OPENING SCRIPTURES

Psalm 1:1–3 (KJV)

But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

1 Corinthians 15:33 (KJV)
“Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”

MEMORY VERSE

Proverbs 13:20 (KJV)
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”

Who’s In Your Circle? – EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: October 19, 2026

Beloved, one of the most important questions you must ask yourself today is this: Who is in your circle?

The people you allow into your life can influence your thoughts, your decisions, your habits, your character and your future. Your circle is made up of the people you regularly associate with, trust, listen to, seek advice from and allow to influence your choices.

These may include your friends, colleagues, business partners, advisers, neighbours and even certain members of your family. Hear me well: your inner circle will either challenge you to rise or keep you stagnant. There is no neutral ground.

Many people have made costly mistakes because they listened to the wrong people. Some assumed that because a person is a Christian, everything that person says must be approved by God. That is not true. Judas was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus.

He walked with the Master, saw the miracles and heard the teachings, yet he was a wrong energy inside the inner circle. “Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me” (Psalm 41:9).

Others have abandoned their purpose entirely because of the wrong people in their lives. You may be a good person, but if you continually surround yourself with the wrong people, you may struggle to fulfil your destiny, or you may move slowly when God wants you to run.

The Bible warns us: “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Corinthians 15:33). Notice the word deceived. Corruption through company is often so gradual that the person being corrupted does not notice. This is why we must take our relationships seriously.

Beloved, understand this: the voice in your inner circle may not be a human being at all. It may be a spirit. There are spirits that give counsel, control decisions and steer people away from God’s plan while making it feel like their own idea.

King Ahab had four hundred prophets around him, but a lying spirit was speaking through their mouths (1 Kings 22:22). King Saul, when he could no longer hear God, went to consult a familiar spirit at Endor (1 Samuel 28:7), and that consultation sealed his end.

This is why the Word says, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God” (1 John 4:1). Some of the strange thoughts, sudden urges, wrong counsel and destructive decisions in your life must be tested.

If a voice keeps pushing you away from prayer, away from the Word, away from godly people and into sin, that voice is not your friend, and it must be cast out of your circle in the name of Jesus.

Some people are not meant to know your plans and your dreams. Once they know, they begin to create boundaries for you. They begin to fight what they know, block what they see coming and work against what you told them in confidence.

Joseph shared his dreams with his brothers, “and they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words” (Genesis 37:8). His dream was from God, but his audience was wrong.

Not everyone who laughs with you is a good influence. Some people laugh openly with you while their heart is against you. “The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords” (Psalm 55:21).

Not everyone who praises you in public does so from a sincere mind. Some praise you openly to mask the bitterness and envy they carry against you. Joab greeted Amasa with a kiss and a question about his health, and in that same moment he struck him with a sword (2 Samuel 20:9–10).

Likewise, beloved, not everyone who corrects you is your enemy. Sometimes the person who tells you an uncomfortable truth is far more helpful than the person who agrees with everything you say. “Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful” (Proverbs 27:6).

When David sinned, God sent Nathan to his circle with a hard word: “Thou art the man” (2 Samuel 12:7). That rebuke led David to repentance and restoration. Rehoboam, on the other hand, rejected the counsel of the elders and listened to young men who told him what he wanted to hear (1 Kings 12:8), and he lost ten tribes in a single day.

Your circle should contain people who can correct you. If everyone around you only claps for you, you are in danger.

You cannot be a good driver without knowing who is travelling in the vehicle with you. Trust me, some passengers do not want you to reach your destination. Some simply want the vehicle to develop a fault along the way.

Some will distract the driver, some will complain the whole journey, and some will quietly loosen what keeps the vehicle moving. Jonah was in the ship running from God, and a great storm came upon everybody on board (Jonah 1:4).

The sailors had no rest until the wrong passenger was dealt with. Some of the storms in your life are not about you. They are about who is in your boat. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you who is travelling with you. Not everyone deserves access to your private life.

Unfortunately, some people reveal everything about their lives to anyone who appears friendly and godly. They discuss their marital problems, financial challenges, business plans, family disagreements and personal weaknesses without considering whether the listener can be trusted. This is dangerous.

Do not be too quick to share something personal with someone simply because they appear good, calm and wise. Some are Christians, yet they are traitors. The prophet Micah warned: “Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom” (Micah 7:5).

Samson told Delilah all his heart (Judges 16:17), and the secret of his strength became the instrument of his captivity. What you reveal carelessly, the enemy will use deliberately.

Beloved, there are different types of people. Some are sent by God to lift you, and some are sent by the enemy to bury you.

Some come into your life for a season, and some come for a mission. You must know the difference, because the people around you will either carry you to your destiny or carry you away from it.

1. The friend who enjoys your weakness

There are friends who always encourage your weaknesses. They like you more when you fail. Anytime you discuss your failure with them, their faces light up. They are comfortable with you as long as you remain down. The day you begin to rise, their attitude changes.

David knew this kind of people: “But in mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together” (Psalm 35:15). A true friend weeps when you fall and rejoices when you rise.

The Bible commands, “Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth” (Proverbs 24:17). So if someone rejoices at your stumbling, ask yourself what that makes them. Beware of them. A friend who feeds your weakness is preparing your downfall.

2. The friend who discourages your progress

Beware of people who discourage your progress. They know that what you are doing is right. They know the plan is the best thing for you. Yet they will try everything to stop you from doing it.

Do you know how many people have dropped the purpose God placed in their hands just because of a friend? Consider the young prophet in 1 Kings 13. God gave him a clear instruction.

Then an old prophet came and said, “I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD… But he lied unto him” (1 Kings 13:18).

The young man believed a fellow prophet over the word God gave him, and a lion met him on the way. He did not die through a witch. He died through a colleague.

Even Peter, a disciple in the inner circle, tried to stop Jesus from going to the cross. Jesus did not spare him: “Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men” (Matthew 16:23). When a voice tries to talk you out of the will of God, no matter how close that person is, you must say, “Get thee behind me.”

3. The friend who smiles while you walk into danger

Your inner circle must contain people who can correct you, tell you the truth and warn you. But there are friends who just smile and smile. Even when they see you walking into danger, they smile.

Even when God shows them in a dream or in prayer the danger ahead of you, they look away and say nothing. Beware of them. God holds watchmen accountable: “But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned… his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand” (Ezekiel 33:6).

A real friend will risk your anger to save your life. Paul asked the Galatians, “Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?” (Galatians 4:16).

Abigail stood in front of David’s anger and stopped him from shedding innocent blood, and David blessed God for her counsel (1 Samuel 25:32–33). Keep the Abigails. Watch the smilers.

4. The friend who loves your benefits, not you

Be careful of friends who love you because of the benefits they gain from you. Once the benefits are gone, the relationship is buried.

“The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich hath many friends” (Proverbs 14:20). “Every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts” (Proverbs 19:6).

The prodigal son was surrounded by friends while his money lasted, but when famine came, “no man gave unto him” (Luke 15:16). Gehazi stood beside Elisha, yet his eyes were on what he could collect.

When Naaman left, Gehazi said, “As the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him” (2 Kings 5:20). Some people are in your circle only to take somewhat of you. When the somewhat finishes, they will finish with you.

5. The friend who does not believe in what you do

Avoid people who do not believe in what you do. They always want to bring their own beliefs into your system. They want to import strange doctrines, strange practices and strange solutions into your life, your home and your ministry.

“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3). Israel fell into this trap: “They feared the LORD, and served their own gods” (2 Kings 17:33). That is mixture, and mixture is dangerous. “A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump” (Galatians 5:9).

One person who keeps telling you to try another way, visit another place or consult another power can corrupt everything God is building in you. One person who does not believe in you still like you is dangerous.

6. The friend who is easily twisted by other people’s opinion of you

Stay with people who are not easily turned by what others say about you. Some friends are with you today, but the moment someone speaks badly about you, they switch sides without even asking your own story.

At Lystra, the people wanted to worship Paul as a god. Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, “who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead” (Acts 14:19).

The same crowd that praised him stoned him, all because of what others told them. The crowd that shouted “Hosanna” for Jesus was the same crowd that later shouted “Crucify him.”

But look at Jonathan. His own father Saul was speaking against David, yet “Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father” (1 Samuel 19:4). That is a covenant friend. Find a Jonathan, and be a Jonathan.

7. The friend you keep only because of history

Do not keep people around merely because of your history together. A good friend of yesterday can become your worst enemy of today.

Ahithophel was David’s trusted counsellor. His counsel was so respected that it was as if a man had inquired of the oracle of God. Yet when Absalom rebelled, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom” (2 Samuel 15:31).

David did not argue. He prayed, “O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.” History is not the same as loyalty. Long years together do not guarantee a good future together. Let God, not memories, decide who stays.

8. The friend who kills dreams

Your circle should challenge you to grow, not kill your dreams. Joseph’s brothers were his own blood, yet they said, “Come now therefore, and let us slay him… and we shall see what will become of his dreams” (Genesis 37:20).

Their target was not just Joseph. Their target was the dream. Some people around you are not fighting you; they are fighting what God showed you. Anybody who mocks your vision, belittles your calling or laughs at your God given ideas is a dream killer. Move your dreams away from them.

9. The talebearer

“A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter” (Proverbs 11:13). If a person always brings you other people’s secrets, be sure they are carrying your own secrets to others. The mouth that gossips to you will gossip about you.

10. The envious friend

After the women sang that David had slain his ten thousands, “Saul eyed David from that day and forward” (1 Samuel 18:9). Envy watches your progress with an evil eye. Some people are not happy about your promotion, your marriage, your children or your breakthrough. They congratulate you with their mouth while their eyes are counting what you have. Pray for them, but keep your distance.

11. The Delilah: the one who keeps pressing until you give in

Some people will not attack you openly. They will simply keep pressing, day after day, until your resistance breaks. “And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death” (Judges 16:16). Samson resisted the first time, the second time and the third time, but the daily pressure wore him down.

Beware of the person who keeps bringing up the same sinful suggestion, the same wrong deal, the same ungodly relationship, until you get tired of saying no. Persistent pressure is a weapon of the enemy. If you cannot remove the pressure, remove yourself from the presser.

PART TWO: THE PEOPLE YOU MUST KEEP CLOSE

1. The Barnabas: the one who opens doors for you
When everybody was afraid of Saul after his conversion, “Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles” (Acts 9:27). A Barnabas believes in you before others do and speaks for you in rooms you cannot enter.

2. The Aaron and Hur: the ones who hold up your hands
When Moses grew weary in battle, “Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands… and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun” (Exodus 17:12). These are the people who pray with you, stand with you and support you when you are tired. Your victory is tied to them.

3. The Nathan: the one who tells you the truth
He will say “Thou art the man” when you need to hear it (2 Samuel 12:7). His rebuke will hurt, but it will heal.

4. The Onesiphorus: the one who is not ashamed of your chain
Paul wrote, “he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain” (2 Timothy 1:16). Many people will celebrate you on the mountain, but very few will visit you in the prison. Keep the ones who refresh you in your low seasons.

5. The Elijah: the one who carries what you need
Elisha refused to leave Elijah, saying, “As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee” (2 Kings 2:2). Some people carry the mantle for your next level. Stay close, serve faithfully and do not let anyone talk you out of following them.

6. The Ruth: the one who stays when it is hard
“Whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God” (Ruth 1:16). When Orpah kissed Naomi and went back, Ruth clave unto her. Treasure the people who stay when there is nothing left to gain.

7. The Mordecai: the one who reminds you of your purpose

When Esther was tempted to stay quiet and comfortable in the palace, Mordecai spoke the word that woke her up: “Who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14). Keep people who remind you why God placed you where you are, who will not let you get comfortable while your assignment is waiting.

8. The Priscilla and Aquila: the ones who will risk for you

Paul said they “have for my life laid down their own necks” (Romans 16:4). Some friends will put their own comfort, reputation and safety on the line for you. They are rare. When you find them, honour them.

9. The Epaphras: the one who prays for you in secret

“Epaphras… always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God” (Colossians 4:12). There are people whose names you may not hear in public, but they are standing in the gap for you on their knees. An intercessor in your circle is worth more than a hundred admirers.

10. The Timothy: the one who genuinely cares

Paul said, “For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state” (Philippians 2:20). Notice the word naturally. Some people have to be begged to care; others care without being asked. Keep the Timothys.

11. The four friends: the ones whose faith carries you

Four men carried a paralysed man to Jesus. When they could not get through the door, they broke open the roof. “When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee” (Mark 2:5). It was their faith that brought his miracle. In your weakest moment, you need people whose faith can carry you to Jesus when you cannot walk yourself.

THE WORD FOR YOU TODAY

Beloved, your circle is your covering, your counsel and your company on the journey of destiny. Do not leave it to chance. Do not let loneliness, history, benefits or flattery decide who sits at your table. Let the Holy Ghost decide.

As you obey, God will remove every Delilah, Absalom, Achan and Balaam, and He will surround you with Mordecais, Epaphrases, Timothys and faith filled friends who will carry you into your miracle, in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen!

PERSONAL CHALLENGE

Today, write down the names of the people closest to you. Prayerfully bring that list before God. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you who to draw closer to, who to pray for, and who to lovingly distance yourself from. Then obey whatever He shows you, no matter how uncomfortable.

EVANGELISM CHALLENGE

Someone around you is trapped in a destructive circle. Reach out to one person today and introduce them to Jesus, the Friend who never betrays. Invite them into a godly fellowship where they can be sharpened and saved.

AFRICAN PROVERB

“Show me your friend, and I will tell you who you are.”

Meaning: A person’s character, direction and future can be read through the people they keep closest. Friendship is a mirror; what is in your companions will soon show up in you. Choose your friends carefully, because they are quietly shaping who you are becoming.

CLOSING REFLECTION

Beloved, your destiny is too precious to be handed over to the wrong company. The God who called Abram out from his kindred, who knit David’s soul with Jonathan, and who chose twelve to walk with Him, is the same God ordering your steps today. Let Him prune your circle. Let Him close doors that should be closed and open doors that should be opened. What you lose in separation, God will restore in elevation. Walk with the wise, and you shall be wise. Walk with Jesus, and you shall never walk alone.

Stay blessed, stay separated unto God, and stay on fire!
