Up NEPA! A Community Out of Darkness – EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: November 8, 2026

For those outside Nigeria, the word NEPA means National Electric Power Authoirty, the body that supplied electricity to Nigerians for many years before it was replaced by PHCN, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria.

“Up NEPA” is what people shout when the electricity is restored after a long blackout.

It is not a shout of one person. It is the shout of a whole community. Everybody rejoices at the same time, because the light did not come to one house. It came to the whole street.

Beloved, that shout is a picture of what God wants to do in your life, your family and your community today. Isaiah 9:2 says, “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light.”

There is a Greater light that no outage can cut off. There is a power that no transformer failure can stop. His name is Jesus Christ, the Light of the world.

Today, the Lord is restoring light to every dark area of your life. Before this day ends, you will shout your own “Up NEPA!” because your light has come!

Imagine a community that has been without electricity for several days. Everywhere is dark at night. Businesses are struggling, children cannot study comfortably, and families are forced to depend on candles, rechargeable lamps, and generators.

Before you know it, somebody shouts, “UP NEPA!” Children begin to celebrate, neighbours rejoice, and everywhere becomes bright again.

Those who have been waiting for electricity quickly rush to charge their phones, pump water, iron their clothes, and attend to other important activities.

Some people have even become accustomed to living without electricity. Then suddenly, power is restored! The restoration of that light is the joy God is bringing to your life. The light represents the breakthrough.

But here is something I want you to understand today: The excitement is not necessarily because the people have never experienced light before. They are rejoicing because something they have been missing has finally been restored.

This is exactly what happens when the light of God enters a life, family, or community that has been living in spiritual darkness for years.

NEPA could bring light and take it the next hour. Many times, people shouted “Up NEPA!” and within ten minutes, the light was gone again, and the whole street groaned together.

But the light of Jesus does not go off or blink in a day. It is not seasonal. It is not rationed. It is not dependent on government policy or the weather. The source is from the Holy Spirit. When Jesus comes into a life, the light stays.

James 1:17 calls God “the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” He does not flicker. He does not fluctuate. He does not fail.

There is a powerful picture in Exodus 10. God sent nine plagues on Egypt, and the ninth was in gross darkness.

Exodus 10:22-23 says, “And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days: They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.”

Imagine that! The whole of Egypt was in a total blackout, so thick that people could not see one another and could not even get up from where they sat. But in Goshen, where God’s people lived, there was light in every house.

It was as if the whole country had no power, but one community was enjoying uninterrupted supply. While Egyptians sat in darkness, the children of Israel were moving about, cooking, talking and worshipping in the light.

What makes “Up NEPA!” so special is that it is not a quiet thing. It is a shout. And it is not one person shouting; the whole community shouts together. The joy is shared. The relief is collective.

That is exactly what happened when God turned the captivity of Zion. Psalm 126:1-2 says, “When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.

Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them.”

When God restores light, it is so sudden and so wonderful that it feels like a dream. People’s mouths are filled with laughter. Even outsiders notice and say, “God has done great things for them!”

The same happened in Samaria. When Philip went there and preached Christ, miracles happened, unclean spirits came out, and the lame and paralysed were healed.

Acts 8:8 says, “And there was great joy in that city.” A whole city came out of darkness, and a whole city rejoiced.

But when light came to Nineveh through Jonah’s preaching, from the king to the least person, the whole city turned to God (Jonah 3:5-10). That’s so interesting and transforming!

Beloved, God is not only interested in your personal light. He wants your whole family to come out of darkness. He wants your whole street, your whole village, your whole city, your whole nation to shout, “Up NEPA!” in the spirit.

Isaiah 60:3 says, “And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.” When your light comes, it will draw others to the light.

Beloved, that is God’s promise for His people. Isaiah 60:2 says, “For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.”

Darkness may cover your street. Darkness may cover your nation. The economy may be dark and struggling to finds its light. The news may be dark. But there shall be light in your dwelling! The Lord shall arise upon you and nation again!

Psalm 112:4 says, “Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness.” Even in the darkest season, God has a way of turning on the light for those who belong to Him.

Darkness represents more than the absence of physical light. Spiritually, it can represent ignorance, sin, confusion, hopelessness, deception, and separation from the truth of God.

A person can be physically wealthy, highly educated, and socially respected, yet still be walking in spiritual darkness.

There are people whose lives have been overshadowed by ignorance, hopelessness, fear, sinful habits and discouragement. They have become so accustomed to their circumstances that they no longer believe meaningful change is possible.

Beloved, Christ is the true source of our spiritual light. Electricity can illuminate a room, but only Christ can bring the light of salvation into a person’s heart and many.

Electricity can help people see their surroundings, but God’s Word helps us understand spiritual truth and recognize the path of righteousness.

Consider Zacchaeus in Luke 19. After receiving Jesus, he spoke about giving to the poor and restoring what he had taken dishonestly.

His encounter with Christ affected how he handled money and treated people. Those who had suffered through his conduct could now see evidence of change.

What would your community experience if you allowed God’s Word to shape your behaviour more fully? Perhaps a disagreement would become a respectful conversation.

Perhaps someone vulnerable would receive support. Perhaps a false report would stop spreading because you refused to repeat it. Light becomes visible through such choices.

Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world.” You may not be able to solve every problem in your neighbourhood, family, or workplace, but you can contribute something useful.

One interesting thing about electricity is that it exposes things that darkness has concealed for long. When a room is dark, you may not notice the dirt on the floor, the objects scattered around, or the things that need cleaning.

But once you switch on the light, everything becomes visible. This is exactly what the Word of God does in our lives.

Hebrews 4:12 teaches that the Word of God is living, powerful, and able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

When God’s light shines upon you, it reveals areas where you need true repentance, direction, correction, and spiritual growth.

Sometimes we are very quick to see the faults of others while closing our eyes to our own. We complain about leaders who cheat the people, yet we cut corners in our own businesses.

We condemn those who are unfaithful, yet we are quietly keeping relationships we know God is not pleased with. We pray fire against wickedness, yet we refuse to forgive the people who offended us.

Beloved, before you ask God to expose the darkness around you, let Him search the darkness within you.

Think about what happens when electricity fails in a community. Everybody begins to complain. Some people blame the electricity company, others blame the government, while others simply express their frustration.

Complaints may draw attention to a problem, but complaints alone do not repair damaged transformers, replace faulty cables, or restore electricity.

In the same way, many Christians complain about the darkness in their communities without making any effort to become part of the solution.

What is the first thing people do when NEPA brings light after a long outage? They rush! They iron clothes. They charge phones and power banks. They pump water into tanks.  They do everything they have been waiting to do in a rush, because they know the light may not last.

Jesus said something similar in John 12:35-36: “Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light.”

When God gives you a season of light, use it well on time. When there is an open door, walk through it immediately.

When there is grace for salvation, receive it quickly. When there is an opportunity to serve, serve well. When there is a season of favour, maximise it well. Do not waste your season of light sleeping, thinking the light will remain stable.

Jesus also said in John 9:4, “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.”

The light of salvation is shining today. 2 Corinthians 6:2 says, “behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” Don’t wait until darkness comes again. Start walking in the light today.

Once God has brought you out of darkness, you are not meant to enjoy the light alone. You are now a charging point for your community.

Your family should be able to come to you and receive the light of Christ. Your neighbours should see your light and come to the Source that helped you become a better person.

Philippians 2:15 says we are to shine “as lights in the world” in the midst of “a crooked and perverse nation.” Don’t hide your light. Don’t hoard your testimony. Let your light shine so that your whole community can come out of darkness.

But beloved, some believers have been called out of darkness, yet they are still living as if the light has not come. They still keep some dark habits.

They still visit some dark places. They still hold on to some dark covenants in their possessions. Paul said, “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).

It is not enough to be called out of darkness; you must walk as a child of light.

Beloved, many spiritual attacks thrive in darkness. Night attacks and bad dreams operate more in dark. The Bible says while men slept the enemy came to sow tares and went his ways.

The enemy loves darkness because darkness is his territory. But when the light of God fills your life, when the wind of the Holy Spirit starts blowing like a fan in your room, those spiritual mosquitoes cannot settle on you again.

Immediately, they lose their direction and scatter. That’s the power of light. When the light comes back in your house, you don’t keep the candles burning and sit in the corner.

You switch on the bulbs and enjoy the light conveniently. In the same way, when God has brought His light into your life, stop living as if you are still in darkness.

Sometimes NEPA brings light, but it is low current. The bulb is glowing faintly. The fan is turning so slowly you can count the blades. You plug in the fridge, and it refuses to start. There is light, but there is no power.

Many Christians are living on low current in that way. They go to church. They carry Bible. They know how to say “Praise the Lord.”

But there is no power. They cannot cast out a demon. They cannot pray for one hour. They cannot overcome one temptation. They fall at every small test.

2 Timothy 3:5 describes people “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” They have the bulb, but not the voltage.

Jesus did not die for you to live on low current. He said in Acts 1:8, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.”

Ephesians 5:18 says, “be filled with the Spirit.” God wants you to keep on running on full power, carrying every load, powering every appliance of your destiny. Ask God today for a fresh filling of the Holy Ghost. Ask Him to upgrade your voltage.

Beloved, let me tell you something simple. When NEPA brings light, only the houses that are connected to the source enjoy it.

If your wire is cut, or your meter is not working, or your house is not connected to the line, you can hear your neighbours shouting “Up NEPA” while you are still sitting in darkness, frustrated.

The light of God is available, but you must be connected to the right source. Jesus said, “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and the same in me, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing” (John 15:5).

Sometimes the light comes back with too much force. There is a surge, and if you don’t have a stabiliser, your television, your fridge or your phone charger can get burnt. Many people have lost expensive appliances because the power came back too strong and they were not prepared.

Even when NEPA brings light to the whole street, some houses remain dark. Why? Some were disconnected because they did not pay for electricity bills. Some never applied for a connection. Some have the wiring, but they never switched on the main switch.

Beloved, Jesus is standing at the door of many lives, ready to bring light in darkest part of your life. Revelation 3:20 says, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”

The light is available now. The power is available now. But some people have never opened the door for the Light to illuminate in their life. Some have heard about Jesus all their lives, but they have never personally connected to Him.

They are living right next to the light but sitting in darkness. Today, when you are In Christ, you have the opportunity to switch on the main switch. You can open the door to connect to the Light of the world.

Beloved, some people prayed for breakthrough, and when it came, it destroyed them. Why? Because they don’t have the capacity to maintain or control it.

They prayed for money, and the money made them proud. They prayed for promotion, and the promotion made them forget God. They prayed for fame, and fame scattered their home.

Deuteronomy 8:12 to 14 warns, “Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein… Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God.”

The Holy Spirit is your stabiliser. Character is your stabiliser. Humility is your stabiliser. Before God releases the full surge of your blessing, He wants to make sure you have what it takes to handle it.

That is why some delays are not denials; they are preparation for something greater. Let God install the stabiliser before the big power comes.

Some people are in a church where the light is shining, but their own house is still dark, because they are not yet connected their home to the power of God. They come to church, but they have never given their lives to Jesus.

They hear the Word, but they don’t obey it. They are around the light, but not connected to the source. If you want God’s light to shine in your life, you will need connect to Jesus through fellowship.

God told His people, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.

For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising” (Isaiah 60:1–3).

Notice something. The darkness is still there. “The darkness shall cover the earth.” But in the middle of that darkness, God says, “Arise, shine.” And when you shine, people come to your light.

Beloved, God has not called you only to enjoy the light. He has called you to become a light in your community. Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world.

A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid” (Matthew 5:14). Your house should be the house on your street where the light is always on.

How do you shine? Through prayer for your community. Through living a holy and honest life. Through preaching the Gospel to your neighbours.

Through caring for the poor and needy around you. Isaiah said that when you feed the hungry and satisfy the afflicted soul, “then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday” (Isaiah 58:10). Your kindness to your neighbours is part of your light.

Celebrating your light does not mean boasting about yourself. The glory must go to God. When Herod gave a speech and the people shouted, “It is the voice of a god, and not of a man,” Acts 12:23 says, “And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory.” Celebrate God, not yourself.

Also, use wisdom in what you share and when you share it. Hezekiah, after his healing, showed all his treasures to messengers from Babylon.

He was proud to display everything. But Isaiah told him in 2 Kings 20:17 that all those treasures would one day be carried away to Babylon. He shared the wrong things with the wrong people.

Joseph shared his dreams too early with brothers who already hated him, and it made them hate him even more (Genesis 37:5).

So celebrate God’s goodness loudly. Give testimony freely but be wise with sensitive details, personal plans and private matters.

Celebrate the God who gave you the light to shine brighter. Share the testimony that builds faith, not the details that invite envy.

DAILY REFLECTION – ASK YOURSELF

  1. Which area of my life has been in a long blackout?
  2. Am I truly connected to Jesus, the Source of light, or am I depending on spiritual generators?
  3. Is there any sin that has cut the connection between me and God?
  4. Am I making good use of the seasons of light and grace God has given me?
  5. Who in my family or community is still in darkness, and how can I bring them to the light?

WISDOM FOR TODAY

A generator can light one house for a few hours, but the grid can light a whole city. Stop managing with small alternatives. Connect to God, the Source, and let your whole life be powered by Him.

PERSONAL CHALLENGE

Beloved, today I challenge you to think about your street or community. Write down the forms of darkness you see there: crime, poverty, broken homes, idolatry, hopelessness among young people, or anything else. Then commit to pray over your community by name every day this week.

Next, choose one practical way to shine. Visit a neighbour you have never visited. Help someone in need on your street. Invite someone to church. Share the Gospel with one person. And if your own life still has some dark corners, deal with them today, so that your light will shine clearly.

EVANGELISM CHALLENGE

Many people in your community are sitting in darkness without knowing there is a light. Today, go out with the light of Jesus. Share the Gospel with at least one neighbour. Tell them that Jesus is the Light of the world and that He can bring light into their home. If possible, gather a few believers to pray together over your street or area. When one person receives Jesus, a light is switched on, and the whole community gets brighter.

ALTAR CALL

If you have never connected to Jesus, the Light of the world, today is your day. Don’t sit in darkness any longer. Pray this prayer with me:

“Lord Jesus, I have been living in darkness. I confess that I am a sinner. Today, I open the door of my heart to You. Come in and be my Lord and Saviour. Wash me with Your precious Blood. Connect me to Your light. Let me never walk in darkness again. Thank You, Jesus, for bringing me out of darkness into Your marvellous light. Amen.”

If you prayed that prayer, shout it out: UP NEPA! The light has come into your life! Find a Bible believing church and grow in the light.

AFRICAN PROVERB

“The sun does not forget a village just because it is small or ugly.”

Meaning: No matter how small, remote or forgotten a village may be, when the sun rises, its light reaches there too. Men may forget certain communities when sharing electricity, roads and development, but the light of the sun does not discriminate. In the same way, the light of God does not forget anyone. Your family may be small. Your village may be unknown. Your community may have been in darkness for years. But when God arises, His light will reach you too. You are not forgotten.

CLOSING REFLECTION

Beloved, you know the joy of shouting “Up NEPA!” when the light comes back after a long night. Now imagine that kind of joy in the spirit, when God turns on His light over your family, your street and your community.

Make sure you are connected to Jesus, the true Light. Walk as a child of light. Then arise and shine, so that your neighbours can find their way through your light. And rejoice, because God’s light is not like NEPA light. When He turns it on, it stays on.

Stay blessed, shine your light, and stay on fire!
