Don’t Go There – EJOM DAILY DEVOTIONAL: October 7, 2026

Beloved, have you ever heard the words, “Don’t go there”? Maybe your spirit has been telling you, or someone has been saying it to you again and again: “Don’t go there.” Those three words can mean many things.

Sometimes they come as a warning. They may mean, “Don’t embark on that journey.” “Don’t execute that plan.” “Don’t get involved in that relationship.” “Don’t visit that person.” “Don’t marry him.” “Don’t sign that agreement.” “Don’t enter that business.”

But you must understand something very important. The voice that says “Don’t go there” can come from three different sources. It can come from God, it can come from the devil, and it can come from your own inner man, your fears, emotions, and desires.

The same words can carry very different spirits behind them. That is why you need discernment. When God says, “Don’t go there,” He is saying it to save you from a danger you cannot see. He is trying to awaken your spirit to something that wants to consume you.

God sees the end from the beginning. He sees the trap hidden under the carpet, the knife hidden behind the smile, and the accident waiting on the road. “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it” (Isaiah 30:21).

The same God who shows you the way will also show you where not to go. But Satan can also use the same words against the plans of God for your life.

When you are about to meet the person who has been waiting to help you, accommodate you, or promote you, the devil may make the words “Don’t go there” louder in your mind.

When you are about to go to a prayer meeting, a crusade, or a deliverance service, a voice says, “Don’t go there, you don’t need it.” When you are about to pray against the evil plans of the enemy, a voice says, “Don’t pray against evil, leave it alone.” That is not God.

That is the enemy trying to keep you away from your help. Look at what happened when Jesus told His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem to suffer and die. Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him: “Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.” In other words, “Don’t go there.”

But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men” (Matthew 16:22–23).

Peter loved Jesus, and his words sounded caring, but the spirit behind them was fighting the plan of God in his life. Not every “don’t go” from a loving person is the voice of God.

Look at Nehemiah. His enemies sent to him four times saying, “Come, let us meet together in the plain of Ono.” But they meant to do him harm. Nehemiah answered, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down” (Nehemiah 6:2–3). Here, his spirit told him, “Don’t go there,” and he obeyed.

But then a man named Shemaiah, pretending to be a prophet, told him, “Let us hide in the temple, for they will come to slay you tonight.” That sounded like a warning from God.

But Nehemiah discerned it and said, “Should such a man as I flee?” And he perceived that “God had not sent him” (Nehemiah 6:10–12). The enemy had hired him to make Nehemiah afraid and sin.

Beloved, the enemy can send fear dressed as a warning. Nehemiah knew when to say “I will not go” and when to say “I will not hide.” Look at Elisha. Three times Elijah told him, “Tarry here, I pray thee.”

Three times Elisha refused and said, “As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee” (2 Kings 2:2, 4, 6). If Elisha had obeyed that “don’t come” from his master, he would have missed his double portion.

Sometimes God allows a “don’t go there” to test how badly you want what He has prepared for you. And look at Paul.

As he journeyed to Jerusalem, disciples in different cities warned him, and the prophet Agabus took Paul’s girdle, bound his own hands and feet, and said this is how the owner of this girdle will be bound.

Everyone wept and begged Paul not to go. But Paul said, “I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 21:13).

Paul already knew from the Holy Spirit that bonds awaited him, but he also knew he was “bound in the spirit” to go (Acts 20:22–23).

The people were not wicked; they loved him. But Paul had heard from God himself. Beloved, people may love you and still advise you wrongly. You must hear from God for yourself.

Now, what about signs? Some people say, “Every time I want to go somewhere, I hit my foot against a stone.” God can use unusual signs and obstacles to stop a person. Balaam was going on a journey God was not pleased with, and the angel of the Lord stood in the way.

The donkey turned aside, crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall, and finally fell down under him. Then the angel said, “I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me” (Numbers 22:32).

Balaam beat the donkey three times without realising that God was trying to stop him. Sometimes the obstacles on your path are God’s mercy.

Beloved, hitting your foot against a stone may be more than an accident. Sometimes God uses a warning sign to tell you that trouble is on the way, or that evil is lurking where you are going.

Many people have been destroyed because they failed to observe these obvious signs. When their spirit was troubled, they ignored it. When their foot kept hitting stones on the way, they said, “It is nothing.”

When strange delays kept happening, they pushed harder. Some people will tell you, “It is just an ordinary thing, it is not spiritual.” But not everything is superstition. The God who made the heavens and the earth can use anything in creation to speak to His children.

There was a time I was on my way to meet someone. Before I got to the place, I hit my foot against stones several times. It was unusual, and my spirit was unsettled.

When I finally arrived at the person’s place, I was told he was sick. We rushed him to the hospital, and there it was confirmed that he was dead. Beloved, when God is warning us, we must be careful. Those stones were not ordinary. Heaven was speaking.

So when you notice such signs, what should you do? Do not ignore them, and do not panic. Pause and pray. Ask the Holy Spirit, “Lord, what are You saying?” Plead the blood of Jesus over your journey, your life, and the people you are going to meet.

Check your spirit: has your peace gone? Is there an unusual heaviness? If the caution remains, wait, delay, or change your plan as the Lord leads. “Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7).

God reveals so that we can spiritually respond on time. At the same time, let the sign lead you to God, not to fear. The enemy also likes to use fear to keep people from their helpers and their blessings.

That is why every sign must drive you to your knees, not to anxiety. When you pray, God will either confirm the warning in your spirit or give you peace to proceed. The sign gets your attention; prayer gives you understanding.

Beloved, many tragedies could have been avoided if people had paid attention to it earlier. Learn to be spiritually sensitive.

When your spirit is uneasy, when strange obstacles keep coming, when your foot keeps hitting against stones in an unusual way, do not laugh it off. Stop and pray. It may be the mercy of God saving you from what you cannot see.

The problem starts when we fail to recognise when God is talking. Some people mistake the voice of God for the voice of Satan. They rebuke a genuine warning from God simply because it is against their fleshly desire.

God says, “Don’t marry him,” and they say, “I reject it in Jesus’ name.” God says, “Don’t enter that business,” and they say, “The devil is a liar.” Beloved, be careful that you are not binding the very voice that is trying to save you.

Others make the opposite mistake. They obey every fearful thought as if it were God, and they miss every door He opens. That is why you must test every voice. “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God” (1 John 4:1).

How do you know the difference? The voice of God will never contradict His Word. The voice of God brings a settled caution, a quiet withdrawal of peace, not panic and torment. “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts” (Colossians 3:15).

The voice of the enemy usually works through fear, confusion, and pressure, and it often tries to keep you away from prayer, from the house of God, from godly people, and from your assignment.

The voice of your flesh usually agrees with whatever you already want or whatever you are already afraid of. When in doubt, pause, pray, check the Word, and seek counsel from mature believers who have no personal interest in your decision.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5). Sometimes the greatest protection God gives you is a simple warning: “Don’t go there.”

Many troubles could have been avoided if people had listened to the warning signs. Someone knew a business transaction looked suspicious but continued because of the promised profit.

Another person knew a relationship was unhealthy but ignored the signs because of emotions and attachments. Someone followed friends to a place they should never have visited and later found themselves in serious trouble.

“A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished” (Proverbs 22:3). “The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going” (Proverbs 14:15).

Sometimes the Holy Spirit will place an unusual caution in your heart. You may lose your peace about a journey, a relationship, or an agreement. You cannot explain it, but something inside you is not settled.

At such moments, pause and pray. Do not allow pressure, excitement, money, or people’s opinions to silence a genuine warning. Do not let someone rush you by saying, “If you don’t there today, you will miss it.”

God does not rush His children into danger. “He that believeth shall not make haste” (Isaiah 28:16). When Abraham went down to Egypt during the famine, he got himself into trouble and nearly lost his wife.

But the Bible says, “And Abram went up out of Egypt… unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning… Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD” (Genesis 13:1–4).

Beloved, if you have gone where you should not have gone, go back to the altar. Go back to the place where you first met God, the place of prayer, the place of the Word, the place of humility. That is where restoration begins.

Naomi went to Moab full and came back empty. But when she returned to Bethlehem, the Bible says she came “in the beginning of barley harvest” (Ruth 1:22).

She came back at the time of harvest, and through Ruth and Boaz, God turned her emptiness into fullness and placed her family in the royal line of David.

Your return to God may be the beginning of your harvest. “Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings” (Jeremiah 3:22). “In returning and rest shall ye be saved” (Isaiah 30:15).

Now, if you keep hearing “Don’t go there” again and again, please pay very careful attention and pray very well. When a warning keeps repeating itself, it is not something to brush aside. The Bible says, “For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not” (Job 33:14).

When Pharaoh had the same dream twice, Joseph explained, “And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass” (Genesis 41:32). Repetition can be a sign of urgency and certainty.

When God called the young boy Samuel, He called him once, twice, three times, and Samuel kept running to Eli because he did not yet know the voice of the Lord. It was only on the fourth time that Samuel said, “Speak; for thy servant heareth” (1 Samuel 3:10).

God is patient. He will call again and again. But do not wait until the fourth time when you can respond at the first. The Bible also shows us the sad end of those who kept ignoring repeated warnings.

God said of Israel, “I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not” (Jeremiah 7:13).

“And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people… But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy” (2 Chronicles 36:15–16).

Every warning God sends is an act of compassion. But there comes a time when the warnings stop. “He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy” (Proverbs 29:1). Do not wait until there is no remedy.

And if you discover that you have already gone where God said not to go, do not despair. Turn back quickly, repent, and ask God for mercy. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand” (Psalm 37:23–24).

God is able to bring you out and redirect you. Look at Jonah. He ran from God, went down to Joppa, boarded a ship to Tarshish, and ended up in the belly of a fish. If anyone had gone too far, it was Jonah.

But from the belly of that fish, he prayed, “I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple” (Jonah 2:4). God heard him, the fish vomited him on dry land, and the Bible says, “And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time” (Jonah 3:1).

Beloved, your disobedience did not cancel God’s purpose for your life. If you will look again toward Him, He will speak to you a second time.

Look at Samson. He went to Timnath, to Gaza, and to the valley of Sorek. He lost his strength, his eyes, and his freedom. But in the prison house, the Bible quietly records, “Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven” (Judges 16:22).

Even in the place of shame, God was preparing a comeback. Samson called upon the Lord and said, “O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once” (Judges 16:28). And God answered him.

If you are in a prison house because of where you went, your hair can grow again. Look at Lot. He pitched his tent toward Sodom and ended up sitting in its gate. When judgement was about to fall, he lingered.

But the Bible says, “And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth” (Genesis 19:16). Even when Lot was slow to leave, God’s mercy took him by the hand and pulled him out. Ask God for that kind of mercy today.

Look at King Manasseh. He was one of the most wicked kings Judah ever had. He built altars to Baal, practised witchcraft, used enchantments, dealt with familiar spirits, and even caused his children to pass through the fire.He went everywhere God said not to go. Eventually he was carried away in chains to Babylon.

But the Bible says, “And when he was in affliction, he besought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers, And prayed unto him: and he was intreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God” (2 Chronicles 33:12–13).

If God could bring Manasseh back, He can bring you back. But hear me well. The moment you realise you are on the wrong road, the first thing to do is to stop going further.

Many people discover that they have made a mistake, but instead of turning back, they push harder, hoping to prove that they were right. When Israel refused to enter the promised land and God told them they would wander in the wilderness, they suddenly said, “We will go up now.”

Moses warned them, “Go not up, for the LORD is not among you” (Numbers 14:42), but they went anyway and were defeated. Beloved, do not add disobedience to disobedience. Do not try to fix a wrong decision with another wrong decision. Stop, turn around, and go back to God.

So what should you do when you keep hearing “Don’t go there”? First, stop and do not rush. If the decision can wait, let it wait. Do not move forward simply because others are pushing you or because you are afraid of missing out. A delay that comes from obedience is better than a disaster that comes from haste.

Second, pray very well. Do not just say a quick prayer and move on. Set time apart to seek the face of God. If necessary, add fasting. Ask God plainly, “Lord, is this You? What are You saying? What am I not seeing?” “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not” (Jeremiah 33:3).

Third, check the warning with the Word of God. If what you are about to do is clearly against Scripture, then you do not need to pray long; the answer is already no. If it is not against Scripture, ask God to show you whether the timing, the person, or the place is wrong.

Fourth, examine your own heart honestly. Is this warning coming from fear, from past hurt, or from a spirit of laziness? Or is there a genuine, settled caution in your spirit that will not go away even when you are calm? A warning from God usually remains steady when you are quiet before Him, while fear tends to rise and fall with your emotions.

Fifth, ask God for clear confirmation. Gideon asked God for a sign with the fleece, once and then again, and God graciously confirmed His word to him (Judges 6:36–40). God is not offended when a sincere heart asks for clarity. But do not keep asking for signs when God has already spoken clearly, as Balaam did, hoping God will change His mind.

Sixth, seek counsel from mature, godly people who have no personal interest in your decision. “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14).

Tell them everything, including the warning you have been sensing. Sometimes God will use them to confirm what He has been saying to you.

Seventh, watch your peace. “For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace” (Isaiah 55:12). If every time you think about that journey, that marriage, that business, or that visit your peace disappears, do not ignore it. Peace is one of the ways the Holy Spirit leads His children.

Eighth, be willing to obey whichever way God leads. Sometimes we pray for direction, but deep inside we have already decided. Tell the Lord, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” When your heart is truly surrendered, it becomes much easier to hear Him clearly.

And finally, when the direction becomes clear, obey promptly. When the angel warned Joseph in a dream to flee into Egypt with the child Jesus, the Bible says, “When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt” (Matthew 2:14).

He did not wait until morning. He did not hold a family meeting. He arose that same night. Prompt obedience saved the life of the Saviour of the world. Your prompt obedience may save your life, your marriage, your money, or your destiny.

But remember the balance. If after prayer, the Word, and godly counsel you discover that the “don’t go there” was actually the enemy trying to keep you from God’s assignment, then do what Nehemiah did.

Refuse to be intimidated. Say with boldness, “Should such a man as I flee?” Pray through the fear and go where God is sending you, knowing that “If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31).

Beloved, God loves you too much to let you walk blindly into destruction. If you are hearing “Don’t go there,” He may be trying to save you. If you have already gone, He is calling you back to the altar.

And if the enemy is the one whispering, the Holy Spirit will give you discernment and courage to press forward. In every case, the answer is to seek God, listen carefully, and obey quickly.

Let us pray. Father, in the name of Jesus, I confess that I went where You told me not to go. I acknowledge my sin, and I ask for Your mercy. I refuse the lie of the devil that I have gone too far. As Jonah looked again toward Your holy temple, I look again to You.

As You took Lot by the hand while he lingered, take me by the hand and bring me out. As You restored Manasseh, restore me. Give me the grace to stop going further on the wrong road, to cut every tie that keeps me bound, and to make things right where I have hurt others.

Send the right people to help me. Let my hair grow again in the place of my shame, and give me strength once more. Remake me, Lord, like the potter remakes the clay, and restore the years that the locust has eaten. Order my steps from today, and let me never return to that place again, in the mighty name of Jesus.Amen. Remain blessed in Jesus’ name.

WISDOM FOR TODAY

You cannot pray against a trap while walking into it every day. The safest way to avoid a fall is to stay away from the edge.

PERSONAL CHALLENGE

Today, write down three places, people, or practices that God has been telling you to stay away from. Beside each one, write one practical action you will take to cut it off completely, whether it is deleting a contact, changing a route, leaving a group, removing an object, or ending a relationship. Then write down one godly place or activity you will go to instead this week, such as a prayer meeting, a Bible study, or fellowship with mature believers.

EVANGELISM CHALLENGE

Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to someone who is heading in the wrong direction, perhaps a young person getting involved with bad company, a friend drifting into a secret relationship, or someone seeking help from strange places. With love and gentleness, share the story of Lot or Jonah, warn them of where the road leads, and point them to Jesus, the only safe place to run.

AFRICAN PROVERB

“He who brings home firewood full of ants should not complain when lizards come visiting.”

Meaning: If a man carries ant infested wood into his house, he should not be surprised when lizards follow the ants inside. In the same way, the person who keeps going to wrong places, keeping wrong company, and bringing wrong things into his life should not be surprised when trouble follows him home. The wise person avoids the source of trouble rather than complaining about its consequences.

CLOSING REFLECTION

Beloved, not every open door is from God, and not every road that looks smooth leads to a good destination. God loves you too much to let you walk blindly into danger, so He speaks: “Don’t go there.” Listen to Him. Do not go down to Egypt for help, do not pitch your tent toward Sodom, and do not sit by the enemy’s fire. Stay where God has planted you, go where God sends you, and run to Him when you are in need. In the land of obedience, there is protection, provision, and a hundredfold harvest. Remain blessed in Jesus’ name.
