EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: August 19, 2026 – Be Thankful Always

Thanksgiving is more than saying, “Thank You, Lord,” whenever something good happens. It is a spiritual attitude that recognizes the goodness, faithfulness and mercy of God in every season.

Anyone can praise God after receiving a testimony, but genuine gratitude continues even when the expected answer has yet to appear.

The Bible says, “In every thing give thanks.” It never says that in few things you should give thanks. It never say you should thank God when you are happy or when God has remembered you.

Rather, it teaches us to give thanks in every situation of our life because God has been good, faithful, merciful and dependable. We may have different problems confronting us on daily basis but that should not stop us from showing gratitude to God.

For some people, it is hard to spot the great works of God in their lives. They ignore or look away at the great blessing God is doing in their life and focus on the problem at hand.

But the truth is that, when your heart is not trained properly to appreciate God or people who has helped you, you will see whatever they did to you has little or small. When last have you appreciated or check up on the person that rescued you from that problem few weeks, months or years ago.

It is hard for many people to give what they don’t have or possess. But the real thing is that, you must first build that love before considering helping or appreciating people for their role in your life.

Because with genuine love, it breaks the spirit of fear, doubt, and lack. When you thank others, you also receive your own blessing in return. When someone do you good, it shouldn’t end there. You should also appreciate them and put them in your prayer.

The Bible says, O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever. Many people concentrate so much on what they lack that they forget what God has already given them. They complain about the door that remains closed while ignoring the many doors God has opened.

They complain about unanswered prayers while forgetting the dangers, sicknesses, accidents, attacks and disappointments from which God has delivered them.

Beloved, if God opened your spiritual eyes now to see all the battles He has fought for you, thanksgiving would never leave your mouth. Thanksgiving will become a daily practice for you.

If you don’t know how to thank God properly, just find time to visit someone in the hospital, or look at the life of some people, you will see many reasons to thank God always.

Can you just imagine this? Some arrows were fired at you without your knowledge but never reached you. Some traps were prepared for you but failed. Some people planned evil against you, yet God overturned their counsel.

You may see an ordinary day, but heaven sees countless acts of divine protection and mercy at work in your life. When Jesus faced five thousand hungry people, He took the little food available and gave thanks to God before the multiplication occurred. This is wisdom.

This teaches us that thanksgiving can precede a miracle. It teaches us thanking is a like a ”bribe” we give God to encourage Him to do more.

For how long, are you going to be complaining of problems, start thanking God. What appears too small in your hands can multiply when it is surrendered to God with thanksgiving.

Thank God for life, salvation, family, health, protection, provision and every spiritual blessing. Thank Him for the prayers He has answered and the ones still being processed. Thank Him for the doors He opened and the doors He closed for your protection.

When thanksgiving becomes your lifestyle, peace will replace anxiety, joy will overcome heaviness and your heart will remain sensitive to God’s goodness. (Col 4:2)

Some people wake up every morning and begin to complain. They complain about their family, work, finances, country, health and responsibilities. They magnify everything that is wrong and ignore everything that is working.

Constant complaining can blind a person to the blessings of God and create an atmosphere of discouragement. Gratitude, on the other hand, helps you to recognise God’s presence even in an imperfect situation.

Psalm 103:2–5 says: “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

David had to remind his soul not to forget God’s benefits. This means forgetfulness is one of the enemies of thanksgiving. When people forget where God brought them from, they can begin to treat His blessings as if they achieved everything by their own strength.

The Bible says by strength shall no man prevail. They forget the days of lack after entering abundance. They forget how they prayed for marriage after getting married.

They forget how they prayed for children when the are still trusting God for children. They forget how they searched for employment for years and eventually got it. What you are complaining about today may be the answer to yesterday’s prayer.

In Luke 17, ten lepers cried to Jesus for mercy, and He healed them as they went. However, only one returned to give thanks. Luke 17:15–17 says: “And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?”

Jesus noticed both the one who returned and the nine who did not. God takes note of our gratitude. He also takes note of genuine gratitude.

The grateful leper did not offer silent appreciation from a distance. He returned, glorified God with a loud voice and fell at the feet of Jesus. Thanksgiving should be expressed and not hidden. Tell God that you are grateful. Tell God that you are sorry for not appreciating Him well. Praise Him openly.

Share your testimony when appropriate. Appreciate the people God has used to help you. Appreciate God in the life of your boss for employing you in the organisation. Appreciate God in the life of your partner. Gratitude that remains constant attracts unending blessings.

Thanksgiving is also a powerful spiritual weapon. When Jehoshaphat and Judah faced a great multitude, God instructed them concerning the battle. Second Chronicles 20:21–22 says: “And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.”

Their praise did not mean that the enemies were imaginary. It demonstrated their confidence that God was greater than the opposition.

There are moments when you must stop magnifying the problem, when you must stop praising men too much above God and begin to magnify God correctly. You have prayed, fasted and cried; now sat down somewhere and God begin to flash in your memory of the great things He has done in your life. Don’t ignore it.

He deserves our praise and thanksgiving. Thanksgiving changes your focus from the size of the battle to the greatness of your God. It strengthens faith, restores hope and reminds your soul that the One who helped you before has not abandoned you.

Jesus also demonstrated thanksgiving before miracles. Before feeding the multitude, He gave thanks for the small amount of food available. John 6:11 says: “And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.”

He did not complain that five loaves and two fishes were insufficient. He thanked God for what was available, and multiplication followed.

Beloved, appreciate the little in your hands. Appreciate the people in your life. Stop despising your present level because it does not look like your desired future. Thank God for the small business while trusting Him for expansion. Thank Him for the rented apartment while working towards owning a house.

Thank Him for the few people supporting your ministry while praying for greater influence. Thank Him for the income available while applying wisdom and diligence. What you appreciate and manage faithfully can become the seed of something greater.

Gratitude does not cancel ambition or prevent you from seeking improvement or better life. You can be thankful for where you are today while still working towards where you want to be tomorrow.

Contentment is not laziness. It means refusing to become bitter or dishonour God because your present condition has not yet changed. Philippians 4:11 says: “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.”

Thanksgiving should also be extended to people. Appreciate your spouse, parents, children, friends, workers, pastors and everyone God has used to bless your life. Some people wait until a person dies before speaking about their goodness.

Give people their flowers while they can still see and receive them. A simple message, call or sincere word of appreciation can strengthen someone who feels unnoticed.

However, thanksgiving should never become flattery or manipulation. Genuine appreciation is sincere and does not exaggerate for personal gain. Give honour where it is due, but reserve worship for God alone. People may be channels of help, but God remains the ultimate Source.

Beloved, replace unnecessary complaints with thanksgiving today. Count your blessings one by one. Remember the dangers God has blocked, the sicknesses He healed, the doors He opened, the sins He forgave countless times and the people He sent to support you.

Remember the nights you cried and the mornings He gave you strength to rise again. Even if you are still waiting for some answers, thank Him because your story is not over.

Be thankful when you have much and when you don’t have much. Be thankful when people celebrate you and when your efforts seem unnoticed. Be thankful during open doors and waiting seasons.

Gratitude will preserve your heart from bitterness, pride and discouragement. Let thanksgiving become your lifestyle today, because the God who has kept you until today is worthy of all your praise.

One sign of spiritual maturity is the ability to recognize God’s goodness without waiting for everything in your life to become perfect. Many people have unconsciously trained themselves to thank God only when something spectacular happens. They need a new job before they can testify.

They need money before they can praise God. They need marriage before they can rejoice.  They need a promotion first before they can appreciate God. They need healing before they can say, “God is good.” But if you look carefully at your life, you will discover that every day contains reasons to be thankful.

You slept and woke up. You went out and returned safely. You ate something. Somebody remembered you. You escaped something you did not even recognize as danger. Your heart continued beating while you slept. Your lungs continued working without your supervision.

Beloved, there are miracles that have become so regular that we no longer call them miracles. Sometimes we appreciate extraordinary blessings while ignoring ordinary mercies. If somebody receives a large amount of money unexpectedly, they immediately testify.

But when they receive their monthly salary, they may not see any reason to thank God because they believe, “I worked for it.” Yes, you worked, but who gave you strength to work?

Who gave you the opportunity? Who preserved your health? Who gave you the ability to think, speak, walk, learn, and function? There are people who are qualified but unemployed. There are people who are beautiful, wealthy and prosperous but they are still not married.

There are people with money who cannot enjoy food because of illness. There are people who own beautiful houses but cannot sleep peacefully inside them. Never allow familiarity to make you blind to mercy.

Beloved, thanksgiving begins when you stop believing that everything you have is merely the result of your own strength. Deuteronomy 8:17–18 warned Israel against saying, “My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.” Moses reminded them that God gives power to get wealth. This does not mean effort is unnecessary.

You must work, plan, learn, invest wisely, develop skills, and take responsibility. But after doing all these things, humility recognizes that there are factors beyond human control. You planted, but God gave you life to see the harvest. You prepared for the interview, but you did not control every circumstance surrounding the decision.

You studied, but your mind remained functional. You travelled, but you returned back successfully. Gratitude recognizes grace alongside effort.

Beloved, do not wait until you lose something or everything before discovering its value or finding the need to show gratitude to God. Don’t wait for problem to train you how to thank God. Many people do not appreciate good health until sickness comes. Many do not appreciate the house or apartment they have until lose it.

Many people do not appreciate God for the car they have because they see it as out of trend until that car stopped working. There are people who don’t appreciate their spouse until the relationship is lost. They do not appreciate their parents until they are gone.

They do not appreciate the children God gave them until something happens to them. They do not appreciate peace until conflict enters the home. They do not appreciate the freedom to worship, and to move until circumstances make it difficult. Wisdom appreciates blessings while they are still present.

If your parents are alive and your relationship allows it, appreciate them now. If your spouse has been supportive, say thank you now. If somebody has stood with you during difficult seasons, acknowledge them now. If your children are doing well, appreciate God in their lives now.

If your workers are faithful, recognize them now. If someone has been consistently praying for you, do not assume they know you appreciate them. Tell them. Flowers should not become more plentiful at funerals than appreciation was during life.

Beloved, some people are surrounded by blessings but have trained their minds to see only problems. If ten things go right and one thing goes wrong, the one wrong thing controls their entire day. Somebody receives twenty encouraging messages but one person criticizes them, and they spend the whole night thinking about the criticism.

Their family loves them, but one difficult relationship makes them feel nobody cares. Their business has progressed, but because they have not reached their ultimate goal, they call themselves failures.

A man disappointed them, they conclude all men are the same including the one that helped them in recent seasons.  You must train your heart to recognize goodness. This does not mean ignoring your problems. If something is wrong, address it. If there is injustice, respond appropriately.

If you need improvement, work toward it. If you are hurting, acknowledge the pain. Christianity does not require pretending. But do not allow one problem to swallow every testimony around you.

Beloved, thanksgiving can protect your heart from constant complaining. Complaining can become a habit. A person complains when it rains and complains when the sun becomes hot. They complain when they have too much work and complain when business becomes slow.

They complain when people call them and complain when nobody checks on them. They complain when food is available because it is not their favourite and complain when food is scarce. Eventually, complaining becomes their default language. Be careful.

If you continually practise complaining, even blessings can become irritating because your mind has been trained to search for what is wrong. Israel repeatedly struggled with murmuring in the wilderness.

They had witnessed extraordinary miracles, yet each new challenge seemed to erase the memory of the previous miracle. The Red Sea opened, but soon another difficulty appeared and they complained. God provided manna, but eventually they complained about manna.

Beloved, when gratitude disappears, yesterday’s miracle can become today’s complaint. There was a time they desperately needed food. When manna came, it was divine provision came down on them. After eating it repeatedly, familiarity turned provision into something they despised.

This can happen in our lives. The job you fasted for becomes the job you constantly insult. The spouse you prayed to have becomes the person you take for granted. The child you cried to God to have becomes the child you continually speak harshly to.

The ministry opportunity you once considered a privilege becomes something you approach casually.

Beloved, there is no small testimony when you understand where you started. Perhaps someone else bought a mansion while you finally paid your rent without borrowing. Thank God. Somebody bought a new vehicle while you repaired the old one you already have.

Thank God. Someone’s company employs hundreds while you have just received your first paying customer. Thank God. Somebody graduated with another degree while you finally completed the course you almost abandoned.

Thank God. Someone shared their story with you of God’s faithfulness in their life. Thank God. Beloved, gratitude protects the heart from unhealthy comparison. One major reason people become ungrateful these days is because they are constantly measuring their lives against other people’s lives and expectations.

You were happy with your car until your friend bought a more expensive one. You were grateful for your house until you visited someone’s else larger house. You celebrated your business in good spirit until you saw somebody else’s turnover online.

You appreciated your marriage until social media gave you reasons to condemn your spouse. You appreciated your progress until you saw somebody moving faster and making progress.

ALTAR CALL

ALTAR CALL: If you want to give your life to Christ; you want your sins forgiven; you want to become a child of God; you want to experience the realities of new birth; you want to make heaven; Or you were once saved and fell along the line, and now you want to rededicate your life to Christ… Then pray this short prayer of Faith Say it loud and mean it:

Lord Jesus, I surrender my life to you today. Forgive me my sins, wash me with your blood. I believe you died for me, on the third day you rose again that I may be justified. Right now, I believe that my sins are forgiven; I’m justified by your blood; I’m born-again; I’m saved; I’m a child of God; I’m free from the power of sin to serve the living God. Thank you Jesus for receiving me; thank you Jesus for restoring me; thank you Jesus for saving me

Thank God for the salvation of your soul. I congratulate you for the best decision of your life. If you just prayed the prayer of salvation online please send your testimonies and prayer request to info@ejom.org, +234 (809) 982-8623. To sow a seed, kindly go to our donation page. God bless you.
