Recognising Your Enemies In The Spirit – EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: October 21, 2026

Beloved, recognising your enemies in the spirit is the first step towards your protection. You cannot avoid what you have not identified. When you recognise that someone or something is a threat to you, you naturally take steps to avoid it.

You change your route, you guard your words, you lock your doors and you keep your distance. But if you have not recognised the threat, you will walk straight into it, smiling and unaware.

It is sad that many people are yet to recognise or identify their enemies. They are living, working, marrying, partnering and sharing their lives with people and powers they have never examined in the spirit.

Until you know your enemies spiritually, you will not know who to avoid and who to embrace. You will open your door to the destroyer and shut it against the deliverer.

Some have made grievous mistakes by emulating the wrong person, thinking that person was good, and rejecting the right person, thinking that person was evil. The children of Israel did exactly this.

When Moses tried to help them in Egypt, one of them said, “Who made thee a prince and a judge over us?” (Exodus 2:14). They rejected the very man God had raised to deliver them.

Years later, the people of Israel followed Absalom, a smooth talking rebel who stole their hearts at the gate, and turned against David, the anointed king who loved them. And when Pilate offered the crowd a choice between Jesus, the sinless Son of God, and Barabbas, a robber and murderer, “They said, Barabbas” (Matthew 27:21). They chose the criminal and crucified the Saviour.

The Pharisees saw Jesus cast out devils and said, “This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils” (Matthew 12:24). They called the work of the Holy Ghost the work of Satan.

The prophet warned, “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness” (Isaiah 5:20). When your spirit of discernment is weak, you will behave this way. You will admire the person who is destroying you and resent the person who is trying to save you.

You will run from correction and embrace flattery. You will reject the Moses God sent and follow the Absalom the enemy planted. Consider this. When you are walking along a road and you see a mad man coming from the opposite direction, what do you do? You move away from his path.

You cross to the other side. You keep your distance and watch his movements carefully. Why do you do that? Because you have already recognised that he is mad. His torn clothes, his unkempt hair, his strange behaviour and his wild words have announced his condition.

Your eyes have identified the danger, and your feet respond accordingly. The man of Gadara was like that. He “had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains” (Mark 5:3).

He cried day and night and cut himself with stones. Everybody in that region knew he was dangerous, and they avoided him.

But now imagine that the same man is mad, yet his appearance does not show it. He is well dressed, well spoken, polite and pleasant. He greets you warmly, compliments you and offers to help you.

If you do not have discernment, you will not move away from him. You may even invite him into your home, do business with him or enter into a relationship with him. You will only discover his madness when it is too late, when he has already damaged your life.

This is exactly how many spiritual enemies operate. The devil rarely comes looking like a devil. If every enemy wore horns and carried a pitchfork, nobody would be deceived. Instead, “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14).

The danger is not in the enemy you can see; the danger is in the enemy who looks normal. This is why, before you engage your enemy in battle, you must first identify them spiritually. You cannot fight what you have not recognised, and you cannot avoid what you have not exposed.

Beloved, while it is important to recognise your enemies, it is equally important to know how they are operating. Some people are constantly fighting their neighbours, relatives, colleagues and friends because they believe that everyone who disagrees with them is an enemy.

Every correction becomes an attack, every delay becomes witchcraft, and every person who does not support their idea becomes an agent of darkness. This is not discernment; it is suspicion, and suspicion can destroy relationships that God intended to bless you.

Disagreement is not the same as enmity. Paul and Barnabas had such a sharp disagreement over John Mark that “they departed asunder one from the other” (Acts 15:39). Yet neither of them was the other’s enemy.

Both continued serving God, and years later Paul still spoke of Barnabas as a fellow labourer in the work of the Lord (1 Corinthians 9:6). People can see things differently and still be on the same side.

King Saul made the terrible mistake of treating David as an enemy. David played music to refresh him, fought his battles and honoured him as the Lord’s anointed, yet Saul hunted him for years.

The real enemy was not David; it was the evil spirit that troubled Saul and the envy in his own heart. Saul spent his reign chasing the wrong target, and in the end, the true enemies, the Philistines, killed him on Mount Gilboa.

When James and John wanted to call down fire from heaven on a Samaritan village that refused to receive Jesus, the Lord turned and rebuked them, saying, “Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of” (Luke 9:55).

Not everyone who rejects or avoids talking you are your enemies. Some people simply do not understand you yet. Some people do not how to relate with you correctly like energy to energy.

Jesus taught us, “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).

Many people wake up from a dream in which a known person threatened, fed or attacked them, and they immediately conclude that this person is their enemy.

They begin to avoid them, speak against them, pray fire prayers upon them and even break relationships with them. But beloved, most times the person whose face you saw is not your enemy at all. The enemy simply borrowed their face to deceive you.

This is one of the oldest strategies of darkness. The enemy uses familiar faces because familiarity lowers your guard. If a stranger offered you food in the dream, you might refuse it, but if your mother, your pastor or your best friend offers it, you eat it without thinking.

In this way, the enemy’s operation in your life becomes faster and easier. At the same time, by using the face of an innocent person, the enemy achieves a second purpose: he turns you against the very people God placed in your life to help you.

While you are busy fighting your aunt, your neighbour or your colleague, the real power behind the attack continues working freely.

Remember that “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). If he can disguise himself as an angel, he can certainly disguise himself as your relative.

This is why discernment is very necessary. Discernment alerts you to danger, but it also protects you from false conclusions. So when you see a familiar face attacking you in the dream, do not rush to confront that person or to destroy the relationship.

Instead, address the spirit behind the face. Pray, “Every power using the face of this person to attack me, be exposed and destroyed, in the name of Jesus.”

Ask the Holy Spirit for further revelation, because the Bible says, “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” (2 Corinthians 13:1). If God confirms that the person is genuinely involved, He will also give you wisdom on how to protect yourself.

But do not build your relationships on dreams alone. Fight the spirit, pray for the person and let God do the exposing. Some believers spend so much of their time trying to study or identify which person is responsible for their difficulties.

They go from prophet to prophet asking, “Who is behind my problem?” They analyse every relative, suspect every neighbour and replay every conversation, searching for the culprit. Their whole spiritual life becomes an investigation, and they have little time left to focus on something else but to beep their searchlight on people.

When the disciples saw a man born blind, they asked Jesus the same kind of question: “Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?” (John 9:2). They wanted to know who was responsible.

But Jesus answered, “Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him” (John 9:3). Then He healed the man. Jesus shifted the focus from blame to deliverance, from the culprit to the cure.

Beloved, knowing who is behind your problem is not always necessary for your deliverance. The name of Jesus is enough to deal with every enemy, whether you know their identity or not. “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth” (Philippians 2:10).

You do not need to know the name of the arrow before you return it to its sender. You only need to know the name of Jesus. Also understand that not every difficulty comes from an enemy.

Some troubles come from our own choices, for “whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Galatians 6:7). Some come as a test of our faith, for “the trying of your faith worketh patience” (James 1:3).

Some come as the loving discipline of God, “for whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth” (Hebrews 12:6).

And some battles come from within, for James asked, “From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?” (James 4:1).

Balanced discernment asks God, “Lord, what is the source of this?” before it shouts, “Who is my enemy?”

Beloved, temptation is one of the commonest weapons the enemy uses to bring down and trap people. Many destinies that could not be destroyed by attack were destroyed by temptation.

The enemy knows that if he cannot curse you, he can entice you to sin, and sin will open the door for him to do what he could not do by force. This was the strategy of Balaam, who could not curse Israel, but taught Balak how to lead them into sin so that judgment would fall upon them.

The devil studies the areas of weakness in your life and attacks them. He came to Jesus after forty days of fasting, when “he was afterward an hungred” (Matthew 4:2), and his first temptation was about bread.

He knows when you are tired, lonely, broke, angry, hurt or bored, and he times his temptations accordingly. David was not on the battlefield where kings should be; he was idle on his rooftop at evening time when he saw Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:1–2).

The enemy found him in a season of idleness and struck him in his area of weakness. But hear this carefully: the enemy only presents the bait. The decision to take it lies with you. “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed” (James 1:14).

Achan confessed the pattern clearly: “When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment… then I coveted them, and took them” (Joshua 7:21).

He saw, he desired, he took. Eve followed the same path: she “saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes” (Genesis 3:6), and then she ate. The enemy works through “the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” (1 John 2:16).

Thank God, temptation is not stronger than the believer who walks with God. “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Joseph found the way of escape when Potiphar’s wife grabbed his garment; he “left his garment in her hand, and fled” (Genesis 39:12). Jesus defeated every temptation with “It is written.”

So know your weaknesses, guard them, avoid places and people that feed them, and obey the word of Jesus: “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation” (Matthew 26:41).

Beloved, you must not only recognise the enemy; you must recognise its source. When you treat only the symptom, the problem keeps returning. But when you deal with the source, the problem ends.

Beloved, recognising your enemies in the spirit is not a call to fear, suspicion or bitterness. It is a call to wisdom, vigilance and victory. The enemy is real, but he is not all powerful, and he is not invincible.

Jesus has already “spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it” (Colossians 2:15). Your assignment is not to defeat a devil that has already been defeated, but to recognise him, resist him and enforce the victory Christ has already won.

The way out begins with surrender to God. Before you resist the devil, you must submit to the Lord, for “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

The enemy has no power over a life that is fully yielded to God, washed by the blood of Jesus and hidden in Christ. So examine your heart, confess every sin, release every offence and close every door through which the enemy may have gained access.

When there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you. Then ask the Lord daily to open your spiritual eyes, as Elisha prayed for his servant.

Pray for the gift of discerning of spirits, so that you will see beyond faces into forces, beyond words into hearts and beyond appearances into intentions.

Fill yourself with the Word of God, because the Word is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart, and the more it dwells in you, the more quickly you will recognise what is false.

Pay attention to the peace of God in your spirit, and do not enter any covenant, partnership, relationship or agreement without first asking counsel from the mouth of the Lord.

Do not call evil good, and do not call good evil. At the same time, do not see enemies in every person who disagrees with you, and do not destroy godly relationships because the enemy borrowed a familiar face in your dream. Love people, but be very careful.

Bind the spirit, and pray for the person. Stop spending your energy hunting for culprits, and spend it seeking the face of the One whose name is above every name.

Recognise the enemies that operate from within as well as those that attack from without. Resist the enemy of fear with the truth that God has not given you the spirit of fear.

Reject the enemy of deception by anchoring yourself in the truth that sets you free. Silence the enemy of accusation by declaring that there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.

Release offence before it becomes bitterness, encourage yourself in the Lord when discouragement comes, and humble yourself before pride brings you down.

Know your areas of weakness, guard them carefully, and when temptation comes, flee as Joseph fled, and answer as Jesus answered, “It is written.”

Watch and pray, especially in the night seasons, and cover your field, your dreams and your household with the blood of Jesus.

Put on the whole armour of God every day, and fight with the weapons that are mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds: the blood of the Lamb, the name of Jesus, the Word of God, prayer, fasting, praise and holy living.

And finally, do not fight from fear; fight from victory. When your eyes are fully opened, you will discover what Elisha’s servant discovered, that “they that be with us are more than they that be with them” (2 Kings 6:16), and that the mountain round about you is full of horses and chariots of fire.

Every enemy that has hidden behind your problems shall be exposed. Every tare sown in your field shall be uprooted. Every disguise shall be torn away. Every stolen blessing shall be recovered.

You shall not be ignorant of the devices of Satan, and he shall not gain advantage over you, for greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

WISDOM FOR TODAY

The enemy that looks dangerous is easy to avoid; the enemy that looks friendly is the one that destroys. Discernment is not suspecting everyone; it is seeing clearly what God reveals.

PERSONAL CHALLENGE

Beloved, today I challenge you to take a sincere inventory of your relationships and your inner life before God. Find a quiet place, take a notebook and ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes. Write down the people closest to you and prayerfully consider the fruit of each relationship.

Ask yourself whether each one draws you closer to God or pulls you away, whether they bring peace or confusion, and whether their words match their actions over time. Do not decide in haste, and do not decide in anger, but let the Holy Spirit show you who to embrace and who to keep at a distance.

Then think about anyone you have treated as an enemy because of a disagreement, a misunderstanding or a dream. If the Lord has not confirmed that they are working against you, release them from your suspicion.

Pray for them by name, bind any spirit that may have borrowed their face, and where necessary, take a step to restore that relationship. You may discover that someone you rejected was actually sent to help you.

Next, identify your areas of weakness honestly. Write down the temptations that keep returning to you, whether they involve money, lust, anger, pride, laziness or bitterness. Then write beside each one a Scripture you will use to resist it, and a practical step you will take to avoid the places, people and situations that feed it. Remember that Joseph did not stay to argue with temptation; he fled.

Finally, examine your heart for the inner enemies of fear, deception, accusation, offence, discouragement and pride. Whichever one you find, confess it, renounce it and replace it with the truth of God’s Word.

Before you sleep tonight, spend at least thirty minutes in warfare prayer, covering your mind, your dreams and your household with the blood of Jesus, and declaring that you shall no longer be ignorant of the devices of the enemy.

EVANGELISM CHALLENGE

Many people around you are fighting the wrong battles. They are blaming relatives, suspecting neighbours and living in fear, not knowing that the real enemy is spiritual and that the only lasting victory is in Jesus Christ. Reach out to one person today and share the good news that Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil and to set the captives free. Lead them to Christ, because the first step to recognising and defeating spiritual enemies is to come under the covering of the blood of the Lamb.

AFRICAN PROVERB

“When there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you.”

Meaning: An outside enemy is most dangerous when he finds a door, a weakness or an ally inside. A house with strong walls and closed doors frustrates the thief. In the same way, when you deal with fear, deception, pride, offence and every secret sin within your own heart, the powers of darkness outside lose their legal ground. Before you fight the enemy at the gate, make sure there is no traitor in the house.

CLOSING REFLECTION

Beloved, the enemy is real, but so is your victory. Recognising your enemies in the spirit is not meant to make you afraid of everyone or suspicious of everything. It is meant to make you wise, watchful and victorious.

Some enemies come in sheep’s clothing, some borrow familiar faces, some hide in temptations, and some live quietly inside the heart. But none of them can stand before a believer whose eyes are opened, whose heart is clean and whose life is hidden in Christ.

So walk in balanced discernment. Love people, but fight powers. Guard your weaknesses, close every door, and refuse every voice of fear, deception and accusation. Stop hunting culprits and start seeking the face of God. And when you are tempted to think you are alone in the battle, remember what Elisha told his servant: “Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.”

Stay blessed, stay discerning, and stay on fire!

ALTAR CALL

ALTAR CALL: If you want to give your life to Christ; you want your sins forgiven; you want to become a child of God; you want to experience the realities of new birth; you want to make heaven; Or you were once saved and fell along the line, and now you want to rededicate your life to Christ… Then pray this short prayer of Faith Say it loud and mean it:

Lord Jesus, I surrender my life to you today. Forgive me my sins, wash me with your blood. I believe you died for me, on the third day you rose again that I may be justified. Right now, I believe that my sins are forgiven; I’m justified by your blood; I’m born-again; I’m saved; I’m a child of God; I’m free from the power of sin to serve the living God. Thank you Jesus for receiving me; thank you Jesus for restoring me; thank you Jesus for saving me

Thank God for the salvation of your soul. I congratulate you for the best decision of your life. If you just prayed the prayer of salvation online please send your testimonies and prayer request to info@ejom.org, +234 (809) 982-8623. To sow a seed, kindly go to our donation page. God bless you.
