EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: August 18, 2026 – Watch and Pray
“Watch and pray” is not a suggestion; it is a divine command. Jesus gave this instruction clearly to His disciples during one of the most critical moments of His earthly ministry. He was about to be arrested and crucified, yet the people who should have been praying with Him were sleeping.
Their spirits were willing, but their flesh was weak. Jesus knew that temptation was fast approaching, so He warned them to watch and pray. Unfortunately, they failed to take His warning seriously, and when the trial came, they were not spiritually prepared to face it.
To watch means to remain spiritually awake, observant, sensitive and prepared. To pray means to communicate with God, receive strength from Him and exercise spiritual authority. Watching without praying can produce anxiety because you will see many dangers without receiving divine strength to overcome them.
Praying without watching can also make you careless because you may fail to recognise the signs, temptations and warnings God is showing you. Therefore, every serious believer must combine spiritual alertness with persistent prayer.
It is risky to pray without watching. Because if you don’t watch, you may not know what’s around you or coming to harm you. But that does not mean God cannot reveal it. God has the power to show us what we need to see or know.
The watch and pray is to stay spiritually alert. You should not allow anything to meet you unprepared. The enemy comes in deceptive way to steal, manipulate and attack people during prayer. Be prayerful, but stay spiritually and physically alert.
The Bible says, pray without ceasing. In the day, you pray, in the night, you pray. Watch and pray means you should not be restlessness. It is a warning not to over-relaxed. When you pray without watching, you won’t be able to notice the warning signs God is showing you through His words, or dreams.
Many believers pray but they fail to watch. They ask God for protection but continue walking into dangerous traps. Others are watchful but prayerless; they can identity problems but lack the spiritual strength and direction to overcome them. A typical example is a prophet who only sees the problem but have no solution to the problem.
When God reveal something to you, He will also show you the way out. Watching and praying must work together because spiritual alertness reveals the danger, while prayer releases the power needed to conquer it.
Watching also means paying attention to what enters your heart, what influences your decisions and what weakens your relationship with God. It involves examining your thoughts, words, actions and associations.
Every believer must guard against spiritual coldness, repeated sin, pride, bitterness, unforgiveness and anything capable of creating an opening for the enemy.
Prayer keeps the spirit strong and helps the believer remain sensitive to God’s voice. Through prayer, wisdom comes, strength is renewed and hidden dangers are revealed.
Prayer prepares you before temptation arrives, strengthens you during the battle and preserves you after victory. A consistent prayer life makes it difficult for the enemy to take you by surprise.
Many believers pray only after a problem has entered their lives. They wait until the marriage is collapsing, the business is failing, temptation has become an addiction or spiritual attacks have increased before they begin to pray seriously.
But watching and praying means dealing with danger before it becomes destruction. It means receiving a warning from God and taking immediate spiritual and practical action immediately. Watching means recognising a small crack in the wall before the enemy turns it into an entrance.
When you are spiritually watchful, you will notice some changes in your life. You will recognise when your passion for prayer is becoming weak, when reading the Bible is becoming difficult and when worldly activities are gradually replacing your time with God.
You will notice when anger, pride, lust, jealousy or bitterness is gaining control of your heart. You will also recognise when a relationship is pulling you away from Christ. You will also notice when you are not spiritually connected to the prayer.
You will also observe when you are not yet serious with your spiritual life. These signs are very important to know and should not be ignored; they are warnings calling you back to prayer and spiritual discipline.
Jesus told Peter that Satan desired to have him and sift him as wheat. Luke 22:31–32 says: “And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.”
Peter did not know the battle that was approaching, but Jesus knew it. This teaches us that many spiritual battles begin in people’s life before we see their physical manifestations. Prayer prepares us to survive what the enemy has planned.
Your dream life can also alert you to matters requiring urgent prayer, but every dream must be tested carefully against Scripture, wisdom and the circumstances of your life.
If you repeatedly experience disturbing dreams, do not panic or depressed. Pray for discernment, and pray to cancel the negative effects upon your life. A warning is not a sentence of defeat; it is an opportunity to pray, prepare and act wisely.
Watching and praying also means guarding your family. Parents must be spiritually sensitive concerning their children. Couples must pray for their marriages and notice anything threatening their unity. You don’t have to wait until your child becomes completely rebellious before you become concerned.
You don’t have to wait until emotional distance has taken over your marriage before you begin to communicate and pray. Watch over what enters your home through relationships, entertainment, social media and conversations, but do so with wisdom not fear or unhealthy suspicion.
Some people claim to be watching, but they have become suspicious of everybody around them. They become fearful of some people God has brought into their lives. That is not spiritual discernment.
Spiritual watchfulness does not mean living in fear, accusing innocent people or interpreting every difficulty as an attack. The Holy Spirit gives wisdom, peace and self-control. When God reveals danger, He does so to guide and protect you, not to imprison your mind in terror.
Another area in which believers must watch is the return of Jesus Christ. Matthew 24:42 says: “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” We must not become so consumed with the affairs of this world that we forget eternity.
Money, possessions, fame and achievements will eventually pass away. We must live daily in holiness, forgive others, make peace where possible and remain faithful to God.
Beloved, how is your prayer life today? Are you spiritually awake, or have you fallen asleep? Have you become careless with something that once troubled your conscience? Are you ignoring warning signs in your character, marriage, family, health, finances or relationship with God? This is the time to wake up.
Romans 13:11 says: “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.”
Watching and praying should not be reserved only for emergencies. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says: “Pray without ceasing.” This means maintaining a heart that remains connected to God throughout the day.
You can pray while preparing for work, travelling, completing your responsibilities or resting at home. Prayer should become part of your lifestyle.
Watch your heart. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Pay attention to what is growing inside you. Is bitterness growing? Is jealousy growing? Is pride growing? Is lust growing? Is resentment growing? Is greed growing? Is unforgiveness growing?
You don’t need to wait until what is growing secretly begins producing destructive fruit publicly. Pray about it while it is still small. Confront it. Repent where necessary. Seek help where necessary. Remove what continually feeds it.
Watch your mouth. Some battles people pray about began through words spoken carelessly. Do not allow anger to control your tongue. Do not reveal confidential information with people because of trust. Do not destroy years of relationship through five minutes of uncontrolled speech.
Resist gossip about someone and then pray for God to repair the relationship. James 1:19 tells us to be “swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” Sometimes watching and praying means recognizing when silence is wiser than another sentence.
Beloved, the days are evil, and this is not the season to become spiritually careless. Watch over your faith, character, family, opportunities and decisions. Pay attention to what the Holy Spirit is saying, but do not live in fear.
God has not called you to be afraid of the enemy; He has called you to remain alert, prayerful and victorious. May the Lord awaken every sleeping area of your spiritual life.
May He give you the grace to recognise temptation before it overcomes you and danger before it enters your household. You will not be found sleeping when you should be praying. Your spiritual eyes shall remain open, your prayer altar shall remain strong, and the enemy shall not take advantage of you, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Personal Challenge
Today, examine yourself sincerely and ask: “Am I truly watching as much as I am praying?” Identify one area of your life where you have become careless – your prayer life, marriage, relationship, friendships, finances, children, business, health, character, or spiritual habits. Do not ignore the warning signs simply because nothing serious has happened yet.
Pay attention to what has recently changed around you and within you. If your prayer life is becoming weak, strengthen it. If a friendship is gradually pulling you away from God, establish wise boundaries.
If temptation is becoming stronger, remove what feeds it. If bitterness is growing in your heart, address it. If you are spending carelessly, correct it. If something important requires professional or practical attention, do not substitute prayer for responsible action.
Your challenge today is to identify one warning sign you have been ignoring and take one wise action concerning it. Pray about it, but also watch carefully. Do not allow what you could address today to become tomorrow’s unnecessary battle. Stay awake spiritually. Watch and pray.
Evangelism Challenge
Reach out to someone today who has become spiritually weak, discouraged or prayerless. Share Matthew 26:41 with the person and explain how watching and praying can strengthen them against temptation, deception and the traps of the enemy.
Invite the person to pray with you and encourage them to rebuild their relationship with God through repentance, Bible study and consistent fellowship. Let your message awaken someone spiritually and help them remain ready for the return of Jesus Christ.
Wisdom for Today
A believer who watches will recognize the enemy’s trap, while a believer who prays will receive the strength to overcome it. Spiritual alertness reveals the danger, but prayer prepares you for victory. Stay awake, stay sensitive and stay connected to God.
