EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: June 29, 2026 – Stay Spiritually Alert

One of the greatest dangers facing believers today is spiritual carelessness. Many people are physically active but spiritually inactive. They wake up every morning thinking about work, business, school, or family responsibilities, but they spend little or no time strengthening their relationship with God. A person may appear successful outwardly while gradually becoming spiritually weak within.

Spiritual alertness begins with a healthy prayer life. Prayer keeps the believer connected to God and sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit. When prayer becomes irregular, spiritual sensitivity begins to decline, giving the enemy an opportunity to attack. Staying spiritually alert sharpens your awareness of your environment, the people around you, and the spiritual undercurrents of daily life.

In this world, we must remain spiritually vigilant. We need to know who and what we are dealing with. The gift of discernment allows us to distinguish between right and wrong, good and bad. A person who struggles to discern the true nature of their relationships exposes themselves to unnecessary trouble. This is why Jesus repeatedly instructed His disciples to watch and pray.

The life of Nehemiah teaches us the importance of remaining alert. While rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, his enemies constantly planned to stop the work. Nehemiah did not become careless just because progress had begun. Instead, those who carried materials did their work with one hand while holding a weapon with the other, while the builders wore swords at their sides as they labored.

They understood that success does not remove the need for vigilance. As God begins to bless you, remain watchful, because blessings often attract opposition. Staying spiritually alert also requires feeding regularly on the Word of God. The Bible is more than a book of promises; it is God’s manual for victorious living. It exposes deception, corrects wrong thinking, strengthens faith, and equips believers to overcome temptation.

A Christian who neglects the Scriptures becomes spiritually weak and vulnerable to false teachings and worldly influences. Another area that requires vigilance is our thought life. Every battle does not begin physically; many battles begin in the mind. The enemy often plants fear, doubt, discouragement, bitterness, lust, pride, or unbelief before they eventually influence a person’s actions.

A spiritually alert believer does not entertain every thought that enters the mind. He measures every thought against the Word of God and rejects whatever does not glorify Christ. Believers must also remain alert concerning the company they keep. Relationships have the power to strengthen or weaken our walk with God.

Wrong friendships can gradually draw a person away from prayer, holiness, and obedience. Many people did not suddenly backslide; they slowly drifted away because they surrounded themselves with people who had no passion for God. It’s important you choose companions who encourage your spiritual growth rather than those who weaken your convictions.

Sadly, not everyone remains spiritually alert. Samson is a tragic example of someone who gradually became careless. God gave him extraordinary strength, yet he failed to guard his spiritual life. He became comfortable with compromise, ignored repeated warnings, and ultimately revealed the secret of his strength. When he awoke to face the enemy’s attack, he did not realize that the Lord had departed from him.

It’s unfortunate that Samson’s downfall did not happen overnight; it began with gradually, he allowed himself to be tempted by devil. Spiritual alertness also means paying attention to the warnings God gives you. It means to be spiritually discerning. Sometimes God speaks to us through His Word to alert us of something. Sometimes He uses wise counsel, circumstances, conviction by the Holy Spirit, or even dreams to get our attention.

When God warns you about a relationship, a habit, a business decision, or a particular direction, do not ignore His voice. Whe He warns you about some people, do not take it granted. When God warns you about a business, or environment, take the warnings seriously. Many people have regretting for taking steps or decisions they ought not to have taken.

Spiritual alertness is not only about defending yourself against the enemy; it is also about recognizing what God is doing in your life. Being spiritual aler is very important because it makes you be conscious of things. The Bible says, be sober, be vigilant because your enemy is seeking to attack you. When the Holy Spirit is telling you to be vigilant, He wants you to look at something spiritually.

Being spiritual alert does not mean you must have an extra power. It means you need to br spiritually watchful and observe some people or things that may be posing as threat or obstacle to you. Many people have missed their divine opportunities because they did not pay attention to it. If you are not spiritually alert, how would you know when God is speaking to you?

God may be opening a door, preparing a helper, or leading them in a new direction, but if you don’t discern it, you may not recognize the work of the Holy Spirit in your life. Being spiritually active tells you that God has just finished fighting your battles and that you need to thank God. Being spiritually active empowers you to know when good or things are coming.

If you are not spiritually active, how would you know the people that are for you and those against you? Many people have bad encounter in their dreams and when they would wake up, they will forget everything in that revelation. This means that the devil has shut down the dream memory of the person. Being physically blind does not stop a person from being spiritually active.

There are seasons when God calls His children to pray for clarity and understanding. There are times when He prompts you to fast, study His Word more deeply, reconcile with someone, or step out in faith. A spiritually alert person recognizes these promptings and responds quickly. But those who are not spiritually alert would not be able to get the message.

Another sign of spiritual alertness is the ability to discern the hidden motives of others. When a wicked person plots against you, the Holy Spirit can expose their secret intentions long before their plans ever set into motion. The wicked cannot outmaneuver or defeat the righteous, because Scripture assures us that if God is for us, no power can successfully stand against us.

Many believers have entered toxic relationships because they ignored God’s early warnings. Some have rented the wrong apartments because they failed to consult God, who reveals hidden things. Many women have married the wrong men, while many men have realized that they have spent years with the wrong woman. The ultimate danger of spiritual carelessness is that it leaves a believer completely vulnerable to costly mistakes and avoidable errors.

Spiritual alertness serves as a shield against these costly mistakes. Beyond your physical surroundings, you must constantly monitor your spiritual atmosphere. If you notice your desire to pray is fading, do not ignore it. If reading Scripture has become difficult, do not excuse it. If sin no longer troubles your conscience, something is deeply wrong.

When worldly pleasures displace your hunger for God’s presence, it is an urgent signal to return to the Lord. Spiritual decay rarely happens overnight; it begins with tiny compromises that are tolerated until they become massive strongholds. When a person has lost the gift of discernment, it becomes very easy for the enemy to disguised as a true friend.

One of the plans of the enemy is that he fills the lives of many with so many activities that they will disconnect them from God. These people become busy but spiritually empty. They are active in many things but inactive in their relationship with Christ. They find it hard to see opportunities and danger. A believer must never allow busyness to replace their intimacy with God.

Beloved, guard your spiritual life as you would guard a valuable treasure. Protect your prayer altar and gift. Protect your time with God. Protect your convictions. Protect your relationship with the Holy Spirit. The battles you won in your prayers can become revelation tomorrow. Those who remain spiritually alert will be better prepared to recognize God’s voice, overcome temptation quickly, resist deception, and walk confidently in His perfect will.

Stay alert and be prayerful. Do not let situations meet you unaware or unprepared. The devil may deceive you, manipulate you, or micmic the voice of the Holy Spirit in your life, but if you are spriitually alert, they won’t able to achieve that. A spiritually watchful person is careful not to speak words of fear, is careful not to embark on a journey without seeking God’s face, is careful not to make mistakes.

Finally, remember that staying spiritually alert is not a one-day event but a daily commitment. Every morning, choose to walk with God. Every evening, examine your heart before Him. Stay close to His Word, remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit, and refuse to allow anything to separate you from His presence. Those who stay spiritually awake are better prepared to recognize danger, embrace God’s opportunities, and fulfill the purpose than those who are not.

Prophetic Declaration

In the name of Jesus Christ, I declare that your spiritual eyes shall remain open and your heart shall remain sensitive to the voice of God. May every spirit of slumber, carelessness, lukewarmness, and distraction assigned against your spiritual life be consumed by the fire of the Holy Ghost.

I decree that you will not miss divine warnings. God will reveal hidden dangers before they come near you, and every trap set against your destiny shall be exposed and destroyed.

I declare that the Holy Spirit will sharpen your discernment. You shall not be deceived by false appearances, lying spirits, or the counsel of the wicked. Every power waiting for you to become spiritually weak before attacking you shall be disappointed, in the mighty name of Jesus.

I prophesy that your prayer altar will receive fresh fire. Your hunger for God’s Word shall increase, and your love for His presence shall never grow cold. May the Lord surround you with His angels. Every arrow fired against your health, family, finances, ministry, marriage, and destiny shall return to its sender.

Daily Reflection

Ask yourself:

  • Am I spiritually alert, or have I become careless in my walk with God?
  • Is my prayer life growing stronger or gradually becoming weaker?
  • Have I been sensitive to the voice and warnings of the Holy Spirit, or have I ignored His promptings?
  • Is there any habit, relationship, or distraction that is weakening my spiritual life?
  • What practical steps will I take today to remain spiritually watchful and closer to God?
