Follow The Leading Of The Holy Spirit – EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: October 4, 2026
Beloved, one of the greatest privileges of being a child of God is having the Holy Spirit as your Guide. Every day, life brings decisions before us: decisions about marriage, career, business, ministry, relationships, and so many other things.
Human knowledge is good, but it has its limits. You can only see today; you cannot see tomorrow. But the Holy Spirit sees what you cannot see. He knows the end of every road before you step on it. That is why, in everything you do, you must make sure you are led by the Spirit of God.
When the Spirit of God is leading you, you will not walk into avoidable mistakes. When the Spirit of God is leading you, He covers you with safety and protection. When the Spirit of God is leading you, you will do the right thing at the right time.
God has promised, “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye” (Psalm 32:8). Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).
Because He is the way, He will show you the right road to take. Because He is the truth, He will tell you the truth about your life and your journey. Because He is the life, He will give you life and keep you alive.
You cannot hide from Him. “Whither shall I go from thy spirit?” (Psalm 139:7). Even when you feel lost and confused, if you will turn to Him, He will still bring you through the gate of your salvation.
And understand this: no man can give you a solution unless God permits it. “A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven” (John 3:27). Not everything that looks good is God’s choice for you.
There are things that look beautiful to our eyes, but in the eyes of God, they are traps dressed in fine clothes. God warned Adam in the garden: “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Genesis 2:17).
Yet when the serpent came, the woman “saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes” (Genesis 3:6). It looked good, but it was death. What looks good is not always what is good.
It is one thing for God to warn you; it is another thing for you to obey. God is not looking for people who only hear; He is looking for people who act on what He says. “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22).
If you become an obedient child of God, one who acts promptly on His instructions, you will walk in the love and favour of Christ. Jesus said, “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him” (John 14:21).
Let me tell you the truth. Many people have lied about the Holy Spirit to cover their own choices. They say, “The Holy Spirit told me to marry this man,” or “The Holy Spirit told me to marry this woman,” when it was their flesh that chose.
Some say the Holy Spirit asked them to take a second wife because of the issue of children. Some say the Holy Spirit told them to take that job, or they blame their pastor for pushing them into a wrong move.
Beloved, be careful. Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Ghost, and it cost them their lives (Acts 5:3). Do not use the name of the Holy Spirit to approve what your flesh desires.
Remember, many voices speak to the mind of man at the same time. “There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world” (1 Corinthians 14:10). There is the voice of God, there is the voice of Satan, and there is the voice of your own heart and desires.
You must learn to recognise each of them. “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God” (1 John 4:1). Even when your pastor or a prophet confirms something to you, you still need the Holy Spirit to bear witness in your own spirit.
Remember the young prophet in 1 Kings 13. God gave him a clear instruction, but an old prophet came and said, “I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD.”
The Bible says, “But he lied unto him” (1 Kings 13:18). The young prophet believed the old man instead of the word God had given him, and he lost his life on the way. It is not every food that someone serves you that you must eat. Sometimes wisdom says, “Pause, and leave it.”
The reason many people are still stuck where they are today is that a wrong voice misled them. Some were shocked when the friends they trusted betrayed them with false information.
“Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me” (Psalm 41:9). Not everything people tell you is genuine. “The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going” (Proverbs 14:15).
So find time to hear from God. Let God lead you. Let God confirm a matter to you before you act on it. Even when you want to give something to someone, ask God first.
Let Him tell you what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5–6).
Beloved, some people have ended up in prison because of the food or drink they served to others was alleged to have caused death. Some have landed in deep trouble because of one careless word, one wrong visitor, or one secret affair. So be careful what you say.
Be careful whom you accommodate in your house. Be careful whom you follow, lest they lead you down the wrong path. Be careful of secret affairs, for “be sure your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23).
Beloved, how then do you know when it is truly the Holy Spirit speaking? Let me open your understanding. The voice of the Holy Spirit will always agree with the Word of God. The Spirit who wrote the Bible will never tell you to do what the Bible forbids.
If a voice tells you to steal, to lie, to leave your lawful spouse for another, to cheat in business, or to take what does not belong to you, that voice is not from God, no matter how sweet it sounds. Even Satan can come as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14).
That is why you must hide the Word in your heart. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11). The more of the Word you carry, the faster you will recognise a false voice.
The voice of the Holy Spirit brings peace, even when the instruction is difficult. The Bible says, “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated” (James 3:17). But the voice of the enemy brings confusion, pressure, and fear.
The devil always rushes people. He says, “Do it now, or you will miss it. Sign it today. Marry quickly. Do not tell anybody.” Beloved, any voice that rushes you and tells you to hide it from godly counsel should be treated with suspicion.
“He that believeth shall not make haste” (Isaiah 28:16). “He that hasteth with his feet sinneth” (Proverbs 19:2). God is not in a hurry to destroy you, so He will not push you into a decision without giving you time to confirm it.
The voice of the Holy Spirit convicts you to bring you back, but the voice of the devil condemns you to push you away. When the Holy Spirit shows you a wrong, He calls you to repent and come closer to God.
When the devil shows you a wrong, he tells you that you are finished and that God is tired of you. “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit” (Romans 8:1). Learn the difference.
And there is the voice of your own heart. Your flesh will always speak about what you want, what feels good, and what will make you look important. Your flesh will tell you what you want to hear.
That is why the Bible warns, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23). When your desire is very strong, be extra careful, because a strong desire can easily sound like the voice of God.
Look at King Ahab. He gathered four hundred prophets, and all of them told him what he wanted to hear: “Go up, for the Lord shall deliver it into the hand of the king.”
But Jehoshaphat was not satisfied, and he asked, “Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might enquire of him?” (1 Kings 22:7). There was one man, Micaiah, who told the truth, and Ahab hated him for it.
Ahab followed the voice of the majority, went to battle, and died. Beloved, the majority is not always the voice of God. Sometimes the true voice is the lonely voice.
Look at Balaam. God clearly told him, “Thou shalt not go with them” (Numbers 22:12). But when the king offered him more money and more honour, he went back to ask God again, as if God would change His mind.
Many people do the same today. God has already said no, but because their heart is set on that man, that woman, that contract, or that money, they keep praying and fasting until they convince themselves that God has said yes.
Balaam went on the journey, and an angel stood in the road with a drawn sword to stop him. It took a donkey to open his eyes. Do not let your desire make you deaf to what God has already said.
Look at Pilate. While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent a message to him saying, “Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him” (Matthew 27:19).
God sent a warning through a dream, through his own wife. But Pilate feared the crowd more than he feared the warning, and he delivered Jesus to be crucified.
Many people have received warnings through dreams, through their spouse, through their spirit, or through a man of God, but they ignored them because of pressure from people. Beloved, when God warns you, take it seriously.
Now look at those who waited on God and prospered. When Abraham’s servant went to find a wife for Isaac, he did not choose by beauty alone.
He prayed and asked God for a sign, and God led him straight to Rebekah. He said, “I being in the way, the LORD led me” (Genesis 24:27). When you put God first in the search, He will lead you to the right person and the right place.
Esther did not rush into the king’s presence. She called for three days of fasting before she acted (Esther 4:16), and God gave her favour that saved a whole nation.
Nehemiah stood before the king with a heavy heart, and before he opened his mouth, the Bible says, “So I prayed to the God of heaven” (Nehemiah 2:4).
Even in the middle of a conversation, he paused to consult God. That is the life of a man led by the Spirit. Before you speak, pray. Before you sign, pray. Before you agree, pray.
And what about the secret affair I spoke of? Look at Joseph. Potiphar’s wife pressed him day after day, and nobody was in the house. It looked like a secret that would never come out. But Joseph knew that God was watching, and he “left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out” (Genesis 39:12).
Beloved, when the Holy Spirit tells you to run, do not stay to negotiate. Some people lost their marriage, their ministry, their job, and their reputation because they stayed too long in a place God told them to flee.
So how do you become sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit? First, give Him time. You cannot hear God if you never sit still. Switch off your phone, open your Bible, and wait before Him.
Like Habakkuk, say, “I will stand upon my watch… and will watch to see what he will say unto me” (Habakkuk 2:1). Second, live a clean life, because sin makes the ears of the spirit heavy.
Third, fast from time to time, because fasting quiets the noise of the flesh. Fourth, write down what God shows you and test it with the Word. Fifth, seek counsel from mature, godly believers, but let the final witness come from the Holy Spirit in your own spirit.
And sixth, obey quickly in small things, because the one who obeys in small things will be trusted with greater instructions. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27).
And He also said, “And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers” (John 10:5). Beloved, as you walk with God, you will know His voice so well that the voice of the stranger will sound strange to you.
“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation” (Matthew 26:41). “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land” (Isaiah 1:19).
And above all, be careful of how many times you have disobeyed the voice of God. Every time you ignore Him, it becomes easier to ignore Him again. Today, return to the place of listening and obeying. Let the Holy Spirit lead you, and you will never walk alone. Remain blessed in Jesus’ name.
Let us pray. Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Forgive me for every time I ignored Your voice and followed my own desires or the voice of men. Open my spiritual ears to hear You clearly.
Give me the grace to recognise Your voice, the voice of the enemy, and the voice of my flesh. Deliver me from every false voice, every wrong counsel, and every trap disguised as a blessing. Give me the courage to obey You promptly, even when it is difficult.
Lead me in my marriage, my career, my business, my ministry, and every relationship. From today, I will not move until You lead me, and I will not stop until You tell me to stop. I am Your sheep, I hear Your voice, and I will follow You all the days of my life, in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
PERSONAL CHALLENGE
Set aside at least thirty minutes today, away from your phone and all distractions, to sit quietly before God with your Bible. Bring one pending decision before Him and ask for His direction. Write down whatever He impresses on your heart, test it against Scripture, and share it with a mature believer for confirmation before acting.
EVANGELISM CHALLENGE
Like Philip, ask the Holy Spirit today to lead you to one person who is ready to receive the gospel. Be sensitive throughout the day, and when He prompts you, go near and share Jesus with that person.
