but demand disobedience.
A shortcut outside God’s will becomes a longer journey into regret, and it can create a problem greater than the delay you were trying to escape.
Psalm 37:7 says, “Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him.” Waiting on God does not mean doing nothing; it means refusing to compromise while doing what wisdom requires. What God gives will never require you to abandon Him in order to possess it.
Guard your heart also against comparison. You may watch people younger than you getting married, travelling, buying houses, receiving promotions or growing ministries, and begin asking, “God, what is wrong with me?”
Galatians 6:4 says, “But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.”
You do not know the full journey, sacrifices or struggles behind their testimony. Let it encourage you, not torment you, and concentrate on what God has placed before you.
Many people remain in the same situation for years because they keep applying the same solution to the same problem. When one method fails repeatedly, cry to God for a new strategy.
David enquired of the Lord before his battles. In 2 Samuel 5:19 he asked whether to go against the Philistines, and God said, “Go up.”
When the Philistines returned, David enquired again, and this time the instruction changed: “Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them” (2 Samuel 5:23).
The enemy was the same, but the strategy was different. Yesterday’s strategy may not solve today’s problem, and the counsel that helped you five years ago may not be the counsel you need now.
At Jericho, Israel did not break the wall by human strength. God gave Joshua an unusual instruction to march around the city and then shout, and when they obeyed, the walls collapsed (Joshua 6).
Your breakthrough may be tied to an instruction that looks simple or strange. God may ask you to forgive, give, wait, move, speak, stay silent or begin again. Victory comes when you obey what He says.
This is also where wise persistence matters. Jesus said in Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
Persistence does not mean repeating the same mistake indefinitely. It means learning, adjusting, and continuing to ask, seek and knock.
Remain flexible about the method while staying faithful to the purpose. You may have assumed God would answer through a particular person, company, business idea or country.
When that channel closes, it can feel as if everything has ended, but God is not limited to the method you imagined.
Elijah was fed by ravens at the brook Cherith. When the brook dried up, God had already prepared a widow in Zarephath to sustain him (1 Kings 17).
The dried brook did not mean God had abandoned Elijah; it meant the season and method of provision were changing. Never make a human channel your source.
God may change the vessel while remaining faithful to His promise. Pray for what you desire, but if a door refuses to open, commit it to God’s wisdom. Trust God more than you trust the method.
Pride makes people suffer unnecessarily. Moses could not carry Israel alone, and his father-in-law Jethro counselled him to share the burden (Exodus 18).
Proverbs 15:22 says, “Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.”
You may need a pastor, mentor, doctor, lawyer, financial adviser, teacher, business consultant or trusted friend who has experience in the area where you are struggling.
Asking for help is not weakness. God often answers prayer through the wisdom of others, and some walls become smaller when someone experienced shows you where the door is.
Avoid, however, running between too many conflicting voices, because that only multiplies confusion.
Choose counsellors whose lives show wisdom, integrity and godly fruit, test every counsel by Scripture, and pray for personal conviction.
Beloved, you are not facing the blocked way alone. Micah 2:13 declares, “The breaker is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate, and are gone out by it: and their king shall pass before them, and the LORD on the head of them.”
Before you reach the gate, the Breaker has already gone ahead. God’s promise to Cyrus in Isaiah 45:2 speaks the same language: “I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron.”
Gates of brass and bars of iron represent strong, stubborn obstructions that human strength cannot move. Yet God says He will break them in pieces.
When God is truly behind your assignment, you can say with Zechariah 4:7, “Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain.”
And with David you can declare, “For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall” (Psalm 18:29).
Praise is a powerful weapon when the way is blocked. When Paul and Silas were beaten and locked in the inner prison, they prayed and sang praises to God at midnight.
Suddenly an earthquake shook the prison, the doors opened and every chain fell off (Acts 16:25–26). Praise reminded them that God’s authority was greater than the prison.
When you praise God in a blocked season, you declare that the barrier is not greater than your God.
Consider also Peter in Acts 12. Herod had killed James and planned to bring Peter out for execution after the feast.
Peter was bound with two chains between two soldiers, with guards at the door. It was a completely blocked situation.
But Acts 12:5 says, “Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.”
That night an angel woke Peter, his chains fell off, and when they reached the iron gate leading into the city, it “opened to them of his own accord” (Acts 12:10).
What guards, chains and iron could not release, united and persistent prayer released. Do not fight your battle in isolation.
Stand with a praying family, a praying church and praying believers, because some gates open when the saints pray without ceasing.
On the morning of the resurrection, the women walked to the tomb carrying spices and asked among themselves, “Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?”
But when they looked, “they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great” (Mark 16:3–4). They spent the whole journey worrying about a problem God had already solved.
Beloved, some of the obstacles you fear have already been dealt with by heaven. Keep walking in obedience, and you may discover that the stone you worried about has already been moved.
Perhaps you are standing before your own Red Sea today. You have tried repeatedly and nothing seems to work.
Your resources are limited, your helpers are silent and time seems to be running out. Hear the Word of the Lord: remain calm and seek divine direction.
The God who divided the sea has not lost His power. Pray until fear loses its grip on you. Ask God whether you should wait, advance, correct something or take another route.
Where the enemy is resisting you, stand in spiritual authority and resist him. Where God has closed the road, stop fighting it; trust His wisdom and allow Him to redirect you.
A blocked way is not always the end of the journey. It may become the place where God reveals His power, changes your direction, strengthens your faith or introduces you to a road you never knew existed.
You do not need to know how the whole journey will unfold; simply ask, “Lord, what is my next step of obedience?”
The Red Sea opened. Jericho’s walls fell. Peter’s prison gate opened of its own accord. Joseph left the prison for the palace. The stone before the tomb of Jesus was rolled away.
Therefore, refuse to conclude that your present obstruction is permanent. God can open what people have closed, close what would destroy you and create a way where none exists.
When God goes before you, no barrier can cancel His purpose for your life.
Prophetic Declaration: Every evil barrier blocking your progress shall give way. The Lord will make a way for you in the wilderness, open the right doors and redirect you from every path of destruction. You will move forward and fulfil God’s purpose for your life, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
PERSONAL CHALLENGE
Today, identify one area of your life where the way appears blocked. Instead of becoming discouraged or immediately blaming someone, prayerfully examine the situation. Ask yourself: What is causing this obstacle? Is there something I need to correct? Do I need more knowledge, preparation, patience, prayer, professional help, or a different strategy? Could God be redirecting me?
Write down one responsible step you can take today. It may be making an important phone call, submitting another application, correcting a mistake, seeking counsel, improving your skill, preparing a document, changing an ineffective strategy, or simply waiting patiently while continuing to pray.
Do not spend today staring at the obstacle. Ask God for direction and take the next wise step available to you. Remember, Israel saw the Red Sea as a blockage, but God turned the same sea into a pathway. What looks like the end may become the beginning of another direction.
A blocked way should not become a blocked life or destiny. Ask God for discernment to know whether you should wait, change direction, prepare better, keep knocking or stand firmly in prayer. Whatever the answer may be, refuse to surrender to discouragement.
EVANGELISM CHALLENGE
Today, reach out to someone who is discouraged because a door has closed or the way seems blocked in their life. Share Isaiah 43:19 with the person and remind them that God can make a way even where there appears to be no way. Encourage them not to surrender to fear, compromise, or hopelessness.
Use the opportunity to tell them about the hope found in Jesus Christ. If they have not accepted Christ, lovingly share the message of salvation with them and invite them to surrender their life to Jesus. Pray with them and encourage them to trust God while taking wise and responsible steps forward.

83. O Lord, let every wrong turn I have taken because of deception be corrected and realigned, in Jesus name.
84. Father, let no evil hand successfully reroute my steps away from Your perfect will, in Jesus name.
85. Every attempt to make me arrive late at my point of destiny, be frustrated now, in Jesus name.
86. Every power redirecting my finances, my favour, or my opportunities elsewhere, release them now, in Jesus name.
87. Every spirit assigned to make me wander in circles instead of progressing, be bound now, in Jesus name.
88. O Lord, let every hindering spirit sitting at the gate of my breakthrough be removed by force, in Jesus name.
89. Father, let divine signs, not satanic distractions, guide every decision I make from today, in Jesus name.
90. I decree that every attempt to swap my open door with a stranger’s has failed, in Jesus name.
91. Father, let every voice calling me toward a wrong path be silenced permanently, in Jesus name.
92. Every evil altar working to divert my steps away from my purpose, be scattered by fire, in Jesus name.
93. O Lord, let every long way created to wear me down be shortened by Your grace, in Jesus name.
94 Father, I thank You that You are still, and shall always be, the Way Maker over my life, in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
