EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: June 15, 2026 – When God Calls You to Pray at Night
There are times when God calls a person to pray at night because something important is about to happen. There are times when God calls a person at night to minister to His spirit. A believer may not understand why there is suddenly a burden to pray at night, but later discovers that God was preparing him for a breakthrough, a challenge, a new assignment, or an unexpected opportunity.
Prayer is the key to reaching God. Sometimes God wakes a believer at night because He wants to prevent something from happening. He wants you to be aware of something at that moment. He wants the devil to find you praying at that particular time. Prayer is one of God’s instruments of preservation. In the Bible, God warned His children before danger appears.
He warned Joseph concerning the safety of the child Jesus in Bethlehem. He warned the kings through dreams. He warned prophets through visions. When God calls someone to pray at night, it may be because He is providing spiritual covering over the situations that are not yet visible to the person in the physical realm. God is calling you to pray at night because He wants you to see the source of your battle.
God is sending you urgency to pray at night because someone is trying to cast spells at you. It may be because the enemy is trying to attack your destiny or carryout their evil manipulations against you or your loved ones. Praying at night is give you a big edge over your enemies. It’s to make you prepare for the battles ahead. God will not ask you to pray at night when there is no purpose.
Another important truth is that night prayer helps believers maintain spiritual alertness. The enemy often attacks people who have become careless, prayerless, and spiritually asleep. This is why Jesus told His disciples, “Watch and pray.” Watching means to be alert. It is to be spiritually conscious and connected to God. A praying believer is often more sensitive to spiritual dangers and more prepared to overcome them.
The Bible records that Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises to God at midnight while they were in prison. As they prayed and praised God, God answered them. Sometimes your midnight prayer is not only about protection; it is also about your deliverance, or the breakthrough of someone. It might be that God has programmed that night for your restoration or victory over the enemy.
The night is also a time when God tests our hunger for Him. It is a time when God wants to fill us with the Holy Spirit. You don’t pray anytime its convenient, you pray when God says its time. Believers who leaves the comfort of their sleep to spend time with God in prayer is making a statement that God’s presence is more valuable than temporary comfort.
Prayer is not powerful when it is not backup by God. But when God is asking you to pray at a particular period of time, it is because God is ready to listen to your petition and answer you. The enemy understands the value of prayer especially the one that is directed by God. When God calls you to pray at night, just know that He’s about to answer your prayer.
Sometimes when God wants a person to pray at night, trust me, unusual tiredness will appear. The person will experience some distractions. At other times, the person may finds it hard to sleep. When some people fails to pray, they may even feel the urge to postpone the prayer until when they are fully ready. Unfortunately, this means they have given the enemy the right to finish their assignment in their life.
This is why believers must learn to respond quickly when they sense the Holy Spirit is calling them to pray. Delayed obedience can sometimes lead to missed opportunities. God also uses the night to give direction concerning decisions. Many believers have received clarity about their relationships, ministry, business, family matters, and future plans after spending time in prayer during the night.
When the mind becomes quiet and the heart is focused on God, the wisdom of God will flow more freely. The steps to take will be revealed to you. The problems that seemed confusing during the day may become clearer after the time spent in God’s presence at night. But this does not mean God doesn’t answer prayer during the day. He answers.
But what we are saying is that when He calls you to pray at night, you should not ignore the instruction. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t just like praying before sleeping. They don’t even care if the Holy Spirit is asking them to do so or someone else. They just want to sleep and wake up early morning to rush for their work.
If you don’t take your prayer life seriously, the devil will help you damage it. It’s better to pray for 2 minutes at night than not praying at all. By doing that, you have obeyed the divine prompting. One thing we must also learn from Scripture is that God often prepares people before major important events occur in their life. Before Peter was sent to the house of Cornelius, God prepared him through spiritual encounters.
Before major breakthroughs occurred in the lives of servants of God, there’s always a season of prayer and waiting upon God. The prayer came before the manifestation. Sometimes God calls you to pray at night because He want to train your spirit. He may want you to pray at night for 7 days, 21 days. 30 days, 70 days, or 100 days.
The power isn’t in the prayer but the power in the instruction. Every prayer we pray has their own season of manifestation. Your own season might just be one night. If we take certain prayer at 8:00 am when the Holy Spirit asks you to take it by 12 pm, that prayer taken by 8:00 am may not receive that answers. The same method applies in the night too.
You see that a lot of us are complaining that God is not answering our prayers, the siple truth is that, God answers prayers. We must know when He wants us to execute the prayer. You may not understand why God wants you to rise up at night to pray, but later you will discover that those midnight prayers or night prayers were actually laying a solid foundation for your future victories.
Sometimes, you may not understand why God wants you to pray at night for just 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours etc. Later on, you will also discover that He’s building your prayer life. There are also times when God places someone on your heart during the night. It’s a must that you need to pray for the person.
Failure to do so might hinder your own breakthrough. Perhaps you don’t know the specific person He wants you to pray for, but all of a sudden, the spirit of God will reveal the person to pray for. The person could be your friend, a family member, a church member, or even someone you have not spoken to in years. It is risky to dimiss that divine direction.
It is risky to pretend that you never receive that kind of call to pray for someone at night. You may never know what battle they are facing at that very moment. Praying for them can make the Holy Spirit to help you too. The night season is also a time when God deals with issues that we often ignore during the day. You may be facing troubles during the day and God will tell you that the issue will only be solved at night during your prayers.
God may decide to bring up the wisdom you forget to use during the day to our night prayer. He may decide to remind us of our mistakes committed in the day and pray over it during the night. He may also decide to show you the revelation that escaped us during the day. So if you can catch up those messages, then you are blessed.
Another reason God may call you to pray at night is because He wants to release something to you. It could be spiritual strength, ideas, wisdom or something else. He may want to show you the place you need to go in the day. He want you to pray so that He can show you what someone is hiding from you. When God knows that you are losing spiritual strength, He may want to boost it by pointing you to a verse of the Bible.
A person who regularly responds when God calls will begin to recognize His leading more clearly in other areas of his life. In this case, decisions become easier because the relationship with God becomes stronger. There are moments in a believer’s life when God places a burden upon his heart to pray during the night. Sometimes you may wake up suddenly without any obvious reason.
At other times, sleep may leave your eyes completely, and despite your efforts, you find yourself awake. Many people become frustrated during such moments, not realizing that God may be calling them into a season of prayer, intercession, or spiritual fellowship. Please note that night prayer is not merely about fighting battles but also about intimacy with God.
Throughout the Scriptures, we see men and women who encountered God during quiet moments when others were deeply asleep. The night hours provide an atmosphere of praying, free from any forms of distractions, making it easier to hear God’s voice clearly. When God calls you to pray at night, it is a privilege and not a disturbance.
Many believers sees night praying as a form of disturbance, but they fail to realize that heaven may be inviting them into serious prayer. God does not wake His children without a purpose. If He places a burden in your spirit to pray at night, it’s better to respond to the urgency in the spirit. When God wants to bless a man, He directs him on what to do.
Many people pray for blessings, breakthroughs, and divine opportunities, but when God begins to lead them into the process that will produce those blessings in their life, they simply ignore His instructions. Sometimes the answer to your prayer is hidden behind an act of obedience. That midnight hour prompting you to pray may be connected to something you know nothing about yet.
You may not know if God has assigned angels concerning your situation at that particular hour. You may not know whether heaven is waiting for your prayer at that time. You may not know whether God wants to reveal a secret to you, avert a danger, release a breakthrough, or position you for a new season. What appears to be an ordinary urge to pray may actually be a divine invitation to participate in what God is doing on your behalf.
The truth is that most valuable things in life require sacrifice. Nothing good comes easy. If night prayer were not important, the Holy Spirit would not keep prompting believers toward it. God does not waste His children’s time. When He awakens a person with a burden to pray at night, there is usually a reason behind it. Sometimes the reason is for protection. Sometimes it is to pray for your family.
Sometimes it could be to pray for your friends. Sometimes it could be to pray for your nation. Sometimes it could be to pray for those who are passing through tough challenges. When God calls you to pray at night, it is for your good. If you don’t pick interest in prayer, you may lose all the benefits attached to it. The Bible tells us that Jesus often pray during the night.
Prayer gives us the power to make the right decision. Before our Lord Jesus chose His twelve disciples, He spent the entire night in prayer. If the Son of God saw the need for night prayer, then how much more we ignoring this important season? Sometimes God calls you to pray because a battle is taking place at the moment that you cannot yet see.
Sometimes He calls you because someone connected to you needs intercession. At other times, He simply want to give you some prayer points to take. Taking that prayer is very important at the night. Because if such prayer point is taken during the day, it may not receive that kind of huge breakthrough. When God calls you to pray at night, He may want you to start the prayer with worship, praise, thanksgiving, and or reading some prayers from the Scripture.
Many believers want divine direction, healing and promotion but without paying the price to pray at night. But if you are willing to pray for your testimony, then God bring it to pass. Some of the most important decisions of your life should not be made without prayer especially praying at night. God may use those quiet night hours to guide you concerning your family, ministry, business, health, relationships, or future.
Another reason God may call you to pray at night is because He wants to deepen your relationship with Him. Every healthy relationship requires communication. Imagine a child who only speaks to his father when he needs money. Such a relationship would be shallow. Unfortunately, many believers only pray when they need a miracle. God desires more than that. He wants fellowship. He wants communion. He wants His children to enjoy His presence.
When you respond to God’s call at night, you are telling Him that His presence is more important or valueable to you than anything else. You are saying that hearing His voice alone matters more to you than a few extra hours of sleep. This kind of hunger attracts divine encounters and connections. The devil also understands the power of a praying believer. This is why one of his strategies is to make believers spiritually insensitive.
He wants them to ignore those divine promptings. He wants them to become too busy, too tired, or too distracted to pray. But every time you respond to God’s call, you frustrate the enemy’s agenda and strengthen your spiritual life. Many believers want the power of God, but they do not always understand the price of intimacy with God.
The people who carried unusual grace in the Bible were often people who spent unusual time with God. They were not necessarily more talented than others, but they cultivated a deeper relationship with Him. There are some things God cannot tell you in a crowded environment. There are some directions that will not come during the day.
There are some answers that will not be done during the day but at night prayer. There are some revelations that will come only when your heart is settled and quiet before Him at night. This is why the night can become a special time of fellowship with God. There are times when you wake up and suddenly feel the need to worship, to speak in tongues, to read your Bible. There may be no prayer request in your mind.
There may be no urgent need to pray against the enemy. If God wakes you tonight to pray, ask Him what prayer He wants you to pray or what He wants you to do at that time. Don’t just pray random prayer. It’s better to ask questions than to assume what the Holy Spirit is expected of you. A few minutes spent with God in the night can accomplish more than many hours of human effort during the day.
One single prayer point the Holy Spirit asks you to pray is more powerful that many prayer points. That kind of prayer works faster like magic. That’s one of the secret praying answer. The devil does not know what you to know the secret. Do you know the devil will also want you to pray prayer that is not targeted? You don’t need to pray along at night, but in everything, let your night prayer be given to you through His Words.
When God calls you to pray at night, He is not asking you to shout at the top of your voice to disturb the sleep of your other neighbours. He’s not asking you to use your prayers to torment innocent people in your neighbourhood. When you begin to take prayer points that are not assigned to you by God, the prayer invites more attacks than breakthrough.
The value of prayer is not gotten by the flesh but by the spirit. When God calls you to pray at night, do not see it as a punishment. See it as an opportunity to communicate with Him. The greatest blessing is not merely the answer to prayer; but the privilege of knowing the God who answers prayer. However, it is important to remember that night prayer should not become a religious burden.
God is not impressed by people who stay awake merely to prove a point to others that they are prayer warriors. God is looking at the heart, energy and your flexibility. You can’t bribe God with hypocritical prayer. When God wakes you up, it may not be possible the reason is because of an attack. Sometimes He just wants you to pray. He just want you to pray at that time to encourage Him to give you what you have been asking for.
Prayer still remains the key to open doors. Praying at night gives room for your testimony to manifest on time. One instruction from God can change your destiny. One revelation from God can save us from trouble. One encounter with God can transform our life forever. Therefore, when God calls you to pray at night, make sure you are available to do so.
God still speaks at night. He still warns at night. He still strengthens at night. He still answers prayers at night. The question is: when He calls, will you respond? The first act of blessing is obedience. Adam and Eve didn’t obey God, and they lost heavenly benefits provided for them. Make night prayer your daily habit. If you can’t pray, sing, worship God. Just make sure you do something before you sleep.
The God who calls you into His presence is not looking to take something from you; He is preparing to deposit something into your life. The God who asks you to pray at night is not hindering you but want to help you. May you never miss the voice of God. May you never sleep through your season of your divine visitation. And may every night of your fellowship with God produce lasting fruits in your life, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
