EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: June 17, 2026 – The Power of a Good Name

Have you find out the meaning of your name? Have you also found why people called you that nickname. No doubt, there is power in your name. The name a person bears has spiritual connection either good or bad. A name has the power to bring fortune or bad luck to a man.

Some people bears name that work well with their destiny. While some bears name that attracts battles to them. Jacob was given a name that affected his life until he met with the angel of the Lord. His name made him to misbehave. Jacob means swindler and deceiver.

One day, Jacob was asleep and in his dream, he had an encounter with the angel of Lord and he refused to let the angel go until the angel asked for his name and he said Jacob. Then the angel said from today, your name would no longer be Jacob but Israel. And that was how Jacob’s destiny changed.

God takes names very seriously. In Genesis 17:5 He changed Abram’s name to Abraham, then in Genesis 17:15 He changed Sarai’s name to Sarah.God changed their names when He wanted to promote them.

He gave them new names that reflected what He wanted to make out of them. This teaches us that if we want to go to a new level, we should begin to bear the name for that level.

Find out the meaning of your name, and If you notice a name does not work with your glory, then change it. Some people, because of the circumstances they were born into, their parents gave them wrong names that are holding back their progress in life.

Take, for example, Jabez in the Bible. He was born into affliction, his mother gave birth to him in sorrow and she called him Jabez, meaning son of sorrow. And he grew up to know that his name was affecting his destiny, then he called upon God to change his name, and God answered him and his life became better.

Name is very important. Everything God created has a name. God gave Adam the task to name the animals in the garden. One of the things you should not underestimate is the power of a good name. A good name reveals the new identity of a person. The name of a person carries his destiny, his purpose, his background, his greatness.

A good name is one of the few things money cannot buy. You can buy a house, but you cannot buy integrity. You can buy expensive clothes, but you cannot buy respect. You can buy influence, but you cannot buy genuine trust. These are things that are earned over time through consistent character and godly living.

Many people spend years building businesses, careers, and ministries, but neglect the importance of building character. The truth is that character is the foundation upon which every lasting success stands. When the foundation is weak, the structure will eventually collapse no matter how impressive it appears on the outside.

The power of a good name has a lot of benefits. The worth of a good name is more than money. Good name can stay for years, but wealth can disappear. A good name is not just a name, it involves honesty, accountability, kindness, hard work, respectful, loyalty, etc. A good name has the signature of heaven upon it.

When people wants to favour a person, their good names usually influences them to help them. A person with good name does not involve himself in dirty business, lies, or commit evil but righteousness. This is why believers must guard their names carefully.

We must understand that good name is not built overnight. It takes years to build a good name and only takes a moments to destroy it. People doesn’t care whether you came from a poor family or not, but once you have good names you have kept over times through hardwork, faithfulness and loyalty, they will be forced to be around you.

Some people have money, but have no integrity. Some have wealth but no humility. Some are beautiful but no good character.  Every believer should strive to leave behind a legacy of godly character. A good name is a gift to the family and the country. Most importantly, a good name brings glory to God. A good name creates confidence. It assures people that our words can be trusted and our actions can be relied upon.

One act of dishonesty can create doubt and fear in the minds of people about us. The story of Dorcas (also known as Tabitha) is recorded in Acts 9:36–43. A devoted disciple in the coastal city of Joppa, her sudden death brought immense grief. The widows she faithfully served showed the Apostle Peter the garments she made as a testament to her legacy of charity.

When your name is mentioned in the lip of people, what comes to people’s mind? Do they think of honesty or lies? Do they think of faithfulmness? Do they think of intergity, etc. One reason God blesses people with a good reputation is because He knows they will represent Him well. As Christians, we are ambassadors of Christ.

Our lifestyle should reflect the character of the God we serve. Sadly, some people protect their wealth more than they protect their reputation. They are careful with money but careless with character. A damaged reputation may take years to rebuild. Your name should represent something positive wherever it is mentioned.

When your employer hears your name, what comes to mind? When your neighbours hear your name, what comes to mind? When your fellow believers hear your name, what comes to mind? When your family hears your name, what comes to mind? Many people want the rewards of a good name, but they are unwilling to pay the price required to build it.

A good name also attracts favour. There are times when people receive help not because they asked for it, but because others have heard positive things about them. Employers hire them, leaders recommend them, and friends stand by them because their conduct has earned respect. When your name is associated with integrity, people are willing to stake their own reputation on your behalf.

Another blessing of a good name is that it becomes a shield during difficult times. Everyone makes mistakes, and everyone faces accusations at one point or another. However, when a person has consistently lived uprightly over time, people are less likely to believe false reports against them. Their years of good conduct become a defense.

Those who know them will often say, “He can never do such a thing,” or “He is a calm and easy going person.”A good name is also an inheritance that can bless future generations. Children often benefit from the reputation of their parents. When a father or mother is known for honesty, kindness, faithfulness, and godliness, people tend to extend that hands of respect to their children.

Thereafter when the person has left this world, the memory of their good works continues to speak. Sadly, many people destroy their names for temporary gain. Some compromise their standard because of corruption. A single act of dishonesty, betrayal, corruption, or immorality can damage a reputation that took years to build.  This is why believers must guard their character carefully.

Every decision we make is either strengthening or spoiling our reputation before God and men. The power of a good name becomes even more evident when we look at how people respond to it. There are individuals whose names alone command respect wherever they go. Before they arrive, people are already willing to listen to them because their reputation has gone ahead of them.

They may not be the richest or most influential people in society, but their consistent character has made them valuable. People will associate something with your name in their mind. They may tag your name with deceit, maniplative, dishonest, unreliable, drunkard, faithful, unreliable, humble, proud, kind or harsh.  These kinds of people have picked one or two things about you.

There is a blessing that comes when a child hears people speak well of his parents. There is a confidence that comes when a family name is associated with honesty, kindnessm intelligent, integrity, and good character. A person may deceive people for a short period, but he can never deceive God. God sees what happens behind closed doors.

He sees how we handle money. He sees how we treat people. He sees whether our words match our actions. He sees whether we are the same person in public and in private. This is why a good name begins with the fear of God. When a person fears God, he becomes careful with his actions. He understands that his reputation is not only connected to himself but also to the God he represents.

Think about a bank. People deposit their money because they trust the institution. But the moment confidence is lost, customers begin to withdraw their money from the bank. In the same way, people invest their trust in those who have built a good reputation for themselves. Once that trust is broken, restoring it can take years. This is why believers must avoid anything that can damage their credibility.

A moment of compromise can destroy years of trust. One careless decision or mistake can scatter years of hard work and achievement. The enemy understands the value of a good name. That is why he often tempts people in areas that can destroy their reputation. He knows that if he can damage a person’s character, he can as well weaken that person’s influence.

A good name also gives a person influence without force. People willingly follow those they respect. They listen to their advice, seek their counsel, and value their opinions. This kind of influence cannot be bought with money. It is earned through years of honesty, humility, sacrifice, and godly living. Many people desire honour, but honour follows character.

If you want people to trust you tomorrow, you must be trustworthy today. If you want your words to carry weight in the future, your actions must be disciplined now. Every promise you keep, every truth you tell, and every act of kindness you show is adding value to your name. The sad reality is that some people focus more on protecting their image than their character.

Your image is what people see on the outside, but character is who you are when nobody is watching you. A person may succeed in deceiving people for a season, but eventually the truth will reveal itself. A good name is not created through public appearances; it is created through private integrity. As believers, our names should remind people of Christ.

When people hear our names, they should remember our kindness, honesty, humility, faithfulness, and love for God. Our lives should become living testimonies that point others toward the Lord. The greatest compliment a believer can receive is for people to see the character of Christ reflected in them. One reason some people still struggling to maintain a good name is because they want instant success.

They are willing to take shortcuts, tell lies, manipulate others, or engage in dishonest practices to get ahead. What they fail to understand is that every dishonest gain weakens the foundation of their reputation. Success built without integrity don’t last long. A good name requires sacrifice. Sometimes you will lose opportunities because you refuse to compromise.

Sometimes you will be misunderstood because you choose to stand for what is right. Sometimes you may even suffer temporarily because of your convictions. Yet in the long run, integrity always pays greater dividends than compromise. Parents should also understand the importance of leaving behind a good name for their children.

An inheritance is not only money, land, or property they can give their children. One of the greatest gifts a parent can leave is a reputation of godliness, honesty, and honour. Children often benefit from the respect their parents earned through years of upright living. Guard your name carefully. Let your good name continue to speak for you even when you have departed.

One day, people may forget how much money you made, the car you drove, or the house you lived in. But they will surely remember how you treated others, how you handled responsibility, and whether your life reflected godly character or not.  Make it your goal today that whenever your name is mentioned, people will have reasons to thank God for the impact your life has made in their lives.

Prophetic Declaration

I decree that God shall preserve your testimony and reputation. Every plan of the enemy to tarnish your name shall fail. The Lord shall make you a person of integrity, favour, and godly character. Your life shall bring honor to God, and your good name shall open doors of blessing, opportunity, and divine favour, in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
