Topic: Avoid these Devil’s Traps
Opening Scriptures (KJV)
1 Peter 5:8–9
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” “Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.”
Ephesians 6:11
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
2 Corinthians 2:11
“Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.”
Memory Verse (KJV)
Proverbs 22:3
“A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.”
Praise and Worship
Praise God for His protection, mercy, and faithfulness. Worship Him because He is able to expose hidden dangers, give you wisdom to recognize temptation, and provide a way of escape. Ask the Holy Spirit to sharpen your spiritual discernment and keep your feet from every path that leads away from God’s will.
EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: August 9, 2026 – Avoid These Devil’s Trap
A trap is something deliberately positioned to capture its victim. The effectiveness of a trap is often found in the fact that it is hidden. If the victim clearly recognizes the trap on time, there is a greater chance of avoiding it.
The Bible tells us not to be ignorant of Satan’s devices. The word devices reminds us that the enemy operates through schemes and strategies. He tempted Eve by making disobedience appear desirable.
He attempted to tempt Jesus by presenting shortcuts. He entered Judas’s heart through an opportunity for betrayal. Satan’s methods may differ, but his intention remains to draw people away from obedience to God.
One of the devil’s most effective traps is getting you to act before you think and pray. Many regrets begin with statements such as, “I was angry,” “I was desperate,” “I didn’t think about it before I took the step,” or “I just followed my feelings.”
The enemy knows our weaknesses and often benefits more when our emotions become stronger than wisdom. At times, before you take any step, learn to pause and think deeply about your action. Many things could be speaking through your heart. ”Do it this way, don’t do this way, marry her, don’t marry her”.
If you are not divinely guided, the enemy may guide you into destruction. Many times, a few moments of prayer and reflection can prevent years of regret. Not every problem, mistake, or difficulty should automatically be attributed to the devil.
Sometimes people fall into trap because of poor choices, lack of wisdom, unhealthy habits, or circumstances beyond their control. However, Scripture clearly teaches us that there are enemies but we must always remain sober and vigilant.
One of the devil’s most dangerous traps is gradual compromise. He may not tempt a believer to abandon God completely in one day. Instead, he encourages small compromises: “Just do it once. Nobody will know about it. It is not that serious. Everybody is doing it. So you are not the first person and you will not be the last”.
These kinds of words have put a lot of people into bondage and problem they survive from till today. The enemy may also attack people through uncontrolled appetite. An appetite is not necessarily sinful, but when any desire begins controlling you, it can become destructive one day.
Food, entertainment, sex, addition, money, attention, relationships, pleasure, or recognition can become traps when they occupy the place that belongs to God. 1 Corinthians 6:12 teaches us an important principle: we should not allow ourselves to be brought under the power of anything. You should possess things; things should not possess you.
Another trap is offence. Someone hurts you, and instead of dealing with the matter according to God’s Word, bitterness begins to grow. You begin to hate that person. Sometimes, you wanted to take revenge by insulting him.
Before long, you cannot pray freely, or feel happy because your heart is filled with anger. It feels like someone is denying you of your happiness.
You begin avoiding the person, judging his motives, and replaying the offence repeatedly in your mind. The original offence was painful, but allowing bitterness to control your heart creates another problem or setting a trap for you.
There is also the trap of returning to what God has already helped you leave behind. When the Israelites faced hardship in the wilderness, they began to remember Egypt as though it had been a better place for them, forgetting the suffering and bondage they experienced there.
In the same way, difficult seasons can sometimes make a person look back and desire something God has already delivered them from. It could be a wrong relationship, a destructive habit, an unhealthy environment, a sinful lifestyle, or a situation that once kept you in bondage.
If God has helped you come out of something that was destroying your life or a person drawing you away from Him, do not return to it. Keep moving forward and trust God to lead you into something better.
Watch out for the trap of envy. Envy can make another person’s blessing feel like you are not doing well in life. Instead of thanking God for what He has done for you, you begin asking why someone else has more. You begin to allow another person’s lifestyle disturbing your life.
Eventually, comparison produces resentment. Envy is a trap that can deny you of praising and appreciate what God has done in your life. Learn to celebrate other people’s progress and success while remaining grateful for your own journey. Their season does not cancel yours.
Another trap is taking correction as an attack. When you refuse other people to correct you, you are already in a trap. When you feel too big for any person to give you a good counsel, because you always take correction as a personal attack, you are already in the trap of stagnation.
When nobody can advise you, pride may already be building a trap around you. You do not have to accept every criticism as correction, but you should be humble enough to examine it. Sometimes the uncomfortable truth is exactly what will protects your future.
Another trap of the enemy is to make you become disappointed or bitter toward God. This can happen when you have prayed repeatedly but nothing seems to change, or when you are going through a painful situation and God appears silent.
At such times, the enemy may try to make you believe that God has forgotten you, God does not care about you, or will not answer your prayers. There is nothing wrong with asking God questions when you are confused or hurting.
The danger is allowing your disappointment to make you stop praying, stop trusting God, or walk away from Him. When you do not understand what God is doing, remain close to Him. Take your pain, questions, and disappointments to God in prayer instead of allowing them to push you away from Him.
There is also the trap of wrong relationships. Not everyone who comes into your life should be given the power to influence your decisions, values, or direction. Some relationships will strengthen your faith, encourage your growth, and bring out the best in you, while others may gradually lead you into compromise, distraction, and wrong decisions.
This is why you must be careful about the people you allow close to you. Do not allow loneliness, desperation, financial benefits, attraction, or the desire to be accepted to push you into relationships that can negatively influence your life.
Pay attention to the character, values, and influence of the people around you. Ask God for wisdom and discernment to recognize relationships that are good for you and the courage to distance yourself from those that continually pull you away from what is right.
Another dangerous trap is haste. When a person becomes desperate for marriage, money, promotion, recognition, success, or breakthrough, there is a tendency to make decisions without proper prayer, wisdom, and careful consideration.
Desperation can make you accept what you would normally question before acting and overlook warning signs you would normally notice. This is why you should never allow impatience to push you into making important decisions too quickly.
Don’t make decision when you are happy because you may later see it as regret. Before making major decisions, pray, seek wisdom from others, examine the situation carefully, and allow God to direct your steps.
Another dangerous trap of the enemy is distraction. Sometimes the enemy does not need to make you commit an obvious sin; he only needs to keep you distracted from what God has called you to do. Distractions can consume your time, weaken your focus, and gradually take your attention away from your purpose.
Nehemiah understood this when Sanballat and Geshem repeatedly tried to draw him away from rebuilding the wall. He refused to abandon his assignment simply because they demanded his attention.
In the same way, you must learn that not every argument requires your involvement, not every controversy deserves your attention, not every invitation must be accepted, and not every conflict deserves your response. Protect your time, energy, and focus. When distractions come to pull you away from what God has placed before you, remember the words of Nehemiah: “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down” (Nehemiah 6:3).
Learn to recognize the difference between conviction and condemnation. When you do something wrong, the Holy Spirit may convict you by making you aware of your sin, and its consequences and leading you toward repentance and restoration. Conviction does not push you away from God; it draws you back to Him.
Condemnation, on the other hand, can leave you feeling that your failure has completely disqualified you and that there is no reason to keep trying. Do not allow your mistake or failure to become an excuse to remain in sin or give up on your walk with God.
When you fall, acknowledge what you have done, sincerely repent, ask God for forgiveness, learn from the experience, strengthen the areas where you are vulnerable, and continue following Christ. Failure should not become your permanent position. Get back on the right path and keep moving forward with God.
Beloved, you may not be able to prevent every temptation from coming your way, but you can decide how you respond to it. You may not control every thought that suddenly comes into your mind, but you can choose whether to entertain it or reject it.
You may not control everyone who comes into your life, but you can decide who is allowed to influence your decisions and direction. This is why you must guard your heart, watch your choices, and remain spiritually alert. You may not always control what comes before you, but by God’s grace, you can control what you allow to remain, grow, and influence your life.
Therefore, guard the gates of your life carefully. Guard what you allow your eyes to see and your ears to hear. Guard your heart, your relationships, your conversations, your private life, your time, and your integrity. What you continually allow into your life can eventually influence your thoughts, decisions, character, and spiritual direction.
Beloved, you cannot effectively avoid a trap you refuse to recognize. Prayer is important, but you must also remain watchful. Study the Word of God, listen to wise counsel, examine your motives, identify areas where you are repeatedly vulnerable, and establish healthy boundaries.
Pay attention to anything that consistently weakens your relationship with God, pressures you to compromise your convictions, disturbs your peace, or encourages you to disobey what you know is right. Do not continue giving such things unnecessary access to your life.
Ask God for discernment to recognise what is harmful, give you wisdom to make the right decisions, and strength to walk away when necessary.
The purpose of today’s message is not to make you suspicious of everyone you meet or afraid of every situation you encounter. Rather, it is to encourage you to become spiritually alert, discerning, and wise. A vigilant Christian does not live in constant fear of what the enemy may do; instead, he lives with confidence in God while remaining watchful.
Through the Word of God, prayer, wisdom, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, you can recognize temptation, identify unhealthy influences, resist the devil, avoid unnecessary problems, and make decisions that keep you on the right path. Stay prayerful, stay watchful, and continue trusting God to guide your steps.
Some traps are hidden inside shortcuts. They often appear to offer an easier, faster, or more convenient way to get what you want. At such moments, you may be tempted to justify a wrong decision by saying, “Everybody is doing it.” But the fact that something has become common or widely accepted does not automatically make it right.
As a believer, your standards should be rooted in God’s Word, not simply in what other people are doing. If the pursuit of success requires dishonesty, deception, or compromise, you need to reconsider the path you are taking.
If a relationship continually draws you away from Christ and weakens your convictions, you need to examine its influence carefully. If an opportunity requires you to sacrifice your integrity or disobey what you know is right, have the courage to walk away. It is better to wait for the right opportunity than to gain something quickly and later regret the price you paid for it.
One of the greatest protections against the traps of the enemy is understanding your own weaknesses. Temptation does not affect everyone in the same way. An area that is a serious struggle for one person may have little influence over another.
For some, the struggle may be anger; for others, it may be pride, greed, sexual temptation, jealousy, the desire for approval, careless speech, or impatience. This is why spiritual maturity requires honest self-examination.
You need to recognize the situations, emotions, environments, and influences that make you more vulnerable to wrong decisions.
Bring your weaknesses before God in prayer, strengthen yourself through His Word, seek wise counsel where necessary, and establish healthy boundaries that will help you avoid situations that repeatedly lead you into compromise.
The devil often uses bait to draw people toward a trap. Naturally, most people would avoid something if they could clearly see the danger from the beginning. This is why temptation often comes through something that appears attractive, beneficial, convenient, or difficult to resist.
Spiritually, the bait may come in the form of quick money, an attractive relationship, an opportunity for recognition, a desire to get revenge on someone who hurt you, or a shortcut to something you desperately want. The attraction may capture your attention while the possible consequences remain hidden.
This is why you should not judge every opportunity only by what it promises you today. Look beyond the immediate benefit and consider where that decision may eventually lead you.
Ask yourself: Will this draw me closer to God or gradually take me away from Him? Will I still be at peace with this decision tomorrow? Wisdom looks beyond the attraction of the moment and considers the consequences that may follow.
Consider Joseph in Potiphar’s house. When he was confronted with temptation, Joseph did not remain in the situation trying to prove how spiritually strong he was. He recognized the danger and fled immediately.
This teaches us that there are certain temptations you do not overcome by remaining close to them or trying to negotiate with them; sometimes, you overcome them by creating distance.
There are moments when the wisest and most spiritual decision is to remove yourself from an environment that continually exposes you to temptation. It may mean ending an inappropriate conversation, rejecting an invitation, limiting access, changing an unhealthy routine, or distancing yourself from an influence that repeatedly encourages you to compromise.
Do not deliberately remain in situations that continually weaken your convictions and then depend only on willpower to resist. Prayer is important, but wisdom also teaches us when to walk away.
Another dangerous trap is excessive confidence in yourself. First Corinthians 10:12 warns, “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” Never reach the point where you believe you are too spiritual, experienced, prayerful, disciplined, or anointed to make a serious mistake.
Spiritual maturity should make you more watchful, not careless. David was a man after God’s own heart, yet he still made serious mistakes when he failed to guard himself. Peter was confident that he would never deny Jesus, yet when pressure came, he did exactly what he believed he would never do.
Their experiences remind us that no believer should become careless simply because of past victories or spiritual experience. Humility recognizes the need for God’s grace, maintains healthy boundaries, and remains alert to temptation.
The moment you begin to think, “It can never happen to me,” may be the very moment you need to become more watchful. The enemy can also use discouragement as a trap. When prayers seem unanswered, expectations are delayed, or life becomes difficult, you may be tempted to conclude that God has forgotten you.
At such moments, guard your heart. Discouragement can make people abandon good decisions, withdraw from fellowship, stop praying, or return to habits God previously helped them overcome. Do not make permanent decisions because of temporary disappointment.
Be careful also with the trap of comparison. When you continually compare your life with other people’s achievements, possessions, marriages, ministries, careers, or opportunities, contentment begins to disappear. You may start pursuing things God never assigned to you simply because somebody else has them.
Comparison can push you outside God’s timing. Run your own race. Another person’s testimony should encourage you, not make you abandon your own journey. Flattery can also become a trap. Not everyone praising you is helping you. Some praise feeds pride rather than purpose.
When people constantly tell you what you want to hear, you may gradually become resistant to correction. Surround yourself with people who can celebrate you but also lovingly tell you the truth when you are wrong. A person who cannot receive correction becomes easier to deceive.
Another dangerous trap of the devil is making sin look normal because everybody around you is doing it. When wrong behaviour becomes common, people can gradually stop seeing it as dangerous. But popularity does not determine righteousness.
If the whole world chooses one direction and God’s Word points in another, the believer must have the courage to stand with God. Noah stood differently from his generation, Joseph refused compromise, and Daniel maintained his convictions in Babylon. Never allow the behaviour of the crowd to become your spiritual standard.
Beware also of the trap of revenge. When somebody hurts you deeply, the desire to make that person feel the same pain can become powerful. But revenge often creates another prison for the offended person. Romans 12:19 teaches believers to leave vengeance with God. You may need boundaries, accountability, or appropriate action when someone has wronged you, but do not allow hatred to take possession of your heart.
The devil may also attempt to use your greatest desire as bait. If you desperately want marriage, you may overlook serious warning signs in a relationship. If you desperately want money, you may ignore dishonesty in a business opportunity. If you desperately want recognition, you may compromise your values for visibility. If you desperately want promotion, you may begin pleasing people at the expense of pleasing God. Sometimes, our desire can become dangerous when it becomes stronger than obedience.
This is why you must be willing to tell God, “Lord, if this thing will destroy my relationship with You, I don’t want it.” That is a powerful level of surrender. Sometimes protection does not look like receiving what you prayed for; sometimes protection looks like God keeping you away from what would have harmed you.
Be careful with people who continually pressure you to violate your convictions. A healthy relationship should not require you to become dishonest, immoral, manipulative, or spiritually careless. Anyone who repeatedly pushes you toward what you know is wrong should not have unrestricted influence over your decisions. Love people, forgive people, pray for peoplebut exercise wisdom concerning access.
There is also what I call the trap of the wrong association. The people around you can either strengthen your relationship with God or gradually weaken it. Amnon had a friend called Jonadab, and the advice he received from that friendship contributed to a terrible decision.
Some people entered your life as friends, but if you are not careful, their influence can lead you into choices that brings regret. You cannot continually walk with people who celebrate what God condemns and expect their influence never to affect you.
There is also the trap of wrong counsel. Not everybody advising you understands God’s purpose for your life. Some advice sounds intelligent but can still lead you in the wrong direction. Rehoboam lost much of his kingdom because he rejected wise counsel and listened to advice that appealed to his pride.
Before accepting important advice, ask yourself: Is it consistent with Scripture? Is it wise? What are the likely consequences? Never hand the steering wheel of your destiny to people who will not share the consequences of your decisions.
Learn to ask questions before major decisions: Where will this lead me? What could this cost me? Will this strengthen or weaken my walk with God? Would I be comfortable bringing this decision before God in prayer? These simple questions can save you from many unnecessary battles.
Beloved, one of the greatest victories you can have is not escaping a trap after falling into it, but recognizing the trap before you enter it. Prevention is better than recovery. There are battles you do not need to fight if you listen when God warns you.
There are tears you do not need to shed if you pay attention to wisdom. There are relationships you will not need deliverance from if you seek God’s direction before entering them.
Another trap is the desire to prove yourself. You do not have to respond to every criticism. You do not have to fight everyone who misunderstands you. You do not have to answer every accusation immediately. Sometimes the enemy wants to distract you from your assignment by keeping you busy defending yourself.
Nehemiah understood this when his enemies repeatedly invited him to come down from rebuilding the wall. His response was simple: “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down.” Some battles are distractions. Stay on the wall.
Be careful also when you are angry. Anger can make an intelligent person behave foolishly. It can make you send the message you should never have sent, say the words you will later regret, or make a decision you would never make with a calm mind.
When you are extremely angry, give yourself time before making important decisions. Pray, calm down, and seek wisdom. Do not allow five minutes of anger to destroy something that took five years to build.
The enemy may also use curiosity as a trap. You do not need to see everything. You do not need to know everything. You do not need to participate in every conversation.
There are things that are easier to avoid before they enter your mind than to remove afterward. Guard what you watch, what you listen to, what you read, and the conversations you entertain. What repeatedly enters your mind will eventually influence your thinking.
Another trap is believing that because God forgave you previously, you can deliberately return to the same wrong behaviour. Grace is not permission to play with temptation. Grace teaches us to deny ungodliness and live soberly and righteously. When God delivers you from something, build boundaries that make it difficult to return there.
There is also the trap of neglecting your family while pursuing success. You can become so busy building your career, business, or ministry that the people closest to you receive the smallest portion of your attention. Success should not require the destruction of the relationships God has entrusted to you. Make time for your family. Listen to them. Be present. Do not win publicly while losing privately.
Never ignore repeated correction. When several trustworthy and mature people independently raise the same concern about your behaviour, attitude, decisions, or direction, do not immediately conclude that everyone is against you. Take time to pray about what they are saying and honestly examine yourself.
This does not mean that every criticism is correct, but repeated concerns from people who genuinely care about you should not be dismissed without consideration. Sometimes God uses wise counsel and correction to draw our attention to dangers, weaknesses, or mistakes that we may not recognize ourselves.
Pride quickly rejects correction, but wisdom listens, examines what has been said, keeps what is true, and makes the necessary changes.
Beloved, the devil does not need to destroy your entire life in one day. If he can gradually move you away from prayer, gradually weaken your convictions, gradually introduce compromise, and gradually separate you from godly accountability, he can accomplish much without you noticing. This is why you must pay attention to small changes in your spiritual life.
When prayer begins to feel unnecessary, check yourself. When Scripture no longer corrects you, check yourself. When you begin defending what you once knew was wrong, check yourself. When correction makes you angry instead of reflective, check yourself. When you constantly hide your actions, check yourself.
Do not wait until the trap closes before you cry for help. Return to the place of prayer. Return to God’s Word. Restore healthy boundaries. Seek wise counsel. Correct what needs to be corrected. Apologize where necessary. Walk away from whatever is pulling you toward destruction.
And remember this: the safest way to avoid the devil’s traps is to stay close to Jesus. The closer you walk with Christ, the more sensitive you become to what threatens your fellowship with Him. His Word gives light. His Spirit gives discernment. His grace gives strength. His wisdom shows you the way of escape.
You will not recognize every trap by intelligence alone. You need God. Therefore, pray before you decide. Think before you react. Investigate before you trust. Seek counsel before major commitments. Read God’s Word before accepting popular opinions. And when the Holy Spirit uses Scripture and wisdom to warn you, do not continue simply because your emotions want something.
Beloved, one of the most dangerous things about the devil’s trap is that it may not look like a trap at the beginning. If every trap looked dangerous, very few people would enter it. Sometimes what destroys a person enters their life looking like an answer to prayer. That is why you need discernment.
There are times when evidence appears convincing, yet you still need wisdom. Do not allow appearances alone to make major decisions for you. What does God’s Word say? What are the facts? What are trusted and mature people saying? Have you given yourself enough time to think? Do not be afraid to investigate something simply because it looks spiritual.
Another trap is emotional attachment. Once people become emotionally attached to something, they sometimes stop seeing warning signs. This is why you should never allow emotions alone to determine your direction. Emotions are real, but they are not always reliable guides. You can feel strongly about something and still be wrong.
You can be excited about someone and still need time to understand their character. You can feel afraid of something that is actually good for you. Let your feelings be submitted to Scripture, wisdom, prayer, and sound judgement.
There is also the trap of entitlement. Entitlement begins when a person starts believing that God, people, or life must reward them simply because of what they have done or how long they have waited. This attitude can lead to unhealthy comparison, disappointment, jealousy, and bitterness.
You may begin to ask, “After everything I have done for this person, why has He not answered me?” or “Why did that person receive a breakthrough before me?” Be careful when another person’s testimony begins to make you question God’s goodness toward you.
Your journey will not always look like someone else’s, and God’s timing may be different for each person. Do not allow what you are still waiting for to make you forget what God has already done.
Entitlement can gradually turn gratitude into resentment, but thankfulness keeps your heart focused on God’s goodness. Continue to pray and trust God for your desires, but remain grateful for His mercy, grace, and the blessings you already have.
Another dangerous trap is the fear of disappointing people. Some people know what is right, yet they find it difficult to say no because they are afraid of rejection, criticism, or losing people’s approval.
As a result, they may accept invitations they should decline, remain in unhealthy relationships, agree to things they are uncomfortable with, or participate in activities that go against their convictions simply because they do not want others to see them as difficult.
You cannot allow the desire to please people to become more important than doing what you know is right before God. There will be times when your decisions may disappoint someone, even when you have acted with wisdom and good intentions.
You do not have to become rude, harsh, or disrespectful in order to maintain your boundaries. Be respectful and loving, but also learn to say no when necessary. Not everyone will understand your decisions, and that is okay. Seek to please God, maintain your convictions, and do not sacrifice your peace or integrity simply to gain the approval of others.
There is also a trap in talking too much about your plans before they are properly developed. Not every idea, opportunity, vision, or next move needs to be announced immediately. Some things require maturity or time for prayer, preparation, planning, and careful consideration before they are shared with others.
Speaking too early can sometimes expose you to unnecessary opinions, pressure, discouragement, or distractions before you have gained enough clarity about what you want to do. This does not mean you should become secretive or suspicious of everyone.
There are times when you need to seek advice from mature and trustworthy people. The important thing is to learn discretion and know what to share, when to share it, and with whom to share it. Give your plans enough time to develop before making them public. Not everything God places in your heart needs an immediate announcement.
Another dangerous trap is allowing money to determine your values and decisions. Money is necessary and useful, but when the desire for money becomes stronger than your commitment to what is right, it can lead to greed, dishonesty, betrayal, and compromise.
Judas allowed money to influence his loyalty, while Gehazi pursued material gain in a way that eventually brought serious consequences upon him.
As a believer, never allow financial pressure or the promise of profit to make you sacrifice your integrity. There may be times when an opportunity looks financially attractive but requires you to compromise your values, deceive someone, or participate in something you know is wrong. Have the courage to walk away.
Even when you genuinely need money, not every offer should be accepted. Money can be recovered, but the consequences of damaged character, broken trust, and compromised integrity can last much longer.
Another trap can come through the wrong friendship or misplaced trust. Not everyone who comes close to you necessarily has good intentions. Scripture teaches believers to be wise and discerning about the company they keep. A person may appear friendly while carrying jealousy, resentment, dishonesty, manipulation, or another harmful motive.
This does not mean you should become suspicious of every friend or assume that someone intends to poison you without evidence. It means you should not ignore clear warning signs simply because the person is familiar to you.
Be careful about giving unrestricted access to your home, family, private affairs, finances, and personal information to people whose character you do not know well. Friendship should not cancel wisdom.
If someone repeatedly behaves dishonestly, violates boundaries, makes threats, tampers with your belongings, or gives you a genuine reason to fear for your safety, take the matter seriously.
Create appropriate distance, secure your environment, tell a trusted responsible person, and seek help from the proper authorities when there is credible evidence of danger.
The Bible says, “A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself” (Proverbs 22:3). You can love people without giving everybody unrestricted access to your life. You can forgive someone without restoring the same level of trust immediately. You can pray for people while maintaining healthy boundaries.
Beloved, choose your friends carefully. The wrong friendship can expose you to unnecessary trouble, while godly friendships can strengthen your faith, sharpen your character, and protect you from poor decisions.
Ask God for wisdom to know whom to welcome closely, whom to keep at a healthy distance, and when genuine evidence of danger requires practical action.
Learn also to recognize the trap of fighting people while losing sight of the real issue. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that our struggle is ultimately not against flesh and blood. Sometimes, when someone hurts, opposes, betrays, or mistreats you, it is easy to become so focused on the person that anger and bitterness begin to control your heart.
This does not mean you should ignore wrongdoing, tolerate abuse, or refuse to establish necessary boundaries. Wrong actions should be addressed with wisdom, and appropriate steps should be taken when necessary.
However, do not allow another person’s behaviour to turn you into a bitter, hateful, or revengeful person. Pray for wisdom, deal with the situation appropriately, protect yourself where necessary, and refuse to let hatred take root in your heart. You can confront wrong behaviour without allowing bitterness to control you.
Another dangerous trap is spiritual pride. Sometimes, after God has used a person greatly, that person begins to believe they can no longer fall. They stop listening to correction. They stop examining themselves. They begin to think every decision they make must automatically be God’s decision.
The Bible warns, “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12). The higher God takes you, the more you need humility, accountability, and dependence upon Him.
Do not allow your gift to make you careless about your character. You may be gifted and still need discipline. You may preach powerfully and still need accountability. You may pray for others and still need to guard your own heart. You may understand Scripture and still need to flee temptation.
Spiritual gifts are not substitutes for godly character. Sometimes the devil’s trap comes after a major victory. Elijah experienced a tremendous victory on Mount Carmel, yet shortly afterward he became deeply discouraged. Jesus Himself was tempted after a significant spiritual moment in the wilderness.
Therefore, after God gives you a breakthrough, do not become careless. After a successful programme, remain prayerful. After promotion, remain humble. After receiving money, remain disciplined. After your testimony, continue watching and praying.
The enemy may also use hurt and disappointment from people you respect as a trap. When someone you trusted, loved, or looked up to disappoints you, the pain can be difficult to handle. If you are not careful, that experience may affect your trust in others, your willingness to serve, your relationships, or even your walk with God.
Do not allow another person’s failure to become the reason you turn away from Christ. People can make mistakes, leaders can disappoint, friendships can change, and relationships can sometimes become painful, but Jesus remains faithful.
Deal with the hurt wisely, forgive where necessary, establish healthy boundaries when needed, and seek healing without allowing bitterness to control your heart. Your relationship with God should not be determined by the behaviour of another person.
Beloved, you do not have to get close to every trap before you recognize that it is dangerous. Sometimes wisdom simply tells you to stay away. You do not need to experience the consequences of a wrong decision before accepting that it can harm you.
There are places you should avoid, conversations you should not entertain, invitations you should decline, relationships you may need to distance yourself from, and opportunities you should have the courage to reject.
Do not deliberately expose yourself to situations that continually weaken your convictions simply because you believe you are strong enough to handle them.
Spiritual maturity is not about proving how close you can get to temptation without falling; it is knowing when to create distance. Remember, having the opportunity or freedom to do something does not always mean it is wise or beneficial for you to do it.
Beloved, avoiding the devil’s traps requires more than shouting powerful prayers. You need wisdom. You need discernment. You need self-control. You need knowledge of God’s Word. You must pay attention when the Holy Spirit warns you. Sometimes God will disturb your peace concerning a decision.
Sometimes He will use Scripture, wise counsel, or circumstances to make you reconsider your direction. Do not ignore genuine warning signs simply because you desperately want something.
Stay prayerful, but also stay watchful. Jesus told His disciples, “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation” (Matthew 26:41). Notice that He did not say only “pray.” He said watch and pray. Prayer without watchfulness can leave you repeatedly walking into situations you should have avoided.
Learn from your previous mistakes. If a particular environment repeatedly leads you into temptation, create distance immediately. If certain conversations continually pollute your mind, stop entertaining them.
If particular relationships continually drawing your faith away from Christ, establish healthy boundaries quickly. If something repeatedly provokes you into behaviour you later regret, identify the pattern and deal with it.
And whenever you discover that you have fallen into a trap, do not remain there. Run back to God. Repent sincerely, receive His forgiveness, learn from what happened, and allow Him to restore you.
The enemy wants failure to become your permanent identity, but the grace of God calls you back to repentance and transformation.
The trap may be hidden, but God can expose it. The temptation may be strong, but God’s grace is stronger than it. The enemy may be crafty, but the wisdom of God is greater. Stay close to Jesus, remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit, and refuse to give the enemy an advantage over your life.
Beloved, ask God not only for the power to escape traps but also for the discernment to recognize them early. Prevention is often better than recovery. It is better to refuse the wrong relationship than to spend years recovering from it.
It is better to reject dishonest money than to lose your peace and integrity. It is better to control one angry response than to spend months repairing the damage caused by careless words.
Stay prayerful, but also stay watchful. Stay loving, but remain discerning. Stay confident in God, but remain humble. Forgive people, but learn from experience. Trust God, but do not ignore wisdom.
The enemy may prepare the trap, but you do not have to enter it. When God’s Word becomes your standard, the Holy Spirit your Guide, and wisdom your companion, you can recognize danger early and choose the path that leads to life, peace, and God’s purpose.
Do not wait until you are inside the trap before you start praying for escape. Ask God for the wisdom to recognize it and the courage to walk away. The devil’s trap may contain attractive bait, but God’s wisdom reveals the hook behind it.
May God open your eyes to every trap disguised as an opportunity, expose every deception hidden behind attractive appearances, give you courage to walk away from temptation, and lead you safely in the path of righteousness.
You shall not exchange your destiny for temporary pleasure. You shall not destroy tomorrow because of today’s emotions. You shall not lose years of labour because of one careless decision. Watch and pray. Stay humble. Stay disciplined. Stay close to God.

Daily Reflection
(Ask Yourself)
- Am I spiritually alert enough to recognize the traps the enemy may place before me?
- Is there any temptation I keep entertaining instead of completely walking away from it?
- Have I mistaken an attractive opportunity for God’s will without first seeking His direction?
- Are there warning signs in a relationship, friendship, business, or decision that I have been ignoring?
- What area of weakness in my life requires stronger boundaries and greater self-control?
- Am I allowing anger, loneliness, desperation, greed, pride, or offence to influence my decisions?
- Is there anyone in my life who can honestly correct me when I am going in the wrong direction?
