After Deliverance, What Next?

Opening Scriptures

Matthew 12:43–45: “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.”

John 8:36 (KJV)

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

Galatians 5:1 (KJV)

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”

Memory Verse

John 5:14 (KJV)

“Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.”

EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: August 15, 2026 – After Deliverance, What Next?

Beloved, one of the greatest mistakes a person can make after experiencing deliverance is to believe that because the battle has been won, there is nothing else to do.

Many people have experienced freedom from a particular bondage, sinful habit, destructive lifestyle, fear, oppression, or negative pattern, but after some time they found themselves returning to the same Egypt God brought them out from.

The problem is not always that nothing happened during their deliverance; sometimes they failed to guard the freedom they received. Deliverance should lead to a new way of living.

Galatians 5:1 says, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”

Notice that the Bible did not only say that Christ has made us free; it also says, “Stand fast.” This means there is a responsibility attached to freedom. You must stand in it, protect it, value it, and refuse to become entangled again.

Many people fall back into their Egypt after deliverance because they allow little things to gradually corrupt their faith and pollute the spiritual atmosphere they have built around their lives.

It may begin with something that appears harmless. A person who has been delivered from sexual immorality begins communicating secretly again with someone connected to the former lifestyle.

Someone who has overcome pornography begins entertaining sexually provocative materials because they say, “I am only looking.”

Someone who has been delivered from drunkenness begins spending unnecessary time in an environment where alcohol and old habits are constantly celebrated or tolerated.

Someone who has overcome bitterness begins replaying old offences and discussing them repeatedly until anger returns in them. Someone whose prayer life became strong during a season of battle gradually stops praying because everything now appears peaceful.

Beloved, the major falls in life often begin with small compromises. What you tolerate little by little can eventually become strong enough to control you again.

Look at the children of Israel. God delivered them from Egypt with a mighty hand. Pharaoh could not hold them. The Red Sea could not stop them. Their enemies were defeated before their eyes. Yet whenever hardship came in the wilderness, they began remembering Egypt.

They started talking about what they ate there and wishing they could return. This reveals something important: You can physically leave Egypt while Egypt remains in your mind.

God may remove you from an old environment, but if your thinking remains unchanged, you may eventually go back to where God has delivered you from.

You may leave an unhealthy relationship but continue emotionally feeding the memories. You may stop a sinful habit but continue entertaining the thoughts that produced it. You may experience freedom from fear but continue consuming everything that strengthens fear.

Deliverance must therefore be followed by the renewing of the mind. Romans 12:2 says, “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Beloved, if your mind is not renewed after deliverance, your old thinking can lead you back to your old lifestyle.

You must learn to think differently. If God delivered you from poverty-producing habits, learn financial discipline. If God delivered you from a destructive relationship, learn to keep healthy boundaries and be mindful of the kind of relationship you involve yourself into.

If God helped you overcome uncontrolled anger, learn to be patience and maintain healthy communication. If you have come out of addiction, identify your triggers (limitations) and determine not to go back again.

Beloved, do not return to the place where your bondage was continually fed on and assume that because you have prayed, you cannot fall again. There is a difference between faith and presumption. Joseph did not remain in the room with Potiphar’s wife trying to prove how spiritually strong he was.

Genesis 39:12 says that Joseph “fled, and got him out.” Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is run. Run from that conversation. Run from that secret relationship.

Run from being alone with a man or woman. Run from that environment. Run from the person continually encouraging you to compromise.

Run from anything that repeatedly weakens your convictions. Do not tempt yourself and do not deliberately stand beside the fire and pray that your clothes will not smell of smoke.

One major key to maintaining deliverance is consistent prayer. Many people become prayer warriors when trouble comes but gradually abandon prayer when peace returns.

During the battle, they wake at midnight. They fast. They study Scripture. They attend fellowship. They cry to God. After the testimony comes, they suddenly become too busy to pray.

Beloved, If prayer was important while you were fighting, prayer remains important after you have won. Prayer should not merely be an emergency telephone number; it should be your fellowship with God.

Jesus said in Matthew 26:41, “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation.” Prayer is not only meant for coming out of trouble; but prayer also helps keep you from entering trouble or from repeating your mistake.

Another important thing after deliverance is the Word of God. You cannot maintain spiritual strength while continually starving yourself spiritually. Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

Fill your mind with Scripture. Study what God says about your identity, holiness, forgiveness, wisdom, self-control, faith, relationships, money, temptation, and spiritual warfare.

When old thoughts return, you need the word of God to silence it. When condemnation tells you that you have not really changed, you need the word of God to cage the voice.

Beloved, another way to maintain your deliverance is to close every door connected to the old bondage. Some people want freedom while keeping souvenirs from Egypt. They want deliverance from an ungodly relationship but keep communicating secretly with the person.

They want freedom from pornography but refuse to remove materials and access that continually tempt them. They want freedom from gambling but they keep the apps and remain in groups that continually advertise sins to them.

They want freedom from gossip but spend hours with people whose primary conversation is talking about other people’s affairs. They want financial stability but refuse to change spending habits.

Beloved, you cannot keep feeding what you are asking God to starve. Romans 13:14 says, “Make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” This means do not deliberately create the conditions in which your weakness can flourish. Know yourself. Know your triggers. Know where you are vulnerable.

There are places another believer may go without difficulty that you personally should avoid because of your history. There are conversations another person may handle that you should not entertain. Wisdom does not ask, “How close can I get to my former bondage without falling?” Wisdom asks, “How far can I stay from what almost destroyed me?”

Beloved, you must also change your association where necessary. First Corinthians 15:33 says, “Evil communications corrupt good manners.” Some people pray for deliverance but return immediately to the same group that trained them in the behaviour from which they were delivered.

They return to the same conversations, same pressure, same ungodly advice, and same environment. After a while, their convictions become weak again. This does not mean you should hate people or behave as though you are better than them.

But it simply means you must recognize influence and respect people. Everybody should be loved, but everybody should not have the same access to your heart and decisions.

One of the greatest enemies after deliverance is carelessness. When people are fighting serious battles, they can pray for hours. They can wake up at midnight. They can fast. They can read Scripture.

They can attend fellowship consistently. But immediately they begin feeling better, they relax spiritually. The very disciplines that helped strengthen them are gradually abandoned.

This is dangerous because victory should produce gratitude and deeper commitment, not spiritual laziness. Jesus gave a serious warning in Matthew 12:43–45. He described an unclean spirit leaving a person and later returning to inspect its former habitation. It finds the house “empty, swept, and garnished.”

The problem was not simply that the house was clean; the house was empty. Nothing stronger had taken possession of the space.

After deliverance, you must also replace the old pattern with a new pattern. This is where Matthew 12:43–45 becomes very important. Jesus spoke of an unclean spirit leaving and later returning to find the house empty. Beloved, do not remain empty after deliverance. If you remove something destructive, put something healthy and godly in its place.

If you stop spending your nights consuming pornography or masturbation, establish a better evening routine. If you leave an unhealthy relationship, build healthy friendships and Christian fellowship. If you stop drinking, do not spend every weekend sitting alone thinking about drinking; develop healthy activities and supportive relationships.

If you stop gossiping, deliberately begin speaking words that encourage people. If you stop wasteful spending, start budgeting. If you overcome laziness, establish routines. Something good must replace what has been removed.

This is why deliverance can be understood not only as a moment but also as a process of learning to walk consistently in freedom. There may be moments when God intervenes dramatically, and there may also be areas where maintaining that freedom requires continued growth, discipline, accountability, prayer, and changed behaviour.

You don’t have to be discouraged because you still need to be watchful after experiencing victory. A person released from prison must still learn how to live outside the prison.

Beloved, do not confuse temptation with defeat. After deliverance, the old temptation may try to knock again. You may suddenly remember the old lifestyle. You may have a dream connected to your past. Someone you have not spoken to for months may contact you. An old desire may appear during a weak moment.

This does not automatically mean you have lost your deliverance. Temptation is not the same thing as surrender. What matters is your response. You don’t have to remain panic and say, “Everything has returned.” Instead, pray, stand on God’s Word, use your boundaries, contact a trustworthy person if necessary, and refuse to feed the temptation.

The enemy often uses discouragement after a setback. A person has remained free from a destructive habit for months and then falls once. Immediately the thought comes, “You see, nothing changed. You are still the same person.” Beloved, do not allow one fall to become permission for complete surrender.

Repent sincerely, examine what led to the fall, strengthen the weak area, seek help where necessary, and continue walking. Proverbs 24:16 says, “For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again.” The goal is not to excuse sin; the goal is to refuse hopelessness. Learn from the fall so that the same doorway is not left open.

Another important key is accountability. There are battles that become stronger in secrecy. You may need a mature Christian, pastor, counsellor, mentor, spouse, or other trustworthy person who can encourage you and ask difficult questions.

If the issue involves addiction, compulsive behaviour, trauma, or another serious problem, appropriate professional support may also be important.

There is no contradiction between prayer and responsible help. God can use spiritual disciplines, wise counsel, professional support, medical treatment where appropriate, and healthy community as part of a person’s restoration.

Beloved, after deliverance, guard your testimony with humility. Do not begin to think, “I can never fall again.” First Corinthians 10:12 says, “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” Confidence should be in Christ, not in your ability to resist everything by yourself.

The moment you become proud, you may begin removing the boundaries that helped protect you. You start saying, “I can handle it now.” “I can go there now.” “I can talk to that person now.” “It cannot affect me anymore.” Be careful. Maturity is not proven by unnecessarily exposing yourself to temptation.

You must also guard the atmosphere around your life. What are you continually watching? What are you listening to? What conversations dominate your day? What kind of people influence you? What occupies your thoughts before you sleep? What do you repeatedly consume on social media?

The things you continually allow into your mind can either strengthen your convictions or gradually weaken them. Philippians 4:8 tells believers to think upon things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report. Do not allow small compromises to pollute an atmosphere you fought hard to rebuild.

Beloved, after deliverance, do not spend your entire life searching for another deliverance programme. Sometimes people become dependent on moving from one deliverance minister to another without developing spiritual maturity themselves.

Ministers can pray with you, counsel you, teach you, and support you, but nobody can live your Christian life for you. You must pray. You must study Scripture. You must resist temptation.

You must make wise choices. You must establish boundaries. You must forgive. You must develop character. You must remain in fellowship. You must learn to stand in the liberty Christ has given you.

Another important thing is to deal with the practical issues that contributed to the former problem. If financial irresponsibility repeatedly created crises, develop financial discipline. If poor communication damaged your marriage, learn healthier communication. If anger destroyed relationships, work seriously on self-control.

If loneliness continually pushed you toward unhealthy relationships, develop healthy lifestyle. If stress continually triggered destructive behaviour, learn healthier ways of managing stress.

If trauma or emotional wounds contribute to repeated behaviour, seek appropriate support. Prayer is powerful, but prayer should lead you toward truth and responsible action.

Beloved, remember this: the devil does not need to drag you back to Egypt if he can make you miss Egypt. Once your heart begins longing for what God brought you out from, returning becomes much easier. Therefore, remind yourself regularly why you left.

Remember the season of tears. Remember the years you have been in that bondage. Remember the season of shame. Remember the confusion. Remember the consequences. Remember how desperately you prayed for freedom.

Israel said they remembered the food of Egypt, but Egypt was also the place where they cried because of bondage. Do not remember only the onions and forget the chains. Do not remember only the pleasure and forget the pain.

Do not remember only the attention and forget the manipulation. Do not remember only the excitement and forget the guilt. Do not remember only what the habit gave temporarily and forget what it took permanently.

Beloved, if God has delivered you, move forward. Do not build your identity around what you were delivered from. You are more than your former addiction. You are more than your former relationship. You are more than your past mistakes. You are more than yesterday’s bondage.

Let your testimony become the foundation for a new season of maturity rather than an excuse to keep discussing darkness forever. Colossians 1:13 says God “hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.” Your focus should increasingly be upon the kingdom you have entered, not merely the bondage you escaped.

After deliverance, beloved, what next? Stay close to God. Guard your freedom. Renew your mind. Close all old doors. Establish boundaries. Change destructive associations.

Fill yourself with the word of God. Maintain a consistent prayer life. Remain in healthy fellowship. Develop accountability. Replace old patterns with godly ones. Deal with your character. Address practical problems. Refuse unnecessary exposure to temptation. Rise quickly if you stumble. Keep growing in Christ.

And do not allow a little compromise to destroy a great testimony. Do not allow five minutes of pleasure to reopen a door you spent years praying to close. Do not allow loneliness to return you to Egypt.

Do not allow prosperity to make you forget the God you cried to during adversity. Do not allow pride to make you remove the boundaries that helped you stand. Your deliverance is precious; guard it.

God has brought you out so that you can move forward, not so that you can keep returning to Egypt. Therefore, stand fast in your liberty. Let yesterday’s bondage remain yesterday’s bondage. Let the door remain closed. Let Egypt remain behind you. Keep your eyes upon Christ and continue moving forward.

Prophetic Declaration

I declare over your life today: you shall not return to the Egypt from which God has delivered you. Every chain that has been broken shall remain broken, and every door God has helped you to close shall remain closed, in the name of Jesus.

You shall not return to old bondage, destructive habits, ungodly relationships, fear, bitterness, sexual immorality, addiction, prayerlessness, or any lifestyle that once stole your peace. The grace to stand firm in your freedom is released upon you today.

I declare that the mistakes of yesterday shall become wisdom for tomorrow. Your former battles shall not become your permanent identity. What God has brought you through shall become a testimony of His grace, in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Personal Challenge

Today, examine your life sincerely and ask yourself: “Since God delivered me, what have I done to protect my freedom?” Have you returned to any relationship, environment, conversation, website, habit, or lifestyle that once contributed to your bondage? Have you become less prayerful because the problem has disappeared? Have you stopped studying the Word because you now feel comfortable? Are you gradually reopening doors you once prayed desperately for God to close? Do not wait until a small compromise becomes another stronghold.

Identify one old door that must remain permanently closed and one new godly habit that must become stronger in your life. If you need to end an unhealthy conversation, do it. If you need stronger boundaries, establish them. If your prayer life has become weak, rebuild it. If you have neglected Scripture, return to it. If you need accountability or appropriate help, seek it. If an old habit is beginning to return, confront it immediately rather than hiding it.

Your challenge today is simple: Do not return to Egypt. Guard what God has given you. Close the old doors, strengthen the new patterns, stay close to Christ, and protect your freedom.
