BIBLICAL MEANING

Dreaming of a dead person talking to you can be a disturbing and confusing experience. Many people wake up wondering whether the dream was a message from the deceased, a warning, a spiritual attack, a memory, or simply a reflection of their sin.

From a biblical perspective, we should approach such dreams with discernment, prayer, and a firm reliance on God’s Word. The Bible teaches that God can speak through dreams, but it also warns believers against seeking communication with the dead or relying on familiar spirits.

Therefore, the focus should not be on the dead person but on understanding what the dream may symbolize and what lesson, warning, or encouragement God may want you to receive off the revelation. The meaning of the dream depends on who the deceased person was, what they said, how they appeared, the atmosphere of the dream, and the condition of your own spiritual life.

Dreams of dead people talking to you should not be interpreted carelessly. The conversation itself is often more important than the appearance of the dead person. In many cases, the dream is revealing that there is a spiritual communication taking place around your life.

Whenever there is communication with the dead, there is usually an exchange of information, glory, time, influence, instruction, or agreement going on in the background. This is why believers must be spiritually alert whenever they have such dreams.

There are times when a dead person speaking to you in a dream may serve as a warning sign that the spirit of death is attempting to gain access to a person’s life, family, health, marriage, ministry, or destiny.

The appearance of death does not always mean physical death is certain, but it may indicate that the enemy is introducing thoughts, fear, oppression, sickness, discouragement, or destructive influences.

The fact that the person is talking may symbolize an attempt to establish communication, influence, or acceptance with you. This is why many believers wake up from such dreams and immediately pray against every negative spiritual transaction with the dead.

The conversation aspect of the dream is very important. If you find yourself responding to the dead person, agreeing with them, accepting gifts from them, eating with them, following them, or receiving instructions from them, the dream may be warning you about spiritual compromises, wrong influences, or dangerous agreements.

Such dreams should lead you to prayer and fasting. Whether the attack is physical, financial, or spiritual, the believer must reject every agenda of darkness and reaffirm his covenant relationship with Jesus Christ.

At times, these dreams may reveal that a person is under the influence of fear. Fear often opens the door to torment, anxiety, depression, and instability. A dead person talking repeatedly in dreams may reflect an atmosphere of fear surrounding a person’s life.

God may be exposing this fear to you so that it can be confronted through faith, prayer, and confidence in His words. The enemy frequently uses the weapon of fear to weaken a believer before launching further attacks.

The dream may also indicate that somebody is receiving counsel. Every counsel has a source. The question is: who is advising you? What voice are you listening to? What influence is directing your decisions?

Sometimes God uses the symbolism of a deceased person to reveal that a person is being guided by outdated ideas, destructive habits, ungodly influences, or wrong advice. The dream is therefore calling the dreamer to examine the source of the counsel operating in his life.

There are many testimonies from people who dreamt of deceased relatives speaking with them shortly before hearing disturbing family news. Some later received reports of sickness, hospitalization, accidents, conflicts, or death within the family.

While such experiences should not create fear, they remind us of the importance of prayer. God often reveals things beforehand so that His people can intercede amd avert the danger quickly. A warning dream should push you to prayer rather than panic. The purpose of revelation is redemption.

At the same time, it would be wrong to conclude that every dream of a dead person talking to you is evil. Dreams must be judged carefully, biblically and prayerfully. There are situations where a deceased parent, grandparent, mentor, pastor, or loved one appears in a peaceful manner.

The dream atmosphere is calm. There is no fear, oppression, confusion, or darkness. The individual may simply remind the dreamer of valuable lessons, moral principles, faith, discipline, hard work, or godly character that they demonstrated while alive.

When the deceased person was someone who genuinely cared for you and had a positive influence upon your life, their appearance in a dream may sometimes represent memory, comfort, emotional healing, or lessons that remain relevant to your journey.

The dream may not be about the person at all, but about the values they represented when alive. God can use familiar memories to draw attention to truths that you have neglected. For example, a godly mother who constantly encouraged prayer in the family may appear in a dream during a period when your prayer life has become weak.

A father known for integrity may appear during a season when you are facing difficult decisions. In such cases, the dream may be reminding you of spiritual principles that once guided your life. The focus should not be on seeking communication with the dead but on understanding the lesson being highlighted.

Sometimes the conversation itself contains useful warnings. The dream may caution you against a dangerous relationship, a wrong business decision, carelessness, pride, or spiritual negligence. Such warnings should be weighed with the Scripture and confirmed through prayer. God can use symbols and familiar faces to communicate important truths to us. The message should always be tested by the Word of God.

The atmosphere of the dream is often one of the greatest keys to interpretation. If the dream leaves fear, heaviness, confusion, oppression, and anxiety, serious prayer is necessary. But if the dream leaves peace, conviction, wisdom, encouragement, and a stronger desire to seek God, the dream may be highlighting an important lesson rather than announcing danger.

Believers should never become obsessed with dreams involving the dead. That’s not the position of scripture. The Bible says, with long life will he satisfy you.  So the safest position is to bring every dream before God in prayer.

Reject every evil covenant, cancel every negative agreement, break every established satanic communication, and cover yourself with the blood of Jesus. At the same time, ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom to understand any genuine warning, lesson, or instruction contained in the dream.

Ultimately, the appearance of a dead person speaking in a dream should lead you closer to God, not deeper into fear. Whether the dream is exposing fear, warning against danger, revealing wrong counsel,  or reminding you of valuable lessons from the past, your protection remains in Christ.

Through prayer, discernment, obedience to God’s Word, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, every evil agenda against you can be cancelled and every genuine warning can become a source of divine preservation and victory.

The first thing to understand is that not every dream involving a dead person is evil. A person who recently lost a loved one may naturally dream about them because the mind is still processing the loss. The dream may not be spiritual warfare at all.

It may simply reflect affection, remembrance, and emotional attachment. God created human beings with emotions, memories, and relationships. Therefore, it is not unusual for a person who misses a deceased loved one to see them in a dream.

There are also situations where God allows the image of a deceased person to appear symbolically in a dream. The person may represent a lesson, a warning, a family issue, an inherited pattern, or a reminder of something important.

For example, if a deceased father appears speaking about responsibility, the dream may be drawing attention to leadership and responsibility in your own life. If a deceased mother appears speaking about prayer, the dream may remind you of spiritual values you learned from her. In such situations, the dream is not necessarily about the dead person themselves but about what they symbolize.

Another common interpretation is that the dream reveals unfinished emotional matters. Some people carry grief for many years after losing a loved one. Others carry guilt because they never reconciled with the deceased before their death. Some regret words they spoke, opportunities they missed, or relationships that ended badly.

These emotions often surface in dreams. The dead person may appear speaking words of comfort, correction, or reconciliation. Such dreams may reflect the need for emotional healing rather than spiritual danger. However, not every dream involving a dead person should be dismissed lightly.

There are dreams that serve as spiritual warnings. When the dead person appears repeatedly, gives strange instructions, demands unusual things, invites you to follow them, offers food, asks you to accompany them somewhere, or creates fear and oppression, such dreams require serious prayer and spiritual vigilance.

The Bible repeatedly warns believers against involvement with familiar spirits and deceptive spiritual influences. A dream that seeks to draw a believer away from God, create fear, confusion, bondage, or spiritual oppression should be rejected in prayer.

One of the most concerning dream scenarios is when a dead person asks the dreamer to follow them. Many believers regard this as a warning dream. Following a deceased person into a house, forest, river, vehicle, village, graveyard, or unknown destination may symbolize danger, spiritual attack, illness, discouragement, or attempts to draw a person into destructive situations.

Such dreams should never be ignored as a believer. Instead of becoming afraid, you should pray, seek God’s protection, and stand upon the promises of Scripture. Fear never solves spiritual problems; faith and prayer do.

Another variation occurs when the dead person gives instructions. Some dreamers are told to perform rituals, visit certain places, make sacrifices, or engage in activities that contradict biblical teaching. Such instructions should never be followed. God will never direct His children through messages that oppose His written Word.

Any dream instruction that promotes fear, superstition, occult involvement, revenge, hatred, or sinful behavior should be rejected immediately. The Word of God remains the final authority for every believer. There are also dreams where a dead relative appears happy and peaceful. They may smile, greet the dreamer, or simply talk normally.

Sometimes the dead person in the dream represents something in your own life that needs to die. The Bible frequently uses the language of death symbolically. Old habits must die. Sin must die. Pride must die. Fear must die. Unforgiveness must die. That relationship must die. That anger and wickedness must die.

Many people become frightened because they assume every death-related dream predicts physical death. This is not always true. Though some dream about death usually happen.  Joseph interpreted dreams involving cows and corn. Daniel interpreted dreams involving beasts and kingdoms.  Likewise, dreaming about a dead person talking does not automatically mean someone is going to die. The dream must be understood within its full context.

The believer’s confidence must always rest in Christ. Jesus is Lord over life and death. He defeated death through His resurrection and gives victory to all who trust Him. Therefore, no dream should produce greater fear than the power of God’s promises. Even when a dream contains a warning, God’s purpose is often about our protection rather than destruction. He reveals danger  to us so that His people can pray and overcome.

If you repeatedly dream of dead people talking to you, dedicate time to prayer. Ask God for understanding. Examine your emotional and spiritual condition. Forgive anyone you need to forgive. Release grief into God’s hands.

Reject fear quickly. Fill your mind with Scripture. Read Psalm 91, Psalm 27, Psalm 121, Isaiah 41:10, and Psalm 118:17 regularly. Worship God and declare His promises over your life. Remember that God has not given His children the spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind.

As you trust Him, He will reveal what you need to know, expose every deception, heal every wound, cancel every evil agenda, and guide you safely into His perfect will. The Lord who watches over His children neither slumbers nor sleeps, and He is able to preserve you from all evil and satisfy you with long life and His salvation.

Therefore, a deceased person speaking in a dream may symbolize God’s desire to close one chapter of one’s life and begin another. He may be calling you to repentance and mercy. In such cases, the dream is about asking God for peace and joy rather than physical death.

One dangerous aspect of such dreams occurs when the dead person attempts to establish some form of agreement. The deceased individual may offer food, gifts, clothing, money, documents, jewelry, or invitations. They may ask the dreamer to follow them somewhere, enter a vehicle, sign something, accompany them on a journey, or participate in an activity.

These dreams should never be ignored. Spiritually, they may represent attempts to establish negative covenants, agreements, limitations, or curse. The believer should reject every unauthorized exchange with the devil and pray against every satanic covenant seeking expression in their life through dreams.

A FAMILIAR SPIRIT

A familiar spirit is a demon that has attached itself to a family, a bloodline, or an individual over a long period of time. These spirits are familiar with your family because they have been studying your bloodline for generations. They know your grandmother’s mannerisms. They know your father’s voice.

They know how your late uncle used to laugh, how your deceased mother used to cook, how your dead spouse used to hold you. They have been observing your family for so long that they can impersonate any member of your bloodline with terrifying accuracy.

When a dead person appears in your dream and talks to you, in most cases it is not the actual person. It is a familiar spirit wearing the mask of your loved one. It looks like them. It sounds like them. It may even smell like them. But it is not them.

It is a demon with an agenda, and that agenda is never in your best interest no matter how loving, how comforting, or how helpful the conversation appears to be. The most common reason a dead person talks to you in the dream is to reinforce a generational covenant.

Every family has a spiritual history. Somewhere in the bloodline, covenants were made with idols, with water spirits, with ancestral shrines, with occult powers, with the kingdom of darkness. These covenants do not expire when the person who made them dies. They continue from generation to generation until someone with spiritual authority rises up and breaks them by the blood of Jesus.

The familiar spirits that enforce these covenants use the images and voices of dead relatives to maintain their grip on the living or family. When your dead grandmother appears in your dream and speaks to you, the familiar spirit wearing her face may be saying things that sound loving and harmless. She may say I am watching over you. She may say I want you to take care of the family.

She may say I left something for you. She may give you instructions about family property, family traditions, or family responsibilities. But behind every word is a spiritual transaction. By engaging in the conversation, by accepting her instructions, by emotionally connecting with her presence, you are unknowingly renewing the covenant that she or her generation made with the kingdom of darkness.

This is why some believers break free from generational patterns through prayer and fasting, only to find themselves back in the same cycle months later. They broke the covenant with their prayers, but then a dead relative appeared in their dream and re-established it through conversation. The familiar spirit used the emotional connection to the dead relative as a backdoor to undo the deliverance that had been achieved.

This is strategic and deliberate attempt of the enemy. The enemy knows that you will resist a demon that appears as a demon. But you will not resist a demon that appears as your beloved mother, father or your cherished grandfather. Your emotions will override your discernment, and the covenant will be renewed before you realize what happened.

When a dead person talks to you in the dream, they are often asserting authority over your life on behalf of the ancestral realm. In many bloodlines, the dead are believed to have authority over the living in the family. The ancestors are seen as guardians, guides, and governors of the family. This belief system whether your family practised it consciously or not creates a spiritual framework that allows ancestral spirits to exercise control over every living member of the family.

When a dead person speaks to you in the dream with authority, giving you commands, issuing warnings, demanding obedience, telling you what to do or what not to do, they are functioning as an ancestral governor. They are asserting that they have authority over your life and that you are subject to their governance.

This is a direct contradiction to the word of God, which says that Jesus Christ is the head of all principality and power. No dead relative has authority over your life. No ancestral spirit has governance over your destiny. You have been bought with the blood of Jesus and transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God’s dear Son. The dead have no jurisdiction over you.

But if you accept their authority in the dream, if you listen obediently, if you nod in agreement, if you follow their instructions, you are spiritually submitting to ancestral governance and rejecting the lordship of Jesus Christ over that area of your life. This is why some believers can never seem to break through in certain areas. They have given their spiritual consent through dream encounters to ancestral spirits who now govern those areas on behalf of the kingdom of darkness.

If a dead person talks to you in the dream and during the conversation gives you something, food, money, clothing, jewellery, keys, documents, or any object, this is an extremely dangerous dream. As I have taught in previous teachings on dream food, receiving anything from the dead in a dream establishes a covenant between you and the realm of the dead. The item they give you is not a gift. It is a contract. It is a spiritual document that binds you to the ancestral altar and gives the familiar spirits legal authority to operate in your life.

Food from the dead brings spiritual contamination like sickness, death, demotion, failure, heaviness, prayerlessness, and spiritual dryness. Money from the dead brings financial bewitchment, the money you earn in the physical will never be enough, it will always slip through your fingers, and poverty will follow you no matter how hard you work.

Clothing from the dead brings identity theft, you will begin to take on the characteristics, the failures, and the limitations of the dead person whose clothes you wore. Jewellery from the dead creates soul ties with the ancestral realm. Keys from the dead represent access, the ancestors are giving themselves access to every door in your life, including doors that God has opened for you.

If a dead person talked to you and gave you anything in the dream, you must reject and renounce that gift immediately upon waking. Do not wait. Do not analyse. Do not wonder if it might have been a positive dream. Anything received from the dead in a dream must be returned to sender by the fire of the Holy Ghost.

Open your mouth and say I reject everything that was given to me in the dream by the dead. I return it to sender by fire. I break every covenant that was established through that gift. I refuse every tie to the ancestral realm. The blood of Jesus is my only covenant and Jesus Christ is my only Lord.

If a dead relative appears in your dream and warns you about your travel like saying this to you, please do not travel tomorrow. You will go and never come alive. The warning seems genuinely concerned. And because the message comes from someone you loved and trusted in life, your instinct is to take it seriously and act on it.

But here is the trap. The moment you begin acting on the instructions of a dead person in your dream, you have made that dead person or more accurately, the familiar spirit impersonating them, your guide. You have replaced the Holy Spirit with a familiar spirit. You have turned to the dead for direction instead of turning to the living God.

And once this pattern is established, the familiar spirit will continue to appear in your dreams with more instructions, more warnings, more guidance, gradually becoming the primary voice that directs your life. You will begin to believe in the revelation.

Isaiah 8:19 addresses this directly. It says when they shall say unto you seek unto them that have familiar spirits and unto wizards that peep and that mutter, should not a people seek unto their God? For the living to the dead? God is asking a powerful question.

Why would you seek guidance from the dead when you have access to the living God? Why would you listen to a familiar spirit when you have the Holy Spirit? Why would you take direction from the grave when you can take direction from the throne?

If a dead person warned you about something in the dream, do not act on the warning directly. Instead, take the matter to God in prayer. If there is genuine danger ahead, God will confirm it through His word, through the Holy Spirit, through a living prophet, or through His own voice in your spirit. He does not need to use the dead to warn you. He has more than enough resources in the realm of the living to protect you and guide you.

PRAYER

Say I refuse to die before my time. I refuse to follow the dead. I choose life and not death. The Lord is my shepherd and I shall not want. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me.

I cancel every appointment with death that was scheduled in the dream. I break every summons of the grave that was issued against my life. I shall live and not die and declare the works of the Lord in the land of the living.

MESSAGE

There are people who repeatedly dream of the same deceased relative every month or every year. Such dreams should not be ignored. Repetition often suggests that there is a message, a pattern, or a spiritual matter requiring attention.

Sometimes the dream reveals generational problems operating in a family line. The deceased person becomes a symbol of inherited struggles, repeated failures, delayed marriages, chronic sicknesses, poverty patterns, or family battles that seem to move from one generation to another. God may be exposing these issues so they can be addressed through prayer and faith.

In some situations, a dead person may appear in a dream to reveal that the dreamer is living too much in the past. There are people whose future is being hindered because they are constantly looking backward.

The dream may be God’s way of saying, “You cannot move into your future while remaining emotionally trapped in yesterday.” The conversation with the dead person symbolizes an unhealthy attachment to something that God wants you to release.

Another important truth is that dreams of dead people talking to you can sometimes reveal that a spiritual battle is taking place around your destiny. Throughout life, there are battles over purpose, inheritance, progress, marriage, ministry, health, and opportunities.

When a deceased person suddenly appears and begins speaking, especially when you were not thinking about them before sleeping, it may indicate that the spirit realm is drawing attention to an issue requiring prayer. God may be exposing an attack before it becomes visible physically. This is one reason believers should never joke with recurring bad dreams.

The words spoken in the dream deserve careful attention. Some dead people in dreams speak words of discouragement such as, “Nothing will work for you,” “Your efforts are useless,” “Come and join us,” or “Your time is over.” These types of statements should be rejected immediately.

The enemy often uses negative words to plant fear, doubt, and hopelessness into a person’s mind. The purpose is to weaken faith and create agreement with defeat. Every word that contradicts God’s promises must be cancelled through prayer and replaced with declarations from Scripture.

A dead father talking to you may symbolize authority, responsibility, family leadership, provision, or direction. A dead mother talking to you may symbolize nurture, care, protection, family unity, or spiritual values. The dream may not necessarily be about the parent personally but about the qualities and responsibilities they represented. God may be using familiar imagery to communicate a lesson about your present life.

Some believers report dreaming of deceased pastors, mentors, teachers, or spiritual leaders. In such situations, the dream may highlight spiritual lessons learned under that person’s influence. Their appearance may remind you of prayer, holiness, evangelism, faithfulness, humility, or commitment to God’s work

It is also important to remember that the devil often attacks through suggestion before attacking through circumstances. A negative dream may be designed to introduce fear, anxiety, hopelessness, discouragement, or unbelief. Once a person accepts those suggestions, problem begins in their life.

There are also dreams where the dead person appears unusually friendly. They smile, converse naturally, and behave as if nothing is wrong. This can sometimes make the dream more deceptive because the dreamer lowers their spiritual guard.

Please not every pleasant dream carries a positive meaning. This is why discernment is necessary here. The appearance of kindness alone does not determine the source of a dream is good. The dream should always be evaluated according to its spiritual effect. Does it draw you closer to God or away from Him? Does it strengthen your faith or create confusion? Does it encourage righteousness or spiritual compromise?

In some cases, a deceased person may begin discussing family matters. They may talk about land, inheritance, property, money, family disputes, or family secrets. Such dreams may reveal unresolved family issues that continue to affect relationships among the people in the family.

God may be exposing hidden conflicts, bitterness, greed, or division that require prayer and wisdom. Sometimes the dream simply reflects tensions already present within the family. At other times, it serves as a warning to prevent future disputes.

There are people who notice that whenever they dream of a dead relative talking to them, certain negative events soon follow. It may be confusion in the family, conflict in marriage, financial loss, disappointment, strange sickness, or emotional distress.

While this does not mean every such dream predicts trouble, it does show why spiritual discernment is important. The dream may function as an early warning system, revealing that the enemy is attempting to attack. When such warnings are ignored, people often miss the opportunity to pray against the attack before it manifests.

The location of the conversation is also important. If the deceased person is talking to you inside your childhood home, the dream may relate to family foundations, family history, or issues originating from your upbringing. If the conversation takes place in a village, it may symbolize ancestral influences, family traditions, or long-standing family battles.

If it occurs in a hospital, the dream may point toward healing, restoration, weakness, or concern about one’s health. If it happens in a church, the message may relate to your spiritual life, relationship with God, or ministry assignment.

Many believers testify that after dreaming of a deceased person speaking to them, they suddenly remembered something they had neglected for years. Some remembered a promise they had abandoned. Others remembered an instruction they failed to obey. Some remembered family responsibilities they had ignored. In such cases, God may be using the dream as a tool of remembrance. Throughout Scripture, God frequently reminded His people of forgotten covenants, neglected duties, and important spiritual truths.

If you recently lost someone and you dream of them talking to you, and the conversation is mundane and ordinary, they are talking about everyday things, they are doing things they used to do in life, they are simply present in the dream the way they were present in your daily life, this is likely your mind processing the grief. It does not require spiritual warfare. It requires moving on from the past events.

Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. God is near to you in your grief. He is not distant or indifferent. He sees your tears. He hears your cries. He knows the emptiness that the loss has created in your life. And He is working to heal you, even through the process of dreaming.

However, you must be vigilant even in grief because the enemy loves to exploit seasons of vulnerability. He knows that when you are grieving, your defences are down. He knows that you long for one more conversation, one more moment, one more word from the person you lost.

And he will use that longing to introduce familiar spirits into your dream life, disguised as the comforting presence of your loved one. What begins as natural grief processing can gradually transition into familiar spirit encounters if you are not discerning and vigilant enough.

For example, if your late father was known for his extraordinary generosity and he appears in your dream speaking about provision and abundance, God may be saying that the spirit of generosity that marked your father’s life is now being activated in your generation through you.

If a deceased pastor who was known for healing miracles appears in your dream speaking about the sick being healed, God may be indicating that a healing anointing is being released upon your life and ministry.

It is important to understand that God desires His children to live under the guidance of the Holy Spirit rather than under the control of dreams. Dreams are valuable, but they must never replace Scripture, prayer, wisdom, and discernment. Many believers become unnecessarily frightened by dreams involving dead people. Fear is exactly what the enemy desires. Instead of fear, the proper response is prayer, faith, discernment, and trust in God’s protection.

Jesus Christ has complete authority over life, death, the grave, principalities, and powers. The believer does not need to fear any dreams of darkness. Through the blood of Jesus Christ, every power of darkness is defeated. Through His resurrection, every believer possesses authority over the works of the enemy.

Commit the dream to God. Reject every evil covenant. Renounce every satanic communication. Break every agreement with darkness. Cover yourself and your family with the blood of Jesus Christ. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any genuine warning, lesson, or instruction hidden within the dream.

If there is a danger ahead, ask God to prevent it. If there is a lesson to learn, ask Him for understanding. If there is an attack to resist, ask Him for victory. The believer’s greatest protection is a strong relationship with God. A person who regularly prays, studies Scripture, worships, and obeys God’s Word develops never go down.

Instruction

If you frequently dream of dead people talking to you, calling your name, inviting you somewhere, giving you strange instructions, offering you food, or creating fear and confusion in your spirit, do not ignore such dreams. Take them as a call to prayer and spiritual vigilance.

Embark on a 7-day fasting and prayer programme from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. During this period, ask God to reveal the true source and meaning of the dream. Pray for divine protection, spiritual discernment, deliverance from every covenant with darkness, and victory over every spirit of fear and death.

Throughout the seven days, read Psalm 91, Psalm 27, Psalm 121, Isaiah 41:10, Psalm 118:17, and 2 Timothy 1:7 daily. Meditate on these scriptures and declare God’s promises over your life every morning and evening.

Before going to bed each night, spend time worshipping God and praying for at least 15–30 minutes. Cover yourself, your family, your room, and your environment with the blood of Jesus Christ. Ask the Holy Spirit to sanctify your dream life and prevent every satanic intrusion while you sleep.
