EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: September 13, 2026 – Prayer To Cancel Every Bad Dream
Beloved, sleep is meant to bring rest to the body and renewal to the mind, but that rest can be violently interrupted when a frightening dream invades the night.
Some people wake up after dreaming of death, sickness, accidents, attack, strange animals, falling, being pursued, losing valuable possessions, or finding themselves trapped in an unfamiliar place.
They wake up sweating, trembling, and confused, and even after the dream has ended, the fear remains sitting in their heart throughout the entire day. You may wake up and find your own heart beating rapidly.
You may find yourself checking your body, or picking up your phone to call your loved ones just to confirm that they are safe.
In some cases, the same dream returns again and again, until a person becomes afraid to even close their eyes at night.
But beloved, you were never designed to surrender your peace to every troubling image that visits you in the night. You can take that dream straight to God in prayer and stand your ground upon the authority of His Word.
Jesus said in Matthew 13:25, “But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.”
This single verse tells us everything we need to know: an enemy can attempt to plant something evil while a man is sleeping and completely unaware.
In the parable, the owner had already planted good seed, but the enemy crept in quietly and sowed something harmful right beside it.
In the same way, a bad dream may be nothing more than an attempt of the enemy to sow fear, confusion, discouragement, sickness, or triggering an expectation of calamity into your heart while you rest.
But hear me clearly: the enemy does not carry the final authority over your life. Psalm 121:4 declares, “Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”
While you are sleeping, your God remains awake. While your natural eyes are shut, the eyes of the Lord are still wide open over you.
The enemy may attempt to frighten you in the dark, but your safety was never dependent on your own ability to stay awake all night. Your security rests entirely in the God who never sleeps.
One mistake many people make after having a bad dream is allowing the dream to determine their mood for the entire day. They wake up frightened, discouraged and expecting something terrible to happen.
Some become suspicious of everybody around them. Others immediately conclude that death, sickness, failure or tragedy is coming.
Beloved, this is not how a child of God should respond. A bad dream should lead you to prayer, not panic. Even when a dream appears to contain a warning, a warning is not always a declaration that something must happen.
God may reveal something so that you can pray, prepare, make corrections or exercise greater wisdom. When King Hezekiah was told to prepare for death in Isaiah 38, he turned his face to the wall and prayed.
The situation changed. This teaches us an important principle: when something troubling is revealed, our response matters.
Beloved, when you have a bad dream, do not immediately conclude that something terrible must happen. A dream is not greater than God.
Even when a dream appears to carry a warning, warnings can give us an opportunity to pray, seek wisdom, make corrections where necessary, and place ourselves under God’s direction.
If you wake from a disturbing dream and feel troubled, pray immediately. You do not need to wait until morning. You do not need complicated rituals. Call upon the name of Jesus and commit what you saw into God’s hands.
If you dream of death, failure, sickness, accidents, backwardness, bondage, destruction or any other troubling situation, you do not have to wake up and begin confessing it over yourself. Take it to God in prayer.
Isaiah 54:17 declares that no weapon formed against God’s people shall prosper. Notice that the Scripture does not say weapons will never be formed. It says they will not prosper. Therefore, the appearance of something negative does not mean it has already defeated you.
If you wake from a troubling dream, you can pray, “Father, if there is anything in this dream that represents an evil plan against my life, let it be cancelled and frustrated in Jesus’ name. If there is anything You are warning me about, give me understanding and wisdom to respond correctly.”
You can say, “Father, I reject everything contrary to Your will for my life that may be represented in this dream. Let every evil intention against me come to nothing.
Give me understanding if there is anything You want me to learn, and let Your peace rule my heart, in the name of Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6–7 says, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
When you wake from a bad dream, remain calm and remember who you are in Christ. Fear magnifies the dream and makes it appear more powerful than it is. Take a deep breath, call upon the name of Jesus and remind yourself that you belong to God.
2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” A frightening dream should not be permitted to govern your thoughts, decisions or expectations.
The first way to cancel a bad dream is through immediate prayer. You do not need to wait until morning if the dream awakens you during the night. Sit up and speak to God.
Describe what you saw and reject every evil implication connected to it. Declare that the dream will not become your reality. Place yourself, your family and everything that concerns you under the protection of God.
The second way is to repent and surrender yourself completely to God. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any sin, disobedience or ungodly practice that requires correction.
Proverbs 28:13 says, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”
Repentance is not an admission that every bad dream was caused by your sin. It is an opportunity to ensure that your relationship with God remains clear and that every known doorway to darkness is closed.
The third way is to reject the dream verbally. Silence can sometimes allow fear to continue speaking within you. Open your mouth and declare, “I reject this dream. It will not stand, and it will not come to pass in my life.”
Isaiah 54:17 says, “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn.” Condemn every evil verdict presented through the dream and replace it with the promises of God.
If you dreamed of death, declare Psalm 118:17: “I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.” If you dreamed of sickness, declare Isaiah 53:5: “With his stripes we are healed.”
If you dreamed of failure, declare Deuteronomy 28:13: “The LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail.” If you dreamed of loss, declare Joel 2:25 concerning restoration.
If you dreamed of being trapped, declare Psalm 124:7: “Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers.”
The fourth way is to stand upon the blood of Jesus. Revelation 12:11 says, “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony.”
The blood of Jesus represents redemption, forgiveness, victory and deliverance. Declare that your life has been purchased by Christ and that every accusation or evil claim connected to the dream is cancelled.
Plead the blood of Jesus over your spirit, soul, body, home and family. The blood of Jesus is not a magical expression to be repeated without faith. Its power comes from the sacrifice of Christ upon the cross.
When you plead the blood, you are placing your confidence in what Jesus accomplished through His death and resurrection. You are declaring that the enemy has no greater claim over your life than the One who redeemed you.
The fifth way is to pray against agreement with the dream. Sometimes fear causes people to accept a negative dream unconsciously.
They begin to say, “Something terrible will happen,” “I know I will fail,” or “This dream means my life is finished.”
These words strengthen anxiety and shape their expectations. Amos 3:3 asks, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” Withdraw your agreement from every message contrary to God’s purpose.
Say aloud, “I refuse to cooperate with fear. I reject every evil expectation. My life is hidden with Christ in God. The plans of darkness will not prevail over me.”
Your confession should agree with Scripture. Never allow a dream to become more authoritative in your heart than the Word of God.
The sixth way is to pray for divine reversal. Esther 9:1 explains that when the enemies of the Jews expected to overpower them, the situation was turned to the contrary.
God can reverse what was arranged against His people. If the dream showed defeat, pray for victory. If it showed rejection, ask God for favour.
If it showed captivity, declare freedom. If it showed mourning, ask the Lord to turn it into celebration.
The seventh way is to ask God for interpretation and direction. A dream may contain a warning rather than a final sentence.
When God warned Joseph in a dream that Herod wanted to destroy Jesus, Joseph responded by taking the child to Egypt. The dream was not given to make him afraid but to help him act wisely.
Prayer to cancel evil should therefore be accompanied by sensitivity to divine instruction. If you dream of an accident, pray for protection and also travel carefully.
If you dream of sickness, pray for healing and pay attention to your health. If the dream concerns your finances, pray for financial breakthrough and protection. If it concerns your marriage, pray and physically address the issues.
The eighth way is to fill your atmosphere with worship and Scripture. After praying, read comforting passages such as Psalms 23, 27, 35, 91, 121 and 124.
Worship God until peace returns to your heart. Psalm 149:6 says, “Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand.” Praise shifts your attention from the frightening dream to the greatness of God.
You may also play an audio Bible or gentle worship music at a suitable volume as you return to sleep. The purpose is not to create a ritual but to settle your mind upon God.
Isaiah 26:3 says, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
The ninth way is persistent prayer when the dream repeats. A recurring dream may indicate unresolved fear, a continuing life issue or an area that requires sustained prayer and attention.
Record the details and observe any repeated pattern. Set aside time to pray, study relevant Scriptures and seek wise counsel from a mature Christian leader.
If appropriate to your health, you may also add fasting. Persistence does not mean living in terror or discussing the dream endlessly. It means refusing to become spiritually careless while refusing to become emotionally controlled by fear.
But you must continue praying until you receive peace and clarity. Philippians 4:6–7 teaches that prayer and thanksgiving bring the peace of God, which guards the heart and mind.
The tenth way is to guard what enters your mind before sleeping. The Images, conversations and emotions can influence our dreams.
When you keep watching frightening videos, listening to troubling stories or sleeping while overwhelmed by anxiety may disturb your rest. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Its important to create a peaceful spiritual atmosphere before bedtime. Pray before sleeping. Forgive those who offended you during the day. Avoid carrying heated arguments, anger and fear into the night.
Read a portion of Scripture and commit your household to God. Psalm 4:8 says, “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”
Beloved, avoid accusing innocent people because you saw their faces in a dream. The appearance of a relative, friend, pastor or neighbour does not automatically prove that the individual is attacking you.
2 Corinthians 11:14 teaches that Satan can transform himself into an angel of light. A familiar face may be symbolic, connected to your memories or used deceptively to introduce fear.
Pray against the evil operation through dreams, and ask God for discernment and stop judging people falsely.
Your battle is not against flesh and blood. Ephesians 6:12 directs your attention towards spiritual wickedness rather than human suspicion.
A healthy prayer life should bring discernment, peace and love, not hatred towards everyone around you.
Perhaps you had a terrible dream last night and fear has followed you into this day. Hear the Word of the Lord: that dream is not greater than your God. Jesus Christ has authority over your night and your day.
Colossians 2:15 says that He spoiled principalities and powers and triumphed over them. The victory of Christ is stronger than every image of defeat shown to you.
Arise and pray to cancel it. Cancel every evil expectation of you. Cover yourself with the blood of Jesus. Speak the Word of God over your life.
The enemy may have attempted to sow evil while you slept, but the Lord is able to uproot what He did not plant. Matthew 15:13 says, “Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.”
Therefore, every seed of fear, sickness, loss, death, failure, confusion and oppression planted through a bad dream shall be uprooted. It will not grow again, it will not bear bad fruit, and it will not become your portion, in Jesus’ name.
In Conclusion
Beloved, you should never allow a bad dream to become more powerful in your mind than the God you serve. Dreams may warn you, reveal something that requires attention, prayer, reflect what is happening within you or, in some cases, alert you to spiritual opposition.
When you have a bad dream, pray against every evil representation in it. Ask God to frustrate every genuine plan of darkness. Ask Him to reveal anything you need to know or correct immediately. Then stand upon His promises and refuse to live under the expectation of evil.
Psalm 121:7–8 says, “The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
Therefore, child of God, arise and pray. Every evil dream assigned to produce fear, bondage, sickness, failure, backwardness, destruction or disappointment in your life shall not prosper. The counsel of God concerning your life shall stand, in Jesus’ name.
Prophetic Declaration: Every bad dream assigned to produce sorrow in your life is cancelled. Every evil seed planted while you slept is uprooted by the power of God. You and your household are covered by the blood of Jesus, and no weapon formed against you shall prosper, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Personal Challenge
Today, make a decision that no bad dream will control your emotions, decisions or expectations. If you have recently had a disturbing dream, write down what you can remember and take it before God in prayer.
Ask Him for understanding and discernment instead of immediately assuming the worst. Reject every evil representation in the dream that is contrary to God’s will for your life, but also examine yourself honestly.
Is there anything the dream is drawing your attention to? Is there fear you need to overcome, a habit you need to change, a relationship you need to handle wisely, or an area where you need to become more prayerful and watchful?
Before going to bed tonight, spend some time reading Psalm 91 and Psalm 121. Commit yourself and your household into God’s hands. Forgive anyone you are holding in your heart, avoid filling your mind with disturbing content before sleeping, and pray for peaceful rest.
Most importantly, refuse to spend your day expecting the bad dream to come to pass. After you have prayed, put your confidence in God and continue your day in faith. Let the dream move you closer to God, not deeper into fear and regret.
